DVD This week's new releases
By Ken Fox & Maitland McDonagh
. + (1990; Rated R; $19.98) Is David Lynch's luridly
loony tour de force as vividly "wild at heart and weird on top" as
it seemed nearly 15 years ago? And how! In the grotesque, lurid,
hotter than Georgia asphalt tale of young lovers on the run,
Elvis-fixated Sailor Ripley (Nicolas Cage) and his beloved
Peanut"-gum-popping sexpot Lula Pace Fortune (Laura
Dern)-flee her mother (Dern's real mom, Diane Ladd) and cross
paths with killers, crackpots and world-class creeps: Willem
Dafoe's repellent Bobby Peruis a walking nightmare.
Sly touches of “The Wizard of Oz" add a fractured fairy-tale
| air. There's no second-channel commentary on this digitally
remastered special edition, but most of the cast and crew show
up for the featurettes. Among the choice tidbits they let slip:
Sailor's distinctive snakeskin jacket, the symbol of his
“individuality and belief in personal freedom,” came from Cage's
txcelent OWN closet, bought years earlier because it
aeeet reminded him of Marion Brando's in “The B
Poor Fugitive Kind." Movie: 4x Extras: + wild at heart and weird on top”
