The Landscape in French Painting

sr
T HROUGHOUT the centuries, the landscape has been a
source of great inspiration to the painter.

If one goes back to the very beginnings of painting

in Europe, the Italian primitives, one finds the landscape
considered merely as a decorative background and the real
importance given to the figure. This was primarily due to
the influence of the Church which imposed certain standards.

In the sixteenth century the Flemish gave the first

landscape painter to the world, Joachim Pa tinier.

In the seventeenth century, the Dutch made a serious

attempt to break with the traditional interpretation of nature,
prevalent at the time and sponsored a more realistic concep-
tion through such outstanding protagonists as Van Goyen and
the Ruysdaels.

In the eighteenth century artists like Francois Boucher,

Pater or Lancret reverted quite definitely to the conventional
formula which in spite of any artificial tendencies it may
have had, was often an extremely pleasing one.

The aim of the present exhibition is to give as concise

a resume as possible of the historical evolution of French
landscape painting in the nineteenth and first half of the
twentieth centuries.

It is generally admitted that Claude Gellee, known

as " Le Lorrain " has been called the precursor of the modern
landscape. This is why we thought wise to include in this
catalogue two particularly significant canvases of this master
considering them typical of the spirit of continuity which
runs throughout the French pictorial interpretation of the
landscape.

Desiring to adhere to a certain classification which,

though in some respects conventional, is clear cut, the long
period covered by this exposition has been divided into four
parts :—
The Barbizon School, heir to the tradition of com-
position and treatment of the great masters of the seventeenth
and eighteenth centuries, and profoundly influenced by the
naturalistic work of Constable, marked a definite return to
nature, a break with conventions, a search for truth.

With the Impressionist School a certain reaction

set in. The sentimentality of the preceding period was
quite foreign to the new positivist philosophy and there
followed a certain revision of aesthetic values. The painter
was no longer expected to give a poetic rendering of nature.
He abandoned his studio and went out into the open.

In the Post-Impressionist School, it was soon evident

that though considerable progress had been made in painting
a certain poetry, classicism and balance had been lost. In
Seurat and Cezanne, one again finds these characteristically
French qualities which are so admired in Claude Gellee or
in another classical painter like Poussin. Certain definite
rules of composition were enforced. The painter came into
his own.

The development in the Modern School is along the

lines indicated by the Post-Impressionists. The modern
artist hajs not however fully accepted their formula. He
creates his own plastic universe in his studio, respects certain
fundamental and traditional laws of composition and color
and at times relies completely upon his imagination for his
subject. Poetic license prevails.

The public may be surprised at the omission of certain

names. These omissions however have been deliberate.
Great care has been taken to present only the heads of
schools and some of their most important pupils. The
selection, nevertheless, is not an arbitrary one. The names,
which are being presented to the American public to-day
have been almost unanimously accepted by the elite of
the world's painters.
