She bought her frst sw in 1990 and, within the firs six months, was cutting and ereating her own designs. A winner of many design awards, Judy now sells her puzzles at art and craft shows around the country. Together with her husband, Dave, she has written numerous articles for Serll Saw Woodworking o> Crufts, and she teaches sroll sawing at the Woodcraft store in her hometown of Madison, Wisconsin. In er spate time, Judy reads, keeps track of politics on TV, gardens, cooks, turns bowls on her lathe, and puts together other people's flat puzzles. As faras cheir books and magazine articles go, Judy docs all the designing, scrollwork, sanding, and finishing. She also writes all the technical portions. Dave organizes the ‘material, provides a first-draft version for Judy's review, takes the in-process photos, does all of the typing, and interfaces with their editor. Allin all, the distribution of duties capitalizes on both ther strengths and provides an amicable distribution of labor. Jody and Dave co-authored an article in the Summer 2005 issue of Scroll Saw Workshop ‘magazine, tied "How to Select the Shows and Design your Booth for Maximum Sales.” ‘This book is the result of their fourth collaboration. Examine both sides of the board carefully, ooking for bad spots, including checks, knotholes, and obvious internal cracks, Mack these flaws on the wp of your board. I've had good lack with the General Finishes brand. The color of most woods will change over time because of ‘exposure to ultaviole rays. Fyou wane the color to hold, use a clear, UV-blocking Danish oil on the wood. The tech person I spoke to at General Finishes said their product doubles the life ‘of the color. General Finishes sels this product under the name “Outdoor Oil.” Personally, since I last recommended this product in Animal Puacles for the Scroll Saun, Ve stopped using it. The pieces needed more rubbing than I have time for (oF my customers want t pay for) Because making and selling puzzles is my busines, I do a lot of ciling. The more cut line detail there is na puzzle piece, the more attention it nceds at this step. ‘This is because more oil gets into the cut line than can be absorbed by the surfaces internal to any given eut. Then it bleeds out, usually ‘over several hours. After drying the pieces that need it, reassemble the puzzle and lec it air-dry overnight. Remember; ol fumes are extremely volatile. I dry the pieces with paper towels, because they dry quickly and completely. I dispose of the paper towels by dropping them loosely into a large paper bag and leting them dry overnight. Doing so prevents a buildup of fumes that could spontancously ‘combust. The important thing is not to seuit oil-soaked rags into an airtight container. Boos + Silver wire (14 and/or 18 gauge) crystal jewels, or stainless eee en aes + Sanding method of choice Se ey Seed + Needle-nose plies or tweezers Wiring You can abo inser silver wite into your puzzles. I'your wite is 100 long, it will bend over—silver wires ae too soft o pound like a mal. If you've accidentally drilled the hole for the wire too lange, laten the top of the wire to cover the gap by hammering ie abit more. Jewelling AA third sparkly choice is showing the stars with small crystal jewels available at craft stores. Mount a teardrop-shaped bitin your dill press or rotary power tool. Drill the gem holes co the depth of the gems you have. (This will vary considerably depending on the effect you wane.) If using a rotary ool, you can drill by hand or with a small brace, I's easier o judge depth and diameter with the brace, but | found it took too long. Using a drill press eliminates this problem. ‘Use clear glue such as gap-filling cyanoacrylate. Puta tiny drop of glue in the hole with a toothpick and carefully place the gem. Needle-nose pliers or tweezers make this easier. Clean off any excess elue and admire your work. Jewelling is best done after your piece has been oiled and dried, When you drill the gem hole, you will go down to bare wood, so the glue will stick better. (eyercon) Step-by-step Finishing nails Youive already dried shallow holes to show the placement ofthe stars. The next step is to mount a smal stainless ste! finishing nail In your dei press. Be sure to use stainless steel rails, or the moisture ‘content of the wood and the solvents in the Danish ol fiish may ‘ause rust or discoloration. Holding the puzzle piece firmly, turn on the dril press and push the mall most of the way into the wood. Characteristics are thought to be associated with those people born during any given period of time. The Chinese, or Eastern, zodiac takes a different approach; characteristics are asigned to people depending roughly on the year in which they were born, These animals do ‘not have constellations. ‘There are seyeral versions of the origin ofthe ‘Chinese zodiac cycle. One involves a race of all the animals to the bedside of the Buddha—cach of the ewelve that arrived frst had a year named afier him. Another version involves a contest staged by the Jade Emperor for the most beautiful, cleverest, ete. Each of the winners had a year named after him. ‘The basic rwelve-year cycle is also part of a larger 60-year eycle, The 60-year eyele is based on the twelve animals plus a rotation ofthe five elements: water, wood, fire, meta, and earth. “This reals in combinations with even more specific personality characteristics, such as a wood ox oF a water dragon. In addition, the two primal forces, yn (odd yeas) and yang (ven years), influence the postive and negative sles ofthe various combinations of animal and -lemental signs. And you thought the Western zodiac was complicated! To find out what sign under which you were born, consult the chart on page 94. Because che Eastern rodiae rotates according to the lunar eyele—nor the sola, like Western years—the Chinese New Year is not synchronized with January 1. Ifyou were born lace in January or early in February, your sign is probably associated with the prio year: Each puzae includes more than just a pattern and photo of the completed project.
