A number in parentheses indicates the year of last approval A superscript epsilon (indicates an editorial change since the lat revision or approval This specification has been approved or use by agencies of the Department of Defense 1o replace Federal Speciation SS-S-44, Class Types 1 I I. and for listing inthe DoD Index of Speciation: and Standards, 1. Scope LL This specification covers the quality and sizes of crushed stone, crushed slag, and gravel suitable for use as aggregate in single or multiple bituminous surface treat- ments, 1.2 The values in SI units are to be regarded as standard. Inch-pound units, shown in parentheses, are for information only. 2. Referenced Documents 2.1 ASTM Standards: € 29/C 29M Test Method for Unit Weight and Voids in Aggregate? Terminology 3.1. Description of Terms: 3.1.1 crushed stone, n—the product resulting from the artificial crushing of rocks, boulders, or large cobblestones, substantially all faces of which have resulted from the crushing operation. 3.1.2 crushed slag, n—the product resulting from the ‘crushing of air-cooled iron blast-furnace slag. ‘This specification is under the jurisdiction of ASTM Commitee D-4 on Roads and’ Paving Materials and is the direct responsibility of Subcommiter 'Do4.50 on Aggregate Specifications. Current edition approved Sep. 10,1995. Published November 1995, Originally published as D1139-80°T. Last previous edition D 1139-90. 2 annual Book of ASTM Standards, Vol 04.02 2 Annual Book of ASTM Standards, Vol 04.03, 8 3.1.3 gravel, n—the product resulting from natural disin- tegration and abrasion of rock or processing of weakly bound conglomerate. Crushing may be employed in the processing of gravel to an extent depending on the size present in the natural deposit and product requirements. 3.1.3.1 uncrushed gravel, n—the product resulting from screening and blending of material from the deposit, con- sisting of particles with a shape and texture largely dependent on the nature of the deposit. The product may include some particles with fracture faces resulting from crushing oversize material, 3.1.3.2 crushed gravel, n—the product resulting from the crushing of gravel, with a requirement that at least a prescribed percentage of the resulting particles have fracture faces. Some uncrushed particles may be included. 4. Ordering Information 4.1 Orders for material under this specification shall include the following information: 4.1.1 Specification designation number and year of issue, 4.1.2 Size to be furnished (see 6.1), 4.1.3 Quantity required, 4.1.4 Type of aggregate, whether crushed stone, crushed slag, crushed gravel, or uncrushed gravel. If no type is specified, any of the types may be furnished. In the case of crushed gravel, if the percentage of particles with fracture faces desired is different than that specified in 5.3, the ‘minimum percentage desired shall be specified, and 4.1.5 Any special requirements. 5. Physical Requirements 5.1 Resistance to Degradation by the Los Angeles Ma- chine—The aggregate (with the exception of crushed slag), shall conform to the following requirement for resistance to degradation as determined by the Los Angeles Machine: Loss, max, % 0 5.2. Unit Weight of Slag—Crushed slag shall conform to the following requirement for unit weight, rodded: ‘Unit Weight, min, kg/m? (/) 1120 70) 5.3 Crushed Particles—Crushed gravel shall consist of particles with not less than 60 weight % of the portion retained on a 4.75-mm (No. 4) sieve having at least two fracture faces. Nore 1—Some sources of gravel contain angular particles that will perform similarly to a mechanically crushed particle. Such angular particles may be considered as crushed, Gb p 1139 5.4 Soundness—The aggregate shall conform to the fol- lowing requirement when exposed to five cycles of the soundness test: 12, when sodium sult is used, or 18, when magnesium slate is sed 5.5. Deleterious Substances—The requirements prescribed in Table 1 apply to crushed stone, crushed slag, and gravel. ‘The limits for clay lumps and friable particles, and for material floating on a liquid with a specific gravity of 2.0, shall be based on the portion of the sample retained on a 4.75-mm (No. 4) sieve. 6. Aggregate Size 6.1 The aggregate shall conform to Classification D 448 for the size indicated by the purchaser. 7. Sampling and Testing 7.1 Sample the aggregates and determine the properties ‘enumerated in this specification in accordance with the following test methods: 7.1.1 Sampling—Practice D 75. 7.1.2 Random Sampling—Practice D 3665. 7.1.3 Degradation Resistance—Test Method C 131 TABLE 1 Requirements for Deleterious Substances Datos Sibsures wea ‘Clay lumps and friable particles 30 ~ Tet oowe ona bau a pect raty FF wr20" fut cated pss. redo te 8. Keywords 8.1 aggregate; bituminous surface treatments; crushed slag; crushed stone; gravel; surface treatments APPENDIX (Nonmandatory Information) Xi, SELECTION OF AGGREGATE SIZES XI.1 The size of the aggregate will vary with the thickness of the surface course desired and with the type of construc- tion contemplated, as described in the following statements: XLLI Single Surface Treatment—A single surface treat- ment is a wearing surface of bituminous material and aggregate in which the aggregate is placed uniformly over the applied bituminous materials in a single layer, the thickness of which approximates the nominal maximum size of the aggregate used. X1.1.2 Multiple Surface Treatments—A multiple surface treatment is a wearing surface composed of bituminous ‘material and aggregate, in which the coarser aggregate is placed uniformly over an initial application of bituminous material and followed by subsequent applications of bitumi- nous material and smaller aggregate. Generally, the desig- nated maximum size of the smaller aggregate is one half that of the aggregate used in the preceding application. Each tion of aggregate should be placed uniformly in a single layer, the thickness of which approximates the nom- inal maximum size of the aggregate. X12 The standard sizes recommended for aggregates for several thicknesses and types of surface treatments are listed in Table X.1. The grading requirements for these standard sizes are given in Classification D 448, 9 TABLE X1 Aggregate Sizes for Ditforent Thicknesses and ‘Surface Treatments Sutece Treatrert Sie ‘Sizes of Aapregates Type Applicaton NO.” Nemna size, Square Openings ‘Sige int 5 2501 125 mm(1 to in) 5 1801085 mn 10% In) 7 12510475 mm (tn. too. 4) 395 102.38 mm Gin. 10 No. 8) 9 47510 118 mm (No.4 to No. 16) Dole nit 5 25010 125 mm(t toh) second «712510475 mm (Vein, toNo. 4) Dowie inital 5 19.010 95mme% to%in) secon B85 102.38 mm Pein. to No. 8) Tipe iti 5 25010125 mm(1 to ¥en) second 7=——125104.75mm(%s in. toNo. 4) ‘ee 9 475101.18 mm No. 4 to No. 18) Topload 5 1901095 mm (4 ton) second B95 102.36 mm (ein. 10 NO. 8) tie 9 __475101.18 mm(No. 4 10 No. 16)
