Name: Samantha Morgan Date of Lesson: 3/17/21

Subject: Math

Topic: Adding operations of base ten

Grade Level: 1st Grade

Time Frame: 25 minutes / 10:00 – 10:25

Common Core Standards: CCSS.MATH.CONTENT.1.NBT.B.2--Understand that

the two digits of a two-digit number represent amounts of tens and ones.

Objective: Students will be able to solve math equations using base 10’s and 1’s.

Assessment: Students will answer and participate in adding and/or subtracting the
math problems that the teacher gives them. Students will be completing their
worksheet for homework by solving more practice math problems. They will answer
the question and color in the math problem with the designated color. (summative).

Procedure:

Anticipatory Set: (hook: this should be 1-5 minutes. Some examples would be reading a
story, having students guess what is in your mystery box, completing a science
experiment and asking them why they think it bubbled over)

The teacher will talk to the class about what holiday we are celebrating today. Today is
St. Patrick's Day!! The teacher will talk about some interesting facts about St. Patricks
day including the Chicago River turning green. The teacher will also be wearing cool St.
Patrick's day glasses and a headband during the lesson. (3 minutes)

Instructional Modeling: (you do the teaching: this should be the second biggest time
portion of your lesson. Here is where you do the teaching. Don’t want to spoon feed
students. Ask them questions like why? How? What do you think?)

The students are still in this unit of math. They seemed to be getting the hang of this. The
teacher will tell the students that they are still working on adding and subtracting their
tens and ones. The teacher will go over a couple of problems for a little review and
practice. The teacher will ask the students to grab a paper and pencil so they can be
actually writing out their math problems and solving them. (5 minutes)

Student Engagement/Practice: (students are engaged: This is the biggest time portion of
your lesson. Here is where students are in centers, completing science labs, working
individually or in groups. You as the teacher are now walking around the room as a
facilitator guiding them)

The students really have enjoyed doing math puzzles like cracking the code. The teacher
has a decoding mystery puzzle worksheet that everyone will work together on. The
teacher will give the students addition and subtraction problems. The teacher will give
each student a problem to work on. If the students get it wrong, then the teacher will go
over the problems on the board step by step. The teacher will present each section of the
puzzle as we do each chuck of words. (10-15 minutes)

Closure: (closing the lesson: this should be 1-5 minutes. This is a re-cap of your
objective. Some examples would be reading a story and identifying the nouns, asking
them what is the difference between a gas, solid and liquid, etc …)

The teacher will encourage the students to do math problems on a piece of paper and
show their work. The teacher will briefly go over their homework assignment that they
are doing that night. The homework will have the students decode the answer. Depending
on the answer, the students will color in the worksheet a specific color. We will quickly
go around and tell one joke that they would like relating for St. Patrick's day. (5 minutes)

Instructional Accommodations: (If you do not have ELL students in your room, you
may delete this section) I do not have any ELL students
