Week 3

What kind of organization would you like to work for? What would be the best? What would be the most
realistic?

I would like to work for Walmart. The best would be to work in a top management position in
Walmart and the most realistic will be that I will need a lot of experience, qualities and a better
qualification to get a better position job in Walmart. Talking about their structure they follow a
matrix organization structure at the store level and a divisional level structure at the top level.
Each store has same job categories, job descriptions and management hierarchy. The lowest
position in the store is of cashier/stocker/sales associate. Then in line are the hourly department
manager and customer service manager. An employee is promoted to assistant management
position as soon as he completes his management trainee program which is of 4 to 5 months.
Assistant management is the first salaried management position. After assistant manager comes
the co-manager but he/she is only present in large stores. Highest position in a store is of general
manager. Store manager or general manager has the power to make decisions in the store about
any personnel. Walmart has always been in the news for its discrimination with employees. It
has been noticed that female workers are paid less compared to male workers that are working at
the same position as they are. They don’t have any way of recruitment and employees who are
working for years are promoted to upper level. They have already faced a lot of lawsuits
regarding their workforce. There have been allegations against them that they pay low wages and
have poor working conditions. Talking about their policies towards community we can see that
because of the issues that have arise in past year they have come up with this slogan that it is our
responsibility to make a positive impact in the communities we serve.  In 2011 they contributed
$958.9 million in cash and in-kind contributions around the world. They are also working on
reducing energy use and reducing greenhouse gas emissions. They claim that they are the leader
in environmentally friendly business practices. Company spends a lot on community service but
it ignores poor working condition, low wages and health care issues. Company is basically trying
to polish its image in the society. Walmart is one of the leading retailing company of the world, it
is ranked 3rd in the world. But due to its discrimination and bad policies regarding employees
they have created a negative image in the society. In order to create a positive image in the
society and among their stakeholders they have started to spend heavily on community services.
In doing so the benefit they have gained is that they are creating a relationship of trust with their
stakeholders.
