TYPES OF OCCUPATION LEVELS AND THEIR FUNCTION

This is a table showing the types of occupation levels and their functions.

TYPES OF OCCUPATION LEVELS FUNCTIONS

Top Management These managers are responsible for

controlling and overseeing the entire
organization or company. They develop
goals, strategic plans, company policies, and
make decisions on the direction of the
business to help their employees to work
more efficiently.

Senior Management Senior Managers are responsible for the

overall operations and profit making of a
company or institution. Their goal is to
maximize this organization's efficiency,
productivity, and performance, by making
sure all operations are running smoothly.

Middle Management The middle management provides guidance

to lower-level. Middle-management
functions generally revolve around enabling
teams of workers to perform effectively and
efficiently and reporting these performance
indicators to upper management.

Junior Management Junior managers may serve as account

executives on various projects, regardless of
industry. In marketing and advertising,
junior managers implement and oversee
projects. They also supervise the work of
nonmanagement employees, on the ongoing
projects that are their responsibility.

Semi-skilled and Discretionary Decision

Making Accountable for direct product, process or
service quality. Incremental improvement
of existing processes and procedures
according to clear guidelines. Choosing of
correct action on the basis of set standards,
training procedures and past experience.

Unskilled and Define Decision Making These person work are usually menial
defined and uncomplicated. Their task are
sometimes repetitive and they have short
work cycles.

5
TYPES OF ORGANIZATIONAL STRUCTURE

An organizational structure is a system that outlines how certain activities are directed in
order to achieve the goals of an organization. These activities can include rules, roles, and
responsibilities. The organizational structure also determines how information flows between
levels within the company. This table will discuss types of organizational structure.

TYPES OF ORGANIZATIONAL FUNCTIONS

STRUCTURES

Hierarchical Organizational Structure Hierarchical Organizational Structure are

ones that use a traditional hierarchical
structure and rely on a vertical chain of
command as the prime method of organizing
employees and their responsibilities.
Military, government, and other very large
organizations use a hierarchy to determine
the level of control employees have over
their work as well as their rank relative to
others. Hierarchical structures typically
feature multiple layers of management and
are therefore prone to bureaucracy and the
creation of silos that prevent cross-team
collaboration.

Matrix Organizational Structure A matrix structure provides for reporting

levels both horizontally as well as vertically.
Employees may be part of a functional
group for example a team of engineers but
may serve on a team that supports new
product development like a new album. This
kind of structure may have members of
different groups working together to develop
a new product line. But some people on the
team can have differing opinions and this
may be a disadvantage.

Functional Organizational Structure Functional organizational structures are the

most common. A structure of this type
groups individuals by specific functions
performed. Common departments such as
human resources, accounting and purchasing
are organized by separating each of these
areas and managing them independently of
the others.

6
Product Organizational Structure Product organisational structure is one in
which the framework in which a business is
organised in separated into divisions, each
focusing on a different product or service
and functioning as an individual unit within
the company. Each product group falls
within the reporting structure of an
executive and that person oversees
everything related to that particular product
line.

Customer Organizational Structure The customer-based structure is ideal for an

organization because it usually works to
meet the needs of the customer that has
products or services unique to specific
market segments, especially if that
organization has advanced knowledge of
those segments. An example of such a
structure would be a hospital.

Geographic Organizational Structure Geographical organisational structure suits

businesses that have offices or units in
different regions or geographical areas.For
organizations that cover a span of
geographic regions, it sometimes makes
sense to organize by region. This is done to
better support logistical demands and
differences in geographic customer needs.
They sometimes operate as a multinational
organization.

CONSTRUCTION COMPANY AND THEIR ORGANIZATIONAL STRUCTURE

The construction company we will be looking at is 4th GEN DESIGN AND

CONSTRUCTION. They are a general construction company that offers services from design
inception to architectural and construction schematics. The type of Organizational structure
that they use is a Functional one which group employees by their task or function.

8
MANUFACTURING COMPANY AND THEIR ORGANIZATIONAL STRUCTURE

The manufacturing company that we will be looking at is WISYNCO GROUP. Wisynco

Group Limited is a leading Jamaican distributor and manufacturer. They import top brands of
food, beverages, and paper products and produce their very own lines of high quality
products. The type of Organizational structure that Wisynco uses is Customer Organizational
Structure.

9
CODES AND STANDARDS

A code is a model, a set of rules that knowledgeable people recommend for others to follow.
It is not a law, but can be adopted into law. A standard is a more detailed elaboration than a
code. It may be defined as a level of quality, achievement that is considered acceptable or
desirable. Codes are the minimum requirements and attributes which are directly concerned
with influencing human life and civilization and the Standards are the technical ways toward
fulfilling them. Codes are supplements for law and Standards are approaches to meet Code.
Below are a set of international and local codes and standards.

NEC

National Electrical Code (NEC) is a set of regularly updated standards for the safe installation
of electric wiring in the United States. First published in 1897, the NEC is updated once
every three years. The NEC provides guidelines for electrical installation in order to prevent
fires and other electrical accidents. Electricians and contractors need to be aware of NEC
where applicable to ensure that installations are safe, legal and up to code. The codes are a
part of the National Fire Protection Association, a private trade association. One example of
this is based on the NATIONAL ELECTRICAL CODE 2020 soft bound edition includes the
most current requirements and emerging topics, such as renewable energy and energy
storage, to help protect and build a safer world.

IEEE

Stands for the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE) and is produced I triple
E. The IEEE is a professional association that develops, defines, and reviews electronics and
computer science standards. The IEEE provides a wide range of membership options for
individuals, groups, and corporations. IEEE knowledge groups, which are communities
driven by members and volunteers, help individuals grow in their knowledge about various
technological advancements. The codes and standards of IEEE govern how they work on
many technological devices. One example of this is the IEEE standard is IEEE 802.11 which
refers to the rules/guidelines that define communication for wireless LANs.

10
BSI

The British Standards Institution (BSI) is a service organization that produces standards
across a wide variety of industry sectors. Its codes of practice and specifications cover
management and technical subjects ranging from business continuity management to quality
requirements. The BSI Group currently has over 27,000 active standards. Products are
commonly specified as meeting a particular British Standard, and in general, this can be done
without any certification or independent testing. One example of this is British Standard 17
Interim Report on Electrical Machinery.

ANSI

American National Standards Institute (ANSI) is a U.S. based non-profit organization that
works to develop and promote standards in the United States and around the world. ANSI
was originally called the American Engineering Standards Committee (AESC), which was
formed in 1918. In short, ANSI takes on the responsibility for bringing together
representatives from government, industry, academia, and the public to develop voluntary,
consensus standards aimed at strengthening the technological industry. One example of ANSI
is code ANSI Z53 which focuses on Specifications for Accident Prevention Signs and Tags.

ASTM

American Society for Testing and Materials (ASTM) founded in 1898, is a scientific and
technical organization formed for the development of standards on characteristics and
performance of materials, products, systems, and services and the promotion of related
knowledge. They also develop and publish voluntary consensus technical standards for a
wide range of materials, products, systems, and services. One example of their standards is
Ideal standards are the standards which can be attained under the most favourable conditions
possible.

11
ASME

The American Society of Electrical Engineers (ASME) is a not-for-profit membership

organization that enables collaboration, knowledge sharing, career enrichment, and skills
development across all engineering disciplines, toward a goal of helping the global
engineering community develop solutions to benefit lives and livelihoods. ASME standards
are accepted for use in more than 100 countries around the world. ASME's standards
portfolio includes over 500 standards and associated products. One such standard states that
you or your company is committed to public safety and quality.

ISO

ISO (International Organization for Standardization) is an independent, non-governmental,

international organization that develops standards to ensure the quality, safety, and efficiency
of products, services, and systems. ISO standards are in place to ensure consistency. It was
set up in 1947 and is located in Geneva, Switzerland. ISO has published more than 21,584
standards and has members in 162 countries. One of their standards is ISO 9001 which is
defined as the international standard that specifies requirements for a quality management
system.

CUBIC

The Caribbean Uniform Building Code (CUBIC) was developed to provide appropriate
building standards for the Caribbean region. In the Eastern Caribbean, a model building code,
based on CUBIC, has been developed by the Organization of Eastern Caribbean States to
facilitate the introduction of national codes. In the legal system used in most of the OECS
States, the Building Code has been introduced into existing national legislation as a schedule
of the Building or Planning Regulations. They are available in over 12 countries including
Jamaica. One of their standards talks about wind and earthquakes disasters.

12
JS 21

The Jamaican standard JS21, is the source of regulations and is supported by the I.E.E.
regulations where necessary. When an electrical installation/infrastructure is up to the code or
code compliant, it means the installation is done and is being maintained according to the
regulations and standard set out by the JS21. This requirement is for safety and prevention of
fire and to protect life and property. One of their code is JS 93: 1984 which focuses on PVC-
insulated cables for electricity supply

SAFETY RULES

These are a list of safety rules to be followed on a worksite or in a workshop.

1. When in workshop always wear Personal Protective Equipment (PPE)

2. If inexperienced or underage refrain from operating an electrical machine
3. Do not play in workshop
4. Do not try to put anything in electrical sockets

13
TREATMENT PROCEDURES

Treatment procedures for different types of injuries in the workshop.

BURN

A burn is a damage to your skin tissue that is caused by heat, chemical or electricity. This is
how a first-degree burn should be treated:

1. Hold burned skin under cool (not cold) running water or immerse in cool water until
the pain subsides.
2. Cover burn with sterile, non-adhesive bandage or clean cloth.
3. Give over-the-counter pain relievers to ease pain.
4. See a doctor for further treatment if pain worsens.

14
ELECTRIC SHOCK

An electric shock occurs when a person comes into contact with an electrical energy source.
Electrical energy flows through a portion of the body causing a shock. It can be caused by
faulty appliances, Incorrect or deteriorated wiring or electrical equipment coming in contact
with water. It should be treated as such:

1. Turn off the source of electricity, if possible. If not, move the source away from you
and the person, using a dry, nonconducting object made of cardboard, plastic or wood.
2. Begin CPR if the person shows no signs of circulation, such as breathing, coughing or
movement. Pinch the person's nose and tilt their head back and ensure that you begin
the resuscitation.
3. Try to prevent the injured person from becoming chilled.
4. Apply a bandage. Cover any burned areas with a sterile gauze bandage, if available,
or a clean cloth. See a professional doctor for further treatment.

15
EYE INJURY

Eye injury refers to damage caused by a direct blow to the eye. The trauma may affect not
only the eye, but the surrounding area, including adjacent tissue and bone structure. Most
common eye injuries can be as result of chemical eye burn, direct trauma blow or Allergic
reaction. It can be treated as shown below:

1. Do not rub the eye. Allow running water to pass through eyes to wash out any
impurities or foreign bodies.
2. After washing eyes, blink to allow tears to clear any remaining impurities.
3. Do not apply ointment or medication to the eye.
4. See a doctor as soon as possible.

ACCIDENT REPORT

To: Mr Khaldun Rogers

From: Tyrese Smith
CC: Principal
Date: October 15, 2020
Re: Accident in Industrial department

On Monday October 15, 2020 at 12:35 pm in the industrial arts building, Jalon Thompson a
student of St. Georges College fractured his arm while completing an electrical project with
Dontay Ferguson. The root cause was because of the absence of a supervisor. Instead of
waiting on a teacher Jalon and Dontay took it upon themselves to begin working. They went
into the industrial arts storeroom and began taking out tools and pieces of board. After taking
out several items they began throwing the larts that they took out to each other. Dontay being
unaware that Jalon had stopped catching the larts threw one. Without enough time to react
Jalon rose his hand to protect himself and the lart hit him on his arm. He fell to the floor
holding his arm. Dontay and I ran to his aid as quickly as possible. We asked him what
happened, and he showed us his arm. We quickly called administration to which he was taken
to the hospital and the doctor reported a fractured arm.

MANAGEMENT AND ORGANIZATION

As stated, earlier Millennium Electrical is a pre revenue company that offers electrical
equipment and services. Our organization is made of the CEO, managers dept, Directors and
also our production. Our company’s Organizational Structure is a functional one which
enables our company to run smoothly and efficiently. These are 4 reasons why we chose such
a structure.

specialisation - departments focus on one area of work.

productivity - specialism means that staff are skilled in the tasks they do.

accountability there are clear lines of management.

clarity - employees understand their own and others' roles.
