Facility Spectrum

With so many different types of diseases that go around, the need for health care

specialties has increased throughout the years and there is a need for a full range of specialist to

provide the best possible care to be available for the public. There is such a wide spectrum of

different services that are available for different health care problems in the United States with

qualified physicians to take care of patients. In this paper I will be identifying the different types

of health facilities, their purpose and goals, how they work together, their differences,

similarities, and who is responsible for the oversight of each facility.

Hospitals

A hospital is a health facility that has many roles that deal with the delivery of medical,

nursing, and health related services for patients. Hospitals are open 24 hours days, 7 days a week

complete with fully staffed nurses, physicians, technicians, administrators and more to help

people around the clock with emergency care, testing, lab work, educational classes, x-rays and

patient procedures that can be an outpatient service which allows you to leave afterwards.

Ambulatory Surgical Centers

Ambulatory Health Care Service is a service that is usually done the same that is

performed on an outpatient basis so there is no impatient service. Ambulatory service is usually

done in a safe environment with monitoring and also including diagnosis, observation, treatment,

and rehabilitation services. Medpac (2018), suggest that, “Ambulatory care is provided in

settings such as dialysis clinics, ambulatory surgical centers, hospital outpatient departments, and

the offices of physicians and other health professionals. The Commission analyzes trends in care
3

and spending in ambulatory care settings and makes recommendations to the Congress and the

Medicare program.

Urgent Care Centers

An urgent care facility is also usually a 24-hour clinic that offers outpatient services; they

are considered walk-in clinics. They are designed for after hour basic health when a person can

not get to the regular physician or and immediate appointment is not available. Urgent care

centers provide easy access to quality medical care provided for illnesses or injuries that require

quick attention but definitely not as serious as having to need the care of an emergency room; no

life-threatening emergencies but they do provide the same the very same care as a doctor’s office

or an emergency room with personalized attention to the patients.

Rehabilitation Centers

Rehabilitation centers consist of different therapies to help a person restore their body to

function properly due to an illness, injury, or accident. Physical medicine and rehabilitation

includes various therapies to help a person restore function after illness or injury. These therapies

can include

 Physical therapy

 Occupational therapy

 Speech therapy (Danesh, 2012)

After a hospital stay, you may need short-term rehabilitation or extended recovery time after an

illness or injury. The industry is largely made up by independent hospitals that operate these

facilities within acute care hospitals. Some state funded, and private centers are also inpatient
4

rehabilitation centers that offer this service in a hospital type setting if needed, but some

rehabilitation facilities are already located within the hospitals.

Nursing Homes

Nursing homes are for people that require regular daily that cannot be provided at home,

but they do not need to be in a hospitalized setting. Nurses, doctors and therapist are there daily

to provide the necessary care of each patient such as; medications and therapies and also basic

care; bathing, dressing, and eating. Top Master's in Healthcare Administration (2018) stated

“Often associated with seniors who require custodial care in a residential facility, it can actually

serve patients of all ages who require this level of care. Nursing homes have medical personal

onsite 24 hours a day.

Quality is important. Some facilities do a better job than others. One way to learn about

the quality of a facility is to look at reports developed by federal, state, and consumer groups.

The goals of all health care facilities are to provide the same quality care across the United

States. Although there is distinct differences and similarities between health care facilities, their

overall main goal for all health facilities should be to provide the best quality care for every

patient needing medical help.
