M.S. Drum APPLICATION METHODOLOGY (@) () (e) (a) Cleaning : Proper surface preparation is essential to get best performance out of Coal Tar Tape. The surface is to be cleaned from oil, grease, dirt, rust and loose particles either by sand blasting / shot blasting, power tool cleaning solvent cleaning, In case, rusting occurs before the surface is primed due to time lag, the surface must again be cleaned by suitable means. Primer : One uniform coat of primer (Tuff Coat primer confirming to IS 10221 or 15337) to applied by brush or spray or any ‘other methods, ensure uniform coating. The primer shall be allowed to dry to the touch prior to tape application. If pplication is done in cold weather the pipe shall be preheated unti itis warm to the touch and traces of moisture are removed. Drums containing primer should be stirred well before application. Primer is applied by brush or by spray. Coverage by spray is more than that by brush. Coating & Wrapping : Remove the thermofusiable film on one side of tape, heat the tape surface uniformly by torching, Using gas bumer or any other gas heating system to get the adhesive characteristics of the tape surface ( avoid over heating which can damage the tape by melting and running down of the coating material). As soon as the primer is hard dry, tape should be applied on the pipe. Generally 2mm tape in two layers wrapping of 4 mm in single layer are applied Primer is applied on first coat of tape to give better bonding of second layer of tape on first coat. Apply tape spirally or any other conventional way maintaining a certain amount of tension the intimate contact with the pipe surface ensuring perfect addition to avoid formation of air pockets, bubbles boneath the tape. The overlap between the ends should be min. 12mm Persingle coator as per design/ specification requirement. The overlap to be fused property Double Layer : Application of the second layer of Tuff Tape is as per procedure outlined above except the thermofusiable tape on the both side of the tape to be removed. The application should meet the adhesion and holiday detection as per standards. HEALTH& SAFELY ‘The use of gloves, goggles and face mask is recommended when using both primer and tape . Dry powder, Co2 or fine water ‘spray can be used for firefighting. HANDLING & STORAGE PRECAUTIONS (a) (b) (©) (3) (e) cu) (g) ‘Tape in roll form should be stored in the shed in single layer stack. Fora long lasting and best performance the coal tar tape and required primer should be from the same manufacturer. Never apply the tape when the temp. of the primed pipe is below 10°C and shows traces of dew. Protect primed pipes from dust, dirt, oll and moisture. Protect pipes coated withTuff tape from direct sunlight by storing them after lime wash or any other protective systems, ‘Stack coated pipes on straw orsandbagson the groundsurface. — Ifthere is formation of air pocket beneath the layer of te tape after application, identify the place of air pockets and cut open the tape with the sharp knife remove air by pressing with hands or any other means. Fuse the cut portions by heating and by pressing to achieve the addition with substrate. TECHNICAL SERVICES .
