The differences presented in Dan’s video clip, which act as a barrier to mutual intelligibility,
could only be classified as mistakes. The pronunciation mistakes seems to be caused by the lack
of practice, cultural, and linguistics knowledge. Some people may argue that those differences
are deviations of the standard American English. However, this viewpoint is not necessarily true.
Since linguistics features from other varieties are considered as deviation only if they exist in the
educated people’s speech. In the case of Dan videos, even some Vietnamese English users, who
are expert in English, found the differences difficult to comprehend.

The knowledge of ELF does not change my viewpoint on language deviation. Both of these two
concepts, in my opinion, are based on the principle of majority but on different level: ELF
(international) – deviation (national, regional, or local). The emergence of ELF stems from the
fact that NNEs outnumbered NEs, which changes the ownership of the English language, thereby
leading to the equal co-existence of multiple varieties. The principle is the same for deviation. If
a linguistics feature that is different from the standard is used by the majority of the population in
a particular area, then it becomes deviation.
