Online Projects, Collaboration Sites and Publishing Opportunities

Lesson Idea Name: Tell me about your favorite memory narrative writing lesson
Content Area: ELA
Grade Level(s): 6th
Content Standard Addressed: ELAGSE6W3: Write narratives to develop real or imagined experiences or
events using effective technique, relevant descriptive details, and well-structured event sequences
Technology Standard Addressed: Students use digital tools to connect with learners from a variety of
backgrounds and cultures, engaging with them in ways that broaden mutual understanding and learning.

Selected Online Project/Collaboration Site/Publishing Opportunity: Kidpub

URL(s) to support the lesson: Kidpub.com

Describe how you would incorporate an Online Project/Collaboration Site/Publishing Opportunity in your
classroom: I would use publishing sites like Kidpub, in order to allow my students to share their works with
the most authentic audience.

What technologies would be required to implement this proposed learning activity in a classroom? Devices
that can access the internet such as computers or tablets.

Describe how the following features are addressed in this learning experience (note: all of them may not be
addressed in the project, but most should be if you are reaching a high LoTi Level).
a. Collaboration with peers, near-peers, mentors outside their classroom and often beyond their
school: By sharing work on Kidpub.com, students are able to safely collaborate and have dialogue
about writings with each other. They can comment and discuss writing on the website.

b. Student-centered learning and knowledge creation (creating original data and or producing original
products as a result of engaging in a project):

c. Higher-order thinking: Students are creating their own writing piece and then publishing their creation
on Kidpub.

d. Students publishing their original work to others who will use/care about their product: Students
publish their original writings on Kidpub and share them with other students who use the website.

Universal Design for Learning (UDL):

This tool allows for the publishing of all student works. It is web-based so it is accessible on any device that
can access the internet. This activity is student-centered and students have the choice to write about
whatever they chose to prove mastery of the standard.

Online Projects, Collaboration Sites and Publishing Opportunities
Lesson idea implementation and Internet Safety Policies: First, I will run the idea by my administration to
ensure that the use of this tool does not go against any district or school rules. Once, I get approval I will send
an email out to all the parents to let them know we will be using Kidpub. I will be also asking them if they will
consent to their child using Kidpub. I will have all students using Kidpub create a username that does not give
away any personal information or identifiers. An example could be Icecreamlover22. This will protect their
identity and privacy.
Reflective Practice: This activity would be the final activity in our lesson on narrative writings. Students will be
uploading their writings of their favorite memory to Kidpub. I feel that this helps student learning because it
allows them to interact and collaborate with students outside of their classroom/school to learn and discuss
writing. Other tools used include BPT such as Microsoft Word.
