Question 1

(a) Magnetism plays an essential role in generators, motors, transformers, circuit breakers
and many other types of consumer appliances. Define electromagnetism.

(b) A small weight is connected to a 5 cm long wire which carries a 1.5 A current, as shown
in Figure 1. The weight has caused a clockwise moment of 4.8 x 10-4 Nm. Calculate
the magnetic flux density when the wire X is positioned.

Question 2
A ferromagnetic core is shown in Figure 1. The depth of the core is 5 cm. The other dimensions
of the core are as shown in the Figure 1. Assume the relative permeability of the core is 1000.

i) Calculate the value of the current that will produce a flux of 0.005 Wb.
ii) With the current calculated from (i), determine the flux density at the top of the core.
iii) Calculate the flux density at the right side of the core.
iv) Draw the magnetic circuit for Figure 2
