CROCHET INSTRUCTIONS
OPTION: When crocheting with Aunt Lydia’s bamboo thread, rather than beginning with a chain, consider beginning this
dress with a single crochet foundation row. The benefit to beginning in this way is that a single crochet foundation gives
that first row of your dress a stretchy quality. With such tiny dresses, being a couple of millimeters off because of a tight
foundation chain can cause the dress to be too small once the snaps are added; the foundation single crochet row reduces
the likelihood of this significantly. Here is a link to a YouTube that will teach your how to make this special beginning stitch:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fG‐LiTY_khs. If you choose to begin in this way, you are making both the chain and
Row 1, so you will skip to Row 2 after your single crochet foundation. I don’t recommend using this row with cotton thread,
as it doesn’t produce the correct gauge.
COLOR
Starting with the neckline, chain 42 st (should measure between 4” and 4 ¼”)
Row 1: ch 1, sc into 2nd ch from hook, sc across (42 st)
Row 2: ch 1, turn, sc in next 5 st, ch 2, skip 11 st, sc in next 10 stitches,
ch 2, skip 11 st, sc in next 5 st (24 st)
Arm holes made.

TIP: In the next row, when I reach the sets of three chain stitches that make up the “underarms,” I pull out a
1.5MM hook to crochet into these chains. The small hook slides into these tight chains so much more easily and
makes this row much less of a strain. For all of the single crocheting into single crochets in this row, I use my
1.90MM or 1.80 hook.
Row 3: ch 2 (serves as first dc in each row), turn, dc into next 2 st, (2 dc into next st, 1 dc into next st) re‐
peat across (36 st)
Row 4: ch 2, turn, crocheting into back loops only in this row, dc into beginning ch, dc into next 2 st, (2 dc
into next st, dc into next 2 st) repeat to end (48 st), sl st into beginning ch 2 to make a round.
Row 5: ch 2, dc around, sl st into beginning chain (48 st)
Row 6: ch 2, dc around crocheting into back loops only, sl st into beginning chain (48 st)
Row 7: ch 2, dc around crocheting into both loops, sl st into beginning chain (48 st)
Row 8: ch 2, dc around crocheting into back loops only, sl st into beginning chain (48 st)
Row 9: ch 2, dc around crocheting into both loops, sl st into beginning chain (48 st)
Row 10: sk st, 4 dc into next stitch, (sk st, sl st, sk st, 4 dc into next st) repeat (12 shells)
Now you will return to rows 8, 6, and 4,
in that order, and crochet shells into
the exposed front loops of each row.
By adding shells from bottom to top,
you can easily check to make sure that
Row 8 your shells are aligning with those in
Row 10.
Row 6
Row 4
In the rows that follow, when you bind off, leave a 7 or 8 inch tail. You can then use these tails to tack the shells
down around the dress. I weave my tails through the double crochets, reaching my needle up and grabbing a
small portion of the shell, then stitching back the other direction to create a tack. Then I continue on through
the double crochets to the next shell. When you have made your way around, secure your thread by making
three tiny stitches on top of each other, or by using your own method of choice.

Row 8: Starting in the back, insert hook in exposed front
loop at the joining seam, (sk st, 4 dc into next st,
sk st, sl st) repeat (12 shells)
Row 6: Starting in the back, insert hook in exposed front
loop at the joining seam, (sk st, 4 dc into next st,
sk st, sl st) repeat (12 shells)
Row 4: Starting in the back, insert hook in exposed front
loop at the joining seam, (sk st, 4 dc into next st,
sk st, sl st) repeat (9 shells)
FINISHING
Return to the neckline of dress. Insert hook into the left side of the back, pull up a loop, and sc around creating
a more finished neckline.
Thoroughly weave in the ends. Sew on the snaps with invisible thread.
TIP 1: Thoroughly weaving in your ends is essential to making a durable piece of clothing for your
critters. With well woven in ends, your piece is virtually indestructible. (Well, yes, snaps will
fall off over time, but they can be replaced!)
TIP 2: When working with invisible thread, lay down a piece of black construction paper or other
black “background” that will bring your thread into relief. Much easier on the eyes!

Additional Options: As with all patterns, there are many ways to alter this pattern to make slightly different
dresses. You can eliminate one ruffle or many ruffles, as can be seen in the pink and yellow dresses. You can
still create rows in which you have exposed front loops to give some texture to your dress, or you can crochet
into both loops where you don’t intend to put ruffles to create a smoother look.

CROCHET INSTRUCTIONS
Here is the fun part where your creativity can take over. There are endless possibilities.
Add a tiny crocheted flower or heart to the bodice. Embroider a flower or design on the jumper.
There are amazing tiny flower patterns all over the internet. I created the following patterns in an effort
to come up with a super tiny flower. However, it is fun to use bigger flowers and different flower patterns.
Here is a very pretty little flower pattern that I love to use: http://attic24.typepad.com/weblog/teeny‐tiny‐
flowers.html. The flowers shown on the dresses and headbands were made with the following patterns.
FLOWER
Ch 4, slip stitch together into a round.
Row 1: (ch 4, sl st into ring) repeat 5 or 6 times depending
on the number of petals you would like to have.
Bind off. Weave in ends a little and then use remainder of tails
to sew the flower to the garment or headpiece.
EMBROIDERED FLOWER INSTRUCTIONS. Here is a link to instructions for how to embroider a “lazy daisy.”
This makes a very sweet embellishment on a jumper or dress, and can be made smaller and daintier if you use
embroidery thread and divide it and use only three strands of the embroidery thread.
