LIVING IN LITHUANIA
Lithuania is located in the Northern Europe, in the geographical heart of Europe. Lithuania is the largest and most
populous of the three Baltic States. The country possesses a rich cultural and historical heritage. At the moment,
Lithuania is not an expensive country to live in. The cost of living is very much dependent on individual habits and

Klaipeda is the third biggest city in Lithuania located on the coalescence of the Curonian Lagoon and The Baltic Sea.
The story of the city began in 1252 when the Memelburg castle was built by the Livonian Order in the area of Klaipeda.

making life decisions.

WHO IS HERE TO HELP?

Residence Life staff members are available to help you at all times during SLI.

 The Resident Assistants (RAs) are university students who work with the RDs to make the residence halls
exciting places to live! Resident Assistants (RAs) live on the floors with students and serve as a resource to
residents: organize events on floors, enforce community standards, and work to maintain University values, a
positive atmosphere and learning community.

 The Resident Directors (RDs) are professional staff members who live in the residence halls and who are
responsible for making them a place where students feel safe and welcome. They are concerned about the
wellbeing of students and enjoy spending time with them. They are also concerned with the atmosphere in
the residence hall and will hold students accountable if they break rules or damage the facilities.

 The Director of Community Life (DCL) oversees the Resident Directors and make sure SLI is a fun and safe
place for students!

 Receptionists and Night Guards operate the front desk and monitor access to the halls, if you have any

YOUR ROOMMATES
LIVING TOGETHER
Making the most of living in your new residence hall community starts with getting settled in and getting to know
your roommates. Begin by discussing with your roommate your ideas, feelings, backgrounds, and opinions on sharing
responsibilities in the room. Be clear about what you want and work on compromising. Establishing healthy
roommate relationships is the first step in becoming part of the larger on-campus community. Make sure to reflect
your expectations about living together while signing your roommate agreement, which can serve as a reminder but
also keep accountability on respecting each other’s privacy and freedoms.

experienced conflict, but rather how you and your roommates respond to it.

HOME SICKNESS
If you feel lonely and homesick, there are ways that help you deal with this feeling:
 Call your parents! Staying in touch can help.
 Do something fun, like playing with friends.
 Go to talk to your RA; this conversation will help you feel better.
 Look at the bright side, such as activities and friends in the new setting.
 Think that the time away is short.

CULTURE SHOCK
If you come from outside of Lithuania, you may experience culture shock. It's a confusing and nervous feeling a person
may have after leaving a familiar culture to live in a new and different culture. What can you do to overcome that
feeling?
 Talk to your RA about it; they can help you understand the local culture.
 Find some friends from your own country
 Try to learn more about the new culture; you might find that you have more similarities than at first was noted

SAFETY AND SECURITY

Your safety is our number one concern. Our department strives to work with our community in recognizing and
resolving crime and community issues.
Although Klaipeda is a safe place, common sense safety measures are advised:
 Always be aware of your surroundings, especially at night. If possible, avoid walking alone late at night. Walk
with friends and people you know.
 When walking, travel in well-lit and populated areas.
 Take a taxi when returning late from the city at night.
 Wear sneakers or shoes that allow for added mobility.
 Be watchful and aware. Keep your head up. Make quick eye contact with those around you and be observant
of passing vehicles. Don’t become distracted by talking on a cell phone or listening to an iPod/similar device.
 It is not a bad idea to keep a whistle within reach. If threatened, use the whistle to signal residents for help.
 Carry a cell phone and call ahead to your destination to alert them that you’re on the way. Make sure you’re
expected at a certain time, so in the event you fail to show up, those expecting you will know enough to begin
looking for you.
 Walk with confidence. Don’t let anyone violate your space.
 Trust your instincts. Anyone at any time can be a victim of a crime, so never assume, “IT WILL NEVER HAPPEN
TO ME.”
 If an unarmed attacker confronts you, believe in your ability to defend, distract, or even incapacitate the
attacker enough to escape.
 If you think that someone is following you, switch direction or cross the street. Walk towards an open store,
restaurant or residence
 Carry an emergency card on you (take it from DeFehr reception)
 Call 112 in an emergency
In the halls:
 Always lock your room even if you are in the residence hall.
 For your safety and that of other residents, do not prop open entrance doors.
 Note the nearest fire exit.
 Never let someone you do not know into a building.
 Know your neighbors, watch out for one another, and notify an RA if you see any suspicious people.

12
STORES & ATM LOCATIONS

GROCERY STORES
There are 3 major grocery stores near LCC.
 RIMI is a Scandinavian brand store where prices are bit higher but you can locate products there that you
won’t be able to get in any other store.
 MAXIMA is a Lithuanian store and claims to be the cheapest. You can really find good deals there every week.
In every store also pay attention if the special price is offered with a loyalty card. Maxima has an ATM.
 Next to MAXIMA store you can always find old ladies selling their local organic produce. Berries, herbs,
veggies.
 IKI at Studlendas is a large store in a small shopping mall. Studlendas has an ATM.

OTHER SHOPPING
The largest shopping mall, Akropolis (Taikos pr. 61) is located right in the center of the city and the Nr 14 bus will take
you there. You won’t miss the bus stop because a huge sign is visible from afar www.akropolis.lt. You can buy
everything from food to pots and pans. If you are looking to buy bedding and towels, you may visit JYSK (opposite to
Akropolis) in Arena supermarket (Baltijos pr. 64) since it has cheaper options.

EMERGENCIES
For medical emergencies, fires, and other emergency situations, students should call RD-on-Duty
phone +3706 4345 644. For immediate emergency, call 112.

FIRE SAFETY
 Evacuation plans are placed on each floor of all LCC buildings. Everyone must evacuate their
room/office and building immediately during the sounding of a fire alarm or upon the direction
of a University staff member.
 Leave all belongings behind. Inhibiting the process of evacuation will result in disciplinary action. Exit quickly and
orderly through the nearest stairway exit. Never open a door that feels hot to the touch.
 There are glass key boxes by every back door on the first floor of each building. In case of a fire, break the glass,
take the key out and open the back door.
 Attempting to re-enter a building area without permission from University officials is prohibited. Disciplinary action
will be taken for failing to comply with the evacuation policy.
 During the fire emergency, all residents must leave the Residence Halls and gather in Michealsen Centras. In
Michealsen Centras all residents must show up near their floor RAs and to sign up that they are present.

POWER OUTAGES
Things to remember during a power outage:
 Turn off all light switches. The voltage may fluctuate and damage any lights that are on.
 Set all equipment and appliance switches to the OFF position. This is to protect against kicking out the circuit
breakers, blowing fuses, or damaging equipment when the full surge or current hits as the power comes back
on.
 Increase ventilation by opening windows. If the failure lasts more than a few minutes, it will be necessary to
evacuate persons from darkened areas (restroom, stairwells, or other areas with no windows or natural
lighting).
 Report all persons trapped in elevators to RD on Duty.
 If it becomes necessary to evacuate the premises during a blackout, be sure to protect all valuables and make
sure that all equipment is safe when the power comes back on.

Contact the RA or RD-on-duty in case of a utility failure in residence halls, which can include water emergency, power
failure, damage in heating system;
