Name: Samantha Morgan Date of Lesson: 2

Subject: Math

Topic: Measurement

Grade Level: 1st Grade

Time Frame: 25-30 minutes / 10:00 – 10:30

Common Core Standards: CCSS.MATH.CONTENT.1.MD.A.2--Express the

length of an object as a whole number of length units, by laying multiple copies of a
shorter object (the length unit) end to end; understand that the length measurement of
an object is the number of same-size length units that span it with no gaps or overlaps.
Limit to contexts where the object being measured is spanned by a whole number of
length units with no gaps or overlaps.

Objective: Students will estimate or measure how deep the snow is by using random
household objects or a virtual ruler (inches).

Assessment: Students will answer and participate in measuring the parts of a

snowman in class (formative). Students will be completing their worksheet for
homework involving measuring objects in their homes (summative).

Procedure:

Anticipatory Set: (hook: this should be 1-5 minutes. Some examples would be reading a
story, having students guess what is in your mystery box, completing a science
experiment and asking them why they think it bubbled over)

The teacher will have prepared a list of “Would You Rather Questions” relating to snow.
The teacher will ask the students which question they would prefer. The teacher would
say the last Would You Rather Question, and it would be “Would you rather do math or
would you rather build a snowman?” (Cue Do You Want To Build A Snowman from the
movie Frozen). (5 minutes)

Instructional Modeling: (you do the teaching: this should be the second biggest time
portion of your lesson. Here is where you do the teaching. Don’t want to spoon feed
students. Ask them questions like why? How? What do you think?)
The teacher will tell the students that they talked you into building a snowman instead of
just doing math. Little did they know that we are going to be measuring all the parts of
the snowman as we start to build it. The teacher will shape three snowballs (three
different sizes) and will hold them up so the students can see them. The teacher will go
over again how to use a ruler. The teacher will demonstrate measuring the snow balls and
telling the students the different sizes. The teacher will actually build the snowman using
the three balls of snow. (7 minutes)

Student Engagement/Practice: (students are engaged: This is the biggest time portion
of your lesson. Here is where students are in centers, completing science labs, working
individually or in groups. You as the teacher are now walking around the room as a
facilitator guiding them)

The teacher will have the three balls built and stacked up. The teacher will ask the class
about what the name of their snowman or snowwomen should be. The teacher will have
the students add up the measurements of all three balls. The students will add the small,
medium, and large ball and determine how tall the snowman is. The teacher will then talk
to the students about what accessories we are going to put on our snowman. The teacher
will have accessories for the eyes, nose, mouth, buttons, hat, arms, and scarf. The teacher
will hold up the ruler to each accessory. The teacher will have the students estimate how
many inches each object is. The teacher will have the students homework pulled up and
quickly go over it. (10 minutes)

Closure: (closing the lesson: this should be 1-5 minutes. This is a re-cap of your
objective. Some examples would be reading a story and identifying the nouns, asking
them what is the difference between a gas, solid and liquid, etc …)

The teacher will take a picture of their snowman and post it into their google classroom.
The teacher will end the lesson by telling the students some snow jokes or they can
choose to do a GoNoodle (Yes! I Want to Build a Snowman song (3:13min).
