Abstract: Public school teachers throughout the United States are seeing their classrooms filled with
linguistically diverse students. According to the literature, this shift in linguistic diversification has served as a
motivator to conduct research of the multilingual classroom. However, the experiences of secondary teachers'
challenges regarding the education of ELLs has received little research attention. The increase in linguistic
diversity impacts the educational scene of the nation's secondary schools. Thus, a study on secondary
teachers' experiences with ELLs is warranted.
Despite the myriad of professional development activities designed to help mainstream teachers educate
English language learners (ELLs) teachers continue to face challenges associated with helping these students
realize academic achievement. The expected increase in 15 million ELLs (predicted to double by the year 2015)
in the k-12 public education system will require an adjustment in the methods used among educators and
policymakers to best educate the students.
This study will both identify and explore the challenges that junior high school teachers encounter in the
education process of ELLs. The researcher will set out to ask teachers about their greatest challenges with
regard to educating ELLs and analyze how these challenges vary among the junior high school teachers. A
mixed-method approach to the study will be used in determining the findings of the study. The study participants
will complete a fifteen item Likert scale survey adapted from the Preparedness to Teach ELLs Survey
formulated by Lucas, Villegas and Reznitskaya. Following the completion of the survey a sample of the teachers
will participate in structured focus interviews stratified by the teaching departments of the school. These
interviews will feature open ended questions related to the challenges of teaching ELLs. The findings will help
school administrators and educational policy makers in prescribing the type of professional development that
will assist the teaching population and ultimately aid in the academic achievement of the ELLs.
