PCT – SMART Goals

By March 2019, 100% of first grade teachers will be able to effectively implement the shared
reading process through rigorous training to increase the reading level of scholars by building
comprehension skills. This will be measured through the Fountas & Pinnell Benchmark
Assessment.

By the end of the school year, I will support K-2 ELA teachers, through modeling, coaching,
and purposeful planning, in the area of guided reading, with 100% of grade K-2 teachers
feeling confident in conducting guided reading lessons.
Shared-Close Reading

S
Shared/Close Reading Process

S Day 1: Scholars participate in a shared reading activity to get the gist

of the story.
S Day 2: Scholars participate in a close reading activity to make their
thinking visible through annotation.

S Day 3: Scholars participate in a close reading activity to cite text

evidence.
S Day 4: Scholars participate in a close reading to determine the
meaning of words and phrases in the story.

S Day 5: Scholars participate in a shared reading activity to summarize

the story.
Findings

Increased comprehension skills

Increased reading levels

Increased fluency
Results/Next Steps

According to the data, scholars who were on grade level increased by 42%.
As a next step, shared writing will be incorporated into the 5-day plan.
Guided Reading

S
Process

What is Guided Reading?

Guided reading is an instructional approach that involves a teacher

working with a small group of students who demonstrate similar
reading behaviors and can read similar levels of texts.

What was CS 55s process for implementing Guided Reading?

In order to achieve the SMART Goal, several Professional

Developments were conducted geared towards analyzing the F & P
data, grouping students, planning out purposeful lessons, and the
resources to use for guided reading. Demoed guided reading lessons
were provided for teachers who felt unsure of how to conduct guided
reading lessons and coaching support was given when necessary.
Findings

S On grades K-2, 4 classrooms consistently

executed guided reading lessons during the
designated Reading Workshop period.
S In those classrooms where guided reading
happened consistently, 80% of students
improved by at least 1 reading level.
Results/Next Steps

S As a result of only 50% participation of consistent

Guided Reading, additional Professional Development
will be provided for the teachers who are not
participating. Inter-visitations will be scheduled to
allow colleagues to experience the ability to pull guided
reading groups during the Reading Workshop period.
The PCT will create a cycle of support in order to
ensure that the teachers become comfortable
conducting Guided Reading daily.
