APPENDIX A Nikon Automatic Level AUTOMATIC LEVELS AX-1 & AX-1S Instruction Manual Nikon Automatic Levels AX-1 and AX-18 have been designed for use in such applications 2s til engineering and building construction (508001 = ee | ssanee | | NIKON conponATION | “=i SL EDGR Toot aor hacon ono ree Printed in Japan 37 Qioss.)H 308 10 1, NOMENCLATURE Objective Gireuar level event oa Penna sone Fig. 1. As this is @ precision instrument, it should always be transported and carried in its When carrying the insieument mounted on 2 tripod, be sure 19 Keep iL In a vertical at tisuse, Do not eatey it over the shoulder, 2, Smudges and fingerprints may be removed Guth 3 damp tissue or soft, clean, lint-free cotton cloth, 3, Though Nikon Automatic Levels AX! and xis have. been weather-sealed, always be sure 10 clean the instrume soft cloth after use in dusty or Til Conditions. 4, When packing the insteument in its carrying Case, align the three leveling screws of the ‘ase with the hollows provided. 5, Whenever possible, store the instrument in a dry, shady location 6 Do not use organic solvents (such 2s thinner, ier, alcohol, oF xyFene} To clean the plastic ‘carrying case. Wash only with a mild, neutral detergent. 7. While the plastic hinges of the carrying case may grow white with constant use, there Should be no concerns about the case break ing at these paints, Wainy Rotile adjustment oe 9 ULUSE 1. Preparation DSetup tripod legs so that the tripod head is approximately level. @Gently remove the instrument trom its case, and place it on the tripod head securing it from undemeath with the tripod's lack dawn screw. @Observing the air bubble in the circular level, adjust the leveling screws t0 move the bubble to the center of the light brown circle, (Using a spherical head tripod) Loosen the lock down screw and slide the leveling base plate of the instrument ‘around on the spherical head of the tripod while observing the air bubble inthe Circular level. When the air bubble is centered in the light brown circle, tightly felasten the lack down serew. @ Looking into the telescope, rotate the diopter adjustment ring to bring the cross hair image into sharp focus. @ Using the sight on the top of the telescope, take aim at the target (on the rod). Look: ing into the telescope, center the target image in the viewtield with the horizontal tangent knob. Turn the focusing knob to bring the image of the rod into sharp focus without parallax’ shift relative to the reticle, —Parallax— No parallax exists when, looking through the telescope eyepiece and moving the eye vertically or laterally, no relative move ment of the images of the reticle and the fod can be detected @ The line of sight is exactly horizontal if, when looking at the circular level, the ait bubble fies within the light brown circle Surveying work can then be started im ‘mediately after leveling To check to see whether the automatic level compensation device is operating correctly or not, lightly tap the tripod with the hand 10 see’that the image in the tele 2. Leveling Work To measure the height difference between surveying points A and 8, place the instru ment halfway between the points, and take readings for rods (I) and (ID), setup at points A and B, respectively. The difference of the feadings, thus obtained, will give the height difference therebetween. (Fig. 3) Example: Calculating the height difference between Points A and 8 Reading on Rod {{}: 197-7om “Reading on Rod (HI): 89 3em 108 dem a oa a I .589.2em hg (Tentative neignt)=25m —_ MBCRA*A2608 dem ie bae plane _| 1 Tees Fig 254 3. Stadia Measurement (by AX-1S) As the AX-IS is equipped with telescope Teticle with stadia lines, it provides a rapid means of determining the distance L from the instrument center to the target (on the rad}. Read out the length @ on the rod imaged between the two stadia lines, and multiply this read-out length by 100, Then add the additive constant of 10cm. (Fig, 4) Fad HII INSPECTION AND ADJUSTMENT The description in the previous chapters dealt with fundamental operations, assuming the in strument has been correctly’ adjusted. In this chapter the adjustment procedure will be covered, 1. Circular Level Perpendicularity () Inspection First, check the perpendicularity by settingup the instrument so that the ‘bubble in the circular level is 38 near as Possible 10 the center of the light brown circle. (Fig, 5-L0) @Rotate the telescope 180°. (Fig. 5 Grau) Leics level Fig. Sa Fig. 5 @It_ the bubble remains at the center, the instrument is correctly adjusted I any displacement is detected, the adjustment procedure is as follows 2. Line of Sight Horizontality (Onsite Inspection and Adjustment) (1) Inspection @Set up two rods (facing each other at Positions F and R} at a distance of 70, = 100m apart. Set-up the instrument on the ‘tripod hallway between them, and level following the standard procedure. @ Sight each of the rods through the tele Scope, and take readings F, and Ry on the sighted points of the rods. (Fig. 8) Fig.8 @ Transport and reset the instrument at distance of about 2m from one of the rods, and rake readings F and Ry ‘Fig. 9) 255 (2) Adjustment D Manipulating the leveling screws, move the bubble to half of its displacement trom the center. (Fig. 6) ave “& N = Displced ar bubble Move to the position shown by the dotted circle, inst of the displacement Fig 6 @®Move the bubble to the center of the level by manipulating the three circular level adjustment screws with the sup plied hexagonal key. (Fig. 7) —— ———— rT This completes the adjustment proce dure, Assure correct adjustment by repeating the above inspection procedure and see, ing that the bubble always lies at the center, whichever direction the tele- scope is turned, Fig @If the difference between Fy and Ay is equal to that of F; and Ay. that is, Fry =F:—Ry, ‘the instrament is in pertect adjustment, If it is not, refer to the following adjustment procedure: (2) Adjustment Calculate the result of the equation, F. Fa +(F, — Ay) Sight the resulting point on rod (Fi (Fig, 10) (F, Fy corresponds to the height dif ference between F and F.) Flemove the reticle adjustment screw cover Using the supplied hexagonal key, manipu late the reticle adjustment screw to center the reticle crosshairs on the image of Point FoFig, 11) After adjustment, refer again to the inspec: tion procedure and recheck for correct alignment, T a + Changing the Unit of Horizontal Angle Measurement To switch between degree (360°) and gon (4008) scales, remove the two. screws securing the horizontal circle, index plate and rotate the index plate 180”.
