ro ABSTRACT
A water cooling tower ving an improved water collection
system. The cooling tower hasan outer shel, egs, and one or
‘ore layers of fill material, throngh which the water to be
cooled moves vertically downward. The water is distributed
soross the upper surface of the fill material by piping and
nozzles. fan underlying thei material moves ar vertically
‘upssard rough the fill material, The water collection system,
Which is positioned below the fill material, has upper and
lower troughs which recive water flowing vertically down-
‘ward through the fill material. Preferably, the Tower troughs
‘re positioned beneath the spaces between upper troughs 0
catch water falling between the upper troughs. A number of
hinged baffles close ofthe spaces between lower troughs, but
rotate upward in response to upward ai How and open the
spaces between the lower troughs.

COOLING TOWER
(CROSS REFERENCE TO RELATED
APPLICATIONS:
“This gular patem application claims peiorty to US. pro-
visional patent application Ser. No. 61/286,90, led Avg 26,
200, forall purposes
BACKGROUND
1. Field ofthe Invention
‘This invention relates to cooling towers, used for the cool
ing of waterin various systems, More particularly, this inven
tion relates to cooling tower, which may be a transportable
‘cooling tower, having an improved water collection sytem,
2, Description of Related An.
‘Generally, cooling towers inthe relevant feld have a tower
shell which holds various other components (deseribed
below) legs which postion the cooling tower shell at a
dlsired elevation above datum surface (typically the ground
‘ora pad), and which preferably permit transportation ofthe
‘cooling ower by trock (for example, legs which tract, fold,
are removable, oF any combination threo!) a means for
‘moving ai trough the cooling tower, typically one or more
fans located atthe aie inlet or discharge which draw or force
sir upwardly throogh the cooling ower through one or more
layers of cooling tower fil, positioned above an arinlet area
such dat ae los upwad and conater to dowawardly flow
ing water, a means for distributing water across the upper
surface ofthe fil material, namely’ water distribution system,
above the fil, generally comprising piping including a water
supply header, lateral lines, and muliplenozzes to distebute
‘water seross te top ofthe fill surface; and deft eliminators
above the water distribution system which minimize the
‘amount of water droplets which are blown out of the ait by
the upward airflow.
‘key structural and funcional clement of the cooling,
tower ofthe present invention is 2 water collection system
‘which allows air to pass upwardly through the wate cllec-
tion ystem while collecting water that ls into it, so that the
‘water can be gravity drained oF pumped out for cycling
through the system. A further key aspect of the present inven
lionisa cooling tower havinga water colection system which
ives rise to a numberof fabrication and operational advan
tages over the known existing designs
BRIEF DESCRIPTION OF THE DRAWINGS
IG. isan isometric view of an exemplary cooling tower.
FIG. 2 is aside view i partial cross section ofa cooling
tower of the present invention, showing further structural
detail ofthe various cooling tower components and detail of
the water collection system,
FIG. 3 is detailed view of various components of the
water collection system of the present invention, shown in
‘ross section view fom one side of the cooling tower.
FIG. 4 is another detailed view of the water collection
stem ofthe presentineation, including arowsshowing the
lretions of water andar ow though the system,
FIG. 5 isa view of an end bracket
FIG. 6s a view of an end bracket in place on the cooling
tower, holding various elements ofthe Water collection sys-
tem in pace
FIG. Tisa side view of another embodiment ofthe present
invention, comprising only a single layer of wate collection
troughs.
