was in a celebratory mood early last
spring as he prepared to sign an exec-
utive order rolling back environmental
protections reviled by the nation’s coal
industry.
Turning to the miners beside him at
the ceremony, Trump repeated a
promise that he made often during his
campaign for president.
“You’re going back to work,” he said
to nods of approval and applause.
But not much has changed for the
nation’s ailing coal industry since
Trump moved into the White House.

leaders are adamant that Trump al-

their industry. For the first time in
years, they say, miners are daring to

leadership, as well as the rank and file,
is we’ve got a future,” said Luke Pop-
ovich, a spokesman for the National
Mining Association. “We’re back in
business.”
No one is naïve enough to think that
coal will return anytime soon to its

strike that might not deter Assad from
chemical attacks or a wider response
that risks drawing the United States
deeper into a global conflict.
“The likeliest option is exactly what
we saw before: an airstrike that the
president puts forward as a so-called
tough response but doesn’t do very
much to degrade Assad’s forces or to
punish him for his ongoing use of
chemical weapons,” said Jonah Blank,
an analyst at RAND Corp.
“This is more about his use of chem-
ical weapons than it is the outcome of
the war,” said Andrew Tabler, an ana-
lyst at the Washington Institute for
Near East Policy.
A year ago, Trump ordered a strike
on the regime’s military forces after a
similar chemical attack. That didn’t
stop Assad from expanding control
over the country — largely because
most of the regime’s military might
comes from Russia and Iran. Russia
has provided air power and other sup-
port; Iran supplies the ground forces.
The strike was carefully limited —
59 U.S. Tomahawk cruise missiles that
damaged about 20 Syrian aircraft, or
20% of its operational warplanes. The
United States warned Russia of the at-
tack before it launched the missiles.

But after eight years of President
Obama and environmental policies the
industry considered hostile, coal lead-
ers believe Trump is putting them back
on a level playing field with natural gas
and other cleaner forms of energy.
“What has happened, I think, is it has
given the industry and investors the as-
surance that at least their government is
not going to discourage production and
we only have to deal with the market-
place,” Popovich said.
“Instead of having to fight natural
gas, subsidized renewals and our own
government, now we are at least free to
compete in the marketplace. That has
been the big change as far as we’re
concerned.”
Other changes have been slow in
coming.
Coal employment has barely budged
under Trump. Roughly 2,000 new coal
jobs were created during Trump’s first
eight months in office, but those num-
bers started to level off last October. By
the end of 2017, the total number of coal
jobs gained over the previous year was
just 900, according to the Bureau of
Labor Statistics.
Preliminary figures for 2018 show a
slight increase, with a net gain of
1,300 coal mining jobs during Trump’s
presidency.
Coal production has risen slightly,
about 6% last year, from 728 million
tons in 2016 to 774 million tons in 2017,
according to the U.S. Energy Informa-
tion Administration. But analysts attri-
bute the increase in part to the bank-
ruptcy-caused restructuring of several
major coal producers, which resulted in
lower production costs.
Coal consumption last year fell to
717 million tons, slightly lower than the
year before. Even more alarming for the
industry: Almost all domestic coal con-
sumption is in the power sector, yet de-
spite an increase in natural gas prices in
2017, coal’s share of power generation
for the year was just 30%, the lowest on
record and lower than natural gas for
the second year in a row.
In promising to end the “war on coal,”
Trump may not have had a firm under-
standing of the extent of the industry’s

chemical attack was intended to force
the militants to concede after the talks
broke down, she said.
Monday, Russia blamed Israel for a
missile attack on an air base in central
Syria. The Pentagon denied Syrian
media reports that the United States
conducted the airstrikes in Syria.
Trump could order a sustained air
campaign.
“Nothing is off the table,” he said at a
Cabinet meeting Monday. “We’ll be
making some major decisions over the
next 24 to 48 hours.” Sunday, he said
there would be “a big price to pay” by
Syria and Assad. “This is about human-
ity ... and it can’t be allowed to happen.”
The United States has asked the
U.N. Security Council to authorize an
independent investigation into the at-
tack. Almost two weeks ago, Trump
said he wanted to withdraw U.S. forces
from Syria. The White House later
qualified his remarks to say there was
no timetable for withdrawal.

were good and are good,” said Rappold,
a Democrat. “I think perhaps his realiza-
tion of the state of the coal industry, for
a whole lot of reasons, is maybe a little
off-target. It’s not just a matter of a
presidential decree that we’re going to

One bright spot last year was coal
exports, which are expected to total 97
million tons in 2017, a 61% increase over
the year before.
But analysts say the boost in exports
is attributable to international market
factors beyond the Trump administra-
tion’s influence and probably will be
short-lived. The demand for U.S. coal
increased last year in China, Japan and
India when a tropical cyclone disrupted
their supply from Australia. Coal ex-
ports are expected to decrease in 2018
and 2019, the Energy Information Ad-
ministration projects.
Coal industry leaders say the nation-
al statistics don’t tell the whole story.

platforms were paid several hundred
thousand dollars by House offices last
year, the disclosures show. Some con-
gressional aides paid for ads with per-
sonal credit cards, so those expendi-
tures showed up as reimbursements to
staff, further obscuring how much was
for Facebook vs. another outlet.
Offices that use Facebook not only
get to direct the ads to their districts —
a requirement under House rules —
but they also can target specific groups
of constituents, such as veterans or
those over 55 years old.
The content of taxpayer-financed
ads must be approved by the biparti-
san House Franking Commission, the
group that regulates official mass
mailings that members of Congress
can send to constituents. All “official”
social media accounts face restric-
tions, including a ban on petitions, ad-
vertising or endorsing a product or ser-
vice, and grass-roots lobbying. House
offices cannot target members of only
one party or try to raise money.
In some cases, online ad restric-
tions are tougher than those on mail-
ings. An online ad cannot feature a
lawmaker’s picture, for example.
Only a handful of topics are allowed
to be covered in online ads placed with
taxpayer funding, such as seeking
candidates for possible nomination to
military academies, inviting the public
to a town hall meeting or reminding
people their representatives can help
with Medicare, Social Security, immi-
gration or other federal programs.
One of the approved categories —
telling the public “how to subscribe to
the member’s e-communications pro-
gram” — allows public dollars to go for
ads encouraging the public to “like” a
lawmaker’s official Facebook page.
Leaders of each party have annual
contests in which lawmakers compete
to see who can get the biggest increase
in online followers to Facebook, Twit-
ter, YouTube and Instagram.
“The point of the competition is to
strengthen communications with con-
stituents because that is where they
are getting information,” said Mariel
Since Trump took office, coal compa-
nies have reopened or are planning to
reopen mines in Pennsylvania, Indiana,
Ohio, West Virginia, Alabama and
Washington.
Yet coal employment numbers fail to
take into account that many miners
have gone back to work as contractors or
that contractors who work as suppliers
also are back on the job, said Terry
Headley of the American Coal Council.
What’s more, some areas that were
hit especially hard by coal’s decline
have seen the strongest recovery. West
Virginia, for example, saw a more than
15% increase in coal employment last
year. Those jobs help fuel the local econ-
omy since miners earn an average
$84,000 a year, twice the average wage
in many coal-producing states.
Also, actions taken by the Trump ad-
ministration, such as the rollback of
Obama-era regulations on power plant
emissions and coal mining on federal
lands, have yet to produce any far-
reaching, tangible results but could
benefit the coal industry down the road.
In southwest Virginia coal country,
however, officials say they already see
signs the industry is on the rebound:
Tax dollars generated from coal mining
and sales have risen slightly in the past
year.
Buchanan County, which borders
both Kentucky and West Virginia, is
seeing $150,000 to $200,000 more in
coal severance tax dollars every month
compared with the monthly totals a
year ago, said Craig Horn, the county
administrator.

runs the Democrats’ annual challenge.
Getting constituents to “like” a mem-
ber’s page is important because once
they do, posts to the page may appear in
the user’s personal Facebook feed,
though that happens less often since
Facebook changed the algorithm that
controls the feed. Posts to congressional
pages are subject to less restrictions
than the ads, so members can tell users
more about what they are doing.
Saez said Facebook ads are a cost-
effective way of giving people an oppor-
tunity to engage with lawmakers.
“Members must conform to strict
rules to ensure the communications are
proper,” she said. “Offices use the tools
that Facebook provides to target our ads
to constituents who are likely going to
want to see content from members, just
as a small business would target ads to
prospective customers. We do not
‘obtain’ any private information from
Facebook users.”
“Facebook, and social media in gen-
eral, provides a modern way to directly
reach constituents and allows them to
provide direct feedback,” said Chris
Berardi, spokesman for Rep. Francis
Rooney, R-Fla. “Our goal is to reach as
many constituents as possible in what-
ever manner they choose to consume
their information.”
Rooney, a freshman, spent the most
of any member directly on Facebook ads
last year, $13,300. The highest direct
spending by a Democrat was another
freshman, Rep. Lou Correa, D-Calif.,
who spent $12,600.

Whether that can be attributed to
Trump is hard to say, Horn said, but “a
lot of people seem to think so.”
For now, Horn said, people sense
that the coal industry is stable and will
probably remain so for the next couple
of years.
Regardless, the long-term future for
coal is not promising, Kaufman said,
pointing to a study last year by Colum-
bia’s Center on Global Energy Policy.
The report concluded that low natural
gas prices and the growth in renewable
energy were more of a factor in the de-
cline of domestic coal consumption
than environmental regulations.
“There’s no reason to think the for-
tunes of the coal industry are going to
change anytime in the future,” Kaufman
said. “Coal is an industry in decline.”
Even in coal country, people accept
that coal’s halcyon days are over, Rap-
pold said.
“Ninety-nine out of 100 people you
talk to will say the days of the tremen-
dous booms in coal are gone,” he said.
“We’ve ridden the cyclical effect of coal
for the past 70 years or so, experiencing
really great boom times with probably
fewer periods of downturns in the in-
dustry. But people realize we will never
see those extreme boom times again.”

FBI seizes data in raid
on Trump lawyer’s offices

FBI agents raided the New York of-
fices of President Trump’s personal law-
yer Michael Cohen and other related lo-
cations Monday.
Attorney Stephen Ryan, who repre-
sents Cohen, confirmed the searches,
indicating that agents acted in part on a
referral by special counsel Robert
Mueller to federal prosecutors in New
York — related to issues separate from
Mueller’s investigation into Russia’s al-
leged interference in the 2016 elections.
“Today, the U.S. Attorney’s Office for
the Southern District of New York exe-
cuted a series of search warrants and
seized the privileged communications
between my client, Michael Cohen, and
his clients,” Ryan said in a statement.
Ryan called the action “completely
inappropriate and unnecessary.”
“It resulted in the unnecessary sei-
zure of protected attorney-client com-
munications between a lawyer and his
clients,” Ryan said. “These government
tactics are also wrong because Mr. Co-
hen has cooperated completely with all
government entities, including provid-
ing thousands of non-privileged docu-
ments to the Congress and sitting for
depositions under oath.”
Trump called the action “a disgrace-
ful situation.”
“It’s a total witch hunt,” the president
said at the White House. “It’s an attack
on our country in the true sense ... what
we all stand for.”
Trump continued his criticism of At-
torney General Jeff Sessions, reiterating
that he never would have appointed the
former Alabama senator had he known
Sessions would recuse himself from the
Russia inquiry. Sessions’ recusal led to
Mueller’s appointment.
Ryan did not detail what communi-
cations FBI agents sought.

Someone yelled “duck” seconds be-
fore a packed charter bus slammed into
an overpass on a Long Island highway,
ripping the top off the bus and injuring
dozens of teens, their chaperones and
the driver, a New York State Police
spokesman said Monday.
Maj. David Candelaria said bridges
on the Southern State Parkway are too
low to accommodate buses, and the
driver apparently was unaware that
commercial vehicles are banned. The
driver, identified as Troy Gaston of
Bethlehem, Pa., did not slow down be-
fore hitting the overpass, Candelaria
said. “If you look at the damage, it was a
high-impact strike. We are very lucky.
This could have been tragic.”
The bus was traveling Sunday night
from John F. Kennedy International Air-
port to a mall in Huntington, where the
travelers were to be reunited with their
families after a spring break trip to East-
ern Europe. Photos from the scene of the
crash showed the roof of the bus had
been torn down to the top of the seats.
Candelaria said Gaston, all 38 stu-
dents and the five chaperones were tak-
en to hospitals. Two teen girls remained

Cohen has acknowledged using his
own money to “facilitate” a $130,000
payment to porn star Stormy Daniels
days before the 2016 election.
Cohen said he was not reimbursed by
the Trump campaign or the Trump Or-
ganization. Last week, Trump denied
knowing about the payment or where
the hush money came from.
If Cohen used his own money and
acted without Trump’s knowledge, it
could be considered an illegal contribu-
tion to Trump’s campaign and put him
in legal jeopardy. Legal ethics rules bar
attorneys from settling a claim without
their clients’ knowledge or using their
own money to fund settlements.
The watchdog group Common Cause
filed complaints this year with the Jus-
tice Department and the Federal Elec-
tion Commission, asking the agencies to
investigate the payment as a possible
violation of campaign-finance laws.
Paul Ryan, the group’s vice president
of policy and litigation, said he felt vin-
dicated by the Justice Department’s
pursuit of Cohen.
“I’m happy to see the DOJ is doing its
hospitalized Monday with injuries he
described as serious.
Gaston passed a test for alcohol at
the scene and cooperated with investi-
gators, Candelaria said. He said Gas-
ton was directed onto the parkway by a
“non-commercial GPS device,” and the
driver was remorseful and very upset.
No charges had been filed, but Can-
delaria said police were still investi-
gating. The bus was operated by Jour-
ney Bus Line, which did not respond to
a request for comment.
Hempstead Town Supervisor Laura
Gillen said she was praying for the in-
jured and their families, adding that “a
lot of questions need to be answered.”
Newsday reported that plans were
in the works for an electronic system
that would warn drivers when vehicles
are too high for an overpass on the
parkway. The system, which is in place
on the Northern State Parkway, trig-
gers an alert on an overhead electronic
road sign that warns the driver to pull
over. It also alerts state police.
“Everybody was able to walk out
except one, which we extricated,”
Lakeview Fire Department Chief Pat-
rick McNeill told Newsday. “There was
glass everywhere. The roof of the bus
is down to the top of the seat covers.”

nothing about the payment to Stormy
Daniels. The FBI will now quickly get
to the bottom of whether Trump lied to
the American people.”
Michael Avenatti, a lawyer repre-
senting Daniels, said Cohen was
“placed in the crosshairs by Mr.
Trump.”
“He has been set up to take the fall,”
Avenatti said in a statement after news
of the raid emerged. The raid was first
reported by The New York Times.
“An enormous amount of misplaced
faith has been placed on his shoulders,
and I do not believe he has the mettle
to withstand it,” Avenatti said. “If I am
correct, this could end very, very badly
for Mr. Trump and others.”
Daniels, whose legal name is Ste-
phanie Clifford, sued Trump and Co-
hen in an effort to invalidate the agree-
ment she said she signed 11 days before
the election. Daniels said she had a
sexual encounter with Trump in 2006.
In a 60 Minutes interview last month,
Daniels said she feared for her safety.

human migration out of Africa was

than thought, a new study suggests.
The fossil, an adult human’s finger
bone, dates to 90,000 years ago, when
the region’s barren desert was green
grassland.
Study lead author Huw Groucutt of
the University of Oxford said the dis-
covery shows for the first time that
early humans lived in an expansive
region in southwest Asia and weren’t
restricted to the Levant, an area that
includes modern-day Israel, Lebanon,
Syria and Jordan.
“The ability of these early people to
widely colonize this region casts doubt
on long-held views that early dispers-
als out of Africa were localized and un-
successful,” Groucutt said.
The earliest Homo sapiens fossils
date to about 315,000 years ago from
Africa. Previously discovered human
fossils show an earlier human pres-
ence in Israel and possibly China.
The finger bone was discovered in
2016 at the site of Al Wusta, an ancient
freshwater lake in the arid Nefud
Desert, about 340 miles southeast of
the Sinai Peninsula.
Archaeologists had believed hu-
manity’s movement out of Africa was
in a single, rapid wave about 60,000
years ago, study co-author Michael
Petraglia, an archaeologist from Ger-
many’s Max Planck Institute, said at a
news briefing.
The fossil finding instead suggests
modern humans moved out of Africa
multiple times during many windows
of opportunity in the past 100,000
years or so, he said.
The authors concluded from the
early incursion into what was a green
Arabia that human movement out of
Africa may have been helped by natu-
ral climate change in the form of in-
creased precipitation.

lands of the Levant — which were sus-
tained by winter rainfall — but also
semi-arid grasslands in the Arabian in-
terior such as Al Wusta. The region was
“a fertile, lowland zone attractive to col-
onization by plants, animals and hu-
mans,” Donald Henry, an anthropologist
at the University of Tulsa, said in an ar-
ticle that accompanied the study.
The authors suggested that adapting
to the new environment would have
been an early step on Homo sapiens’
path to global success.
The results were published Monday
in the journal Nature Ecology and
Evolution.

In the past three administrations, if
a president needs to look tough on ille-
gal immigration, he sends the National
Guard to the Mexican border.
President George W. Bush did so in
2006. At the time, he was promoting a
sweeping immigration overhaul that
would have included a path to citizen-
ship for many of the 11 million undocu-
mented people in America. His move
was designed in part to signal skeptics
that he was serious about enforcement.
President Obama wanted to send a
similar message with his deployment,
beginning in 2010. He never did get a
measure through the House of Repre-
sentatives. But he would continue the
program through most of his presiden-
cy in a vain hope that it, and relatively
robust deportation policies, would
mollify opposition to his executive or-
ders on immigration.
Now it is President Trump’s turn. He
announced a plan to send 2,000 to
4,000 troops after taking heat from
conservatives for signing a spending
bill that did not include funding for a
border wall (you know, the one Mexico
was supposed to pay for).
Deploying troops isn’t one of
Trump’s worst acts. It’s just not partic-
ularly cost-effective or useful. Mem-
bers of the National Guard are not able
to make arrests, are not trained in im-
migration enforcement and — in some
cases — do not particularly relish being
called up, or away from training, to play
a backup role. The two previous pro-
grams yielded modest results at best.
If more resources are needed, the
proper response is to hire more Border
Patrol or Immigration and Customs En-
forcement agents. But that, too, is a bit
tricky. Last year, the Department of
Homeland Security’s own inspector
general said neither agency could ade-
quately explain how it would use a pro-
posed increase. Both agencies under-
went massive expansions in the latter

The most fundamental responsibil-
ity of government is to protect its citi-
zens. This is an issue for all governors,
but it has added meaning and complex-
ity for border governors.
For those living with the conse-
quences of Washington’s failures, bor-
der security isn’t a political issue, it’s a
personal one. I’ve grieved with the wid-
ow of a rancher slain by an illegal im-
migrant and with the family members
of agent Brian Terry, who was gunned
down by cartel members 10 miles north
of the Arizona-Mexico border. I’ve
spent time with parents whose chil-
dren’s lives were ruined by the drugs
smuggled across our border.
The majority of illegal drugs in this
country come through our southern
border. If you know someone impacted
by drug addiction, there’s a good
chance their last “hit” came from drugs
that flowed through Arizona.
For years, Americans, particularly in
border states such as Arizona, have
been calling on the federal government
to secure our border.
It is frustrating to hear the rhetoric
from the talking heads on cable news

Bush and early Obama years, and have
struggled ever since to attract and re-
tain skilled agents.
What’s more, despite Trump’s scare
talk about caravans coming through
Mexico, the nature of illegal immigra-
tion has changed dramatically in recent
years. The Pew Research Center esti-
mates that the undocumented popula-
tion in the USA dropped from 12.2 mil-
lion in 2007 to 11.3 million in 2016. The
decline would have been more dramat-
ic had it not been for a robust business
in people overstaying their visas.
Though administration officials
point to this year’s large spring increase
(a “surge” they call it), this comes after
a 2017 that saw the smallest number of
border arrests in 46 years.
Trump’s anti-immigrant posture
undoubtedly played a role in last year’s
totals, and there’s a place for improved
physical barriers along some parts of
the border as part of a comprehensive
security plan.
But what will the president’s extra
troops do, and why is he so fixated with
the U.S.-Mexico border?
The best way to answer these ques-
tions is to see Trump’s move for what it
is — political theater, rather than a bold
policy initiative.

ministration’s actions to address bor-
der security. The announcement by
President Trump to call up the National
Guard to support the mission of the

like to play politics with the issue.
Those of us on the border don’t have
that luxury. Instead, while the politicos
and pundits are busy shouting at each
other, we are addressing the challenges
of managing a state on the border.
We’re working to save lives threat-
ened by the hands of cartel members or
by drug addiction — and the lives of
those trying to cross Arizona’s unfor-
giving desert. States such as Arizona
have stepped up when Washington has
failed and spent tens of millions of our
state’s taxpayer dollars to supplement
the great work of an understaffed Cus-
toms and Border Protection.
But with a border nearly 373 miles —
longer than the entire length of Penn-
sylvania — we can’t do this on our own.

Don’t spare Facebook
or Mark Zuckerberg
Lawmakers must be
tough and well prepared

Reclusive Facebook CEO Mark Zuck-
erberg’s week of reckoning is here. He’ll
finally face questions from Congress
about his company’s negligence in al-
lowing Cambridge Analytica to filch
personal data on as many as 87 million
Facebook subscribers without their as-
sent — and use the information to boost
the electoral fortunes of Donald Trump
in the 2016 presidential election.
For far too long, Zuckerberg has re-
lied upon legions of surrogates, under-
lings and flacks and a blizzard of apolo-
getic press releases to shield him from
accountability. The burden is now on
three Senate and House committees to
press the attack on his elaborately
crafted image that he is nothing more
than a humble coder who cares more
about lavishing billions of dollars on
worthy causes than selling ad space on
his platform.
Zuckerberg will certainly shed the
gray T-shirt of humility for the occa-
sion. In prepared testimony, he has al-
ready offered repentance and vowed to
do better. But committee members can-
not let him off the hook. In the past,
they have proved willing to mercilessly
grill business executives, high-level po-
litical appointees and lobbyists, and
wring confessions from them.
In 2005, Republican John McCain of
Arizona used his chairmanship of the
Senate Committee on Indian Affairs to
expose the fraudulent licensing of casi-
nos by officials of the Interior Depart-
ment as part of a broader investigation
into the machinations of super-lobby-
ist Jack Abramoff.
Before that there was Rep. Henry
Waxman’s 1994 interrogation of tobac-
co company executives. The California
Democrat compelled them to produce
evidence from their own scientists
showing that, contrary to their claims,
their product was addictive.
If the committee members do their
homework, they may reveal problems
with Facebook that have yet to surface,
or even illuminate broader issues of
privacy and manipulation across the
tech industry. A well-prepared ques-
tioner is able to elicit revealing facts

sive witnesses.
In December, Sen. John Neely Ken-
nedy, R-La., respectfully but relentless-
ly pressed President Trump’s nominee
for a judgeship on the U.S. District
Court. His questions revealed that the
candidate was not only lacking in any
judicial experience, but also was un-
able to answer questions that could
have been tackled by most third-year
law students. The nomination was sub-
sequently withdrawn.
There might be a temptation on the
part of some members to be gentle with
the Hermit of Menlo Park because of
his philanthropy and shy, boyish man-
ner. But Zuckerberg is one of the richest
men in the world, and even if he were to
give away every penny of his immense
fortune to lepers and orphans, he’d still
captain a vast fleet that carries in its
holds the personal information of bil-
lions of people around the world — yet
allows data pirates such as Cambridge
Analytica to board the ships and loot
the cargo.
I am not urging the committee mem-
bers to be brutal or disrespectful to the
self-effacing young mogul, but they
must extract from him concrete and
significant pledges to rid his hugely lu-
crative platform of the scamming, troll-
ing and deception with which it has
been infested. For too long, Facebook
executives have sought to shield him.
Members of Congress have been re-
markably deferential to Zuckerberg’s
aversion to making no public state-
ments other than occasional inspira-
tional messages on his own terms
about the benevolence of Facebook’s
mission. Now they must press him to
consider changing the site’s business
model, which is driven almost solely by
advertising revenues. Above all, they
must be prepared to hold over his head
the possibility of stringent regulation.
The power to probe lies at the very
heart of congressional responsibilities.
Lawmakers have waited long enough
for Zuckerberg to consent to testify. It
would be a squandered opportunity if
they did not pursue their inquest ag-
gressively.

The Facebook co-founder comes to
Washington amid a drumbeat of con-
cern about how Facebook treats its us-
ers’ very personal information.
The social network found itself ma-
nipulated during the 2016 election sea-
son, with Russian influence attempting
to foment discord among voters. Then
Facebook was forced to admit that tens
of millions of Facebook users’ informa-
tion may have been misused by a con-
sulting firm that assisted the presiden-
tial campaign of Donald Trump. The
outrage that followed has sent Zucker-
berg and his senior staff into crisis
mode, including the CEO’s conceding to
his first-ever testimony to Congress.
Zuckerberg has recently announced
several initiatives to better secure user
information and prevent misuse of the

How I kicked my addiction to news
So far, my experiment
has had a positive effect

I am a recovering addict. For the past
five months, I have quit something al-
most as hard to give up as drinking,
smoking or drugs. I decided to stop read-
ing the news. No newspapers, no online
articles, no television, no Facebook. Cold
turkey, and on Thanksgiving no less.
My thinking was pretty simple: News
is inherently temporary and seems like it
is becoming increasingly hollow. Be-
tween print, radio, television and digital,
news is now recycled repeatedly. A
breaking story can be noteworthy, but by
the end of a news cycle, you can’t help but
feel overwhelmed by meaningless drib-
ble. I figured there was a better use of my
time. And if something important hap-
pened, I figured the news would find me.
Since Thanksgiving, all of my news
has come from friends, colleagues and
family. My wife, Cheryl, told me about
fires and mudslides in Los Angeles, my
neighbor Howard told me about political
misdeeds, my chief financial officer in-
formed me of stock market ups and
downs, my friend Pete alerted me to a
TMZ segment that featured me as the
reincarnation of an arguably better-look-
ing dead serial killer.
There is nothing inherently wrong
with news, and I certainly don’t sub-
scribe to the “it’s all fake” philosophy. Of-
ten, the writing in newspapers is brilliant
and insightful. But news is, by design,
skewed toward the negative.
Negative news catches our attention,
captures our imagination and scares us
into reading more, because negativity
looms larger in the human brain than
positive events. We are controlled by our
emotions, and our emotions are con-
trolled by fear. A tiny almond-shaped
part of our brain called the amygdala
drives all of this. Even though it’s small,
the amygdala can override our decision-
making and is hyper-tuned to negativity.

ica. In an update last week, Facebook
estimated as many as 87 million peo-
ple, mostly in the United States, may
have had their data improperly shared.
Apple CEO Tim Cook started the
unusual public criticism in late March.
During a joint interview with Recode
and MSNBC, he was asked what he
would do about the crisis if he were in
Facebook CEO Mark Zuckerberg’s po-
sition.
“I wouldn’t be in the situation,”
Cook said.
He added that Apple reviews apps
to confirm that each one meets the pri-
vacy standards his company has re-
quired for users.
“We don’t subscribe to the view that
you have to let everybody in that wants
to, or if you don’t, you don’t believe in
free speech,” Cook said. “We don’t be-
lieve that.”
Cook also questioned the practice
of social media platforms monetizing
the personal data of their users.
Zuckerberg hit back in a subse-
quent interview with Vox, calling
Cook’s comments “extremely glib.”
“If you want to build a service which
is not just serving rich people, then
you need to have something that peo-
ple can afford,” Zuckerberg said.
Championing his own company’s
business model, Zuckerberg also said:
“At Facebook, we are squarely in the
camp of the companies that work hard
to charge you less and provide a free
service that everyone can use. I don’t
think at all that that means that we
don’t care about people.”
Zuckerberg is scheduled to testify
before congressional committees in
Washington this week.
For Wozniak, breaking up with
Facebook isn’t easy. He chose not to
delete his Facebook account. He didn’t
mind bidding farewell to his 5,000
Facebook friends, many of whom he
says he doesn’t know. But he didn’t
want to give up his “stevewoz” screen
name.
“I don’t want someone else grab-
bing it, even another Steve Wozniak,”
he said.

Inside the amygdala, a single negative
event makes roughly the same impres-
sion as five positive events.
Our amygdala helped the human race
survive in the wild — remembering a
snake bite is more important than re-
membering a kind word. News exploits
this quirk of human nature by focusing
on negative events. But since we no long-
er live in the wild, negativity causes more
harm than good and makes us more likely
to suffer from depression.
Studies have shown that people who
watch negative news are more likely to be
stressed or anxious. They are also more
likely to think catastrophically about
their personal problems and challenges,
even when those things have nothing to
do with the news. Issues are often por-
trayed in terms of worst-case scenarios
on the news, and once our brains get into
worst-case mode, it’s nearly impossible

leading academics on how to address

settings to make them easier for users
to understand and is toughening ad-
vertising verification methods to pre-
vent societal tampering in political is-
sues, the company said last week.
The social networking giant con-
tinued to take steps to recover from the
scandal that it now thinks could in-
volve the data misuse of as many as 87
million people, mostly in the United
States, when their data was improper-
ly shared by Cambridge Analytica. The
social network said it will begin noti-
fying users Monday if their data was
shared as part of the incident.
Concerns about possible ties to the
British political consulting firm led
Facebook to suspend two more firms
— San Francisco-based research firm
CubeYou and Canadian digital market-
er AggregateIQ — as part of its investi-
gation. Facebook suspended CubeYou
on Sunday after CNBC notified Face-
book the researcher had quizzes on the
platform that collected user data and
shared it with marketers. CubeYou had
been working with the Psychometrics
Lab at Cambridge University, also the
workplace of psychology professor
Aleksandr Kogan, who Facebook said
passed data to Cambridge Analytica.
The data was generated by a per-
sonality app Kogan created, down-
loaded 270,000 times but connected
to more Facebook users who were
friends of those who used the app.

sumption among Americans is

No one should put his or her head in
the sand, unaware of what’s going on in
the world. But you can get a pretty good
idea of what’s happening without news,
partly thanks to friends and family, and
from long-form journalism. Reading a
monthly publication, for instance, is
healthier and just as valuable as staying

properly obtained that data from Kogan.
As part of its investigation, CubeYou
faces an audit by Facebook. “In addi-
tion, we will work with the U.K. (Infor-
mation Commissioner’s office) to ask
the University of Cambridge about the
development of apps in general by its
Psychometrics Centre given this case
and the misuse by Kogan,” Ime Archi-
bong, Facebook’s vice president of
product, saisd in a statement.
CubeYou’s “You Are What You Like”
quizzes had disclaimers similar to the
Kogan-created “This Is Your Digital
Life” app, about the data being used for
academic purposes. Under Facebook’s
settings at the time, the app could gain
access to friends of those who answered
the quiz. CubeYou CEO Federico Treu
told CNBC the app did not gain access to
friends’ information, but only to friends
who opted into the app on their own.
Facebook suspended the other com-
pany, AggregateIQ, based in Victoria,
British Columbia, after whistle-blower
Christopher Wylie said Aggregate IQ
had worked with Cambridge Analytica
parent company Strategic Communica-
tion Laboratories.
“In light of recent reports that Aggre-
gateIQ may be affiliated with SCL and
may, as a result, have improperly re-
ceived FB user data, we have added
them to the list of entities we have sus-
pended from our platform while we in-
vestigate,” Facebook said in a state-
ment. “Our internal review continues,
and we will cooperate fully with any in-

My news hiatus may not last, but my
experiment has had a positive effect so
far. Since dropping the habit, I am more
focused on things that matter. Conversa-

The EU will adopt new data rules
called the General Data Protection Reg-
ulation (GDPR) on May 25. Facebook’s
chief operating officer Sheryl Sandberg
said in January that Facebook’s planned
improvements to user privacy settings
would give the company “a very good
foundation to meet all the require-
ments” of the GDPR.
The U.S. and EU consumer groups
urged Zuckerberg to commit to “global
compliance with the GDPR” when testi-
fying before Congress this week. “These
are protections that all users should be
entitled to no matter where they are lo-
cated,” read the letter, signed by Jeffrey
Chester, executive director of the Center
for Digital Democracy, and Finn Lüt-
zow-Holm Myrstad of the Norwegian
Consumer Council.

The goal for many is quite simple: to
live comfortably throughout retirement.
And 60% to 70% of Americans are on
course to maintain their preretirement
standard of living, according to a just-
published analysis from the Society of
Actuaries’ (SOA) Retirement Section
and Committee on Post Retirement
Needs and Risks.
Those in good shape include workers
who participated in employer-spon-
sored pensions and retirement plans
over the course of a 30-year career. Also,
married-couple household heads aged
55 to 64 — who had combined income of
$105,000 in 2014 and assets of
$250,000 not including their home —
were among those prepared for a com-
fortable retirement, the report said.
People in the lowest-income groups
could also maintain their preretirement
standard of living, with Social Security
replacing a substantial proportion of
preretirement earned income. Based on
Social Security Administration esti-
mates, participants with career average
earnings of roughly less than $21,000
are expected to receive benefits that will
replace 59% to 81% of their preretire-
ment income.
Those who could face the greatest re-
tirement year challenges, according to
the report, include the disabled, wid-
owed, divorced and long-term unem-
ployed. Yet people can take steps now to
make their later years even more enjoy-
able.

on taking Social Security once you retire
but before reaching full retirement age?
For me, full retirement age is 66 years
and 2 months. My position will be elim-
inated when I am 65 and 4 months, so
there is a 10-month shortfall. Would you
recommend my taking Social Security
early or should I use my 401(k) and/or
my after-tax investments to cover the 10
months when there will be no income? I
plan to no longer work after retirement
due to health concerns. — Larry
Dear Larry: You’ve clearly done your
research. Those folks born between
1943 and 1954 are able to retire with full
Social Security retirement benefits
starting at age 66. And for every year af-
ter 1954, those filing simply add two
months to age 66 to determine their full
retirement age until the year 1960 when
full retirement age tops out at 67.
Since you told me your full retire-
ment age is 66 and 2 months, then I
know you were born in 1955. You’re right
that, if you choose to take your Social
Security retirement benefits early, you
will permanently reduce your benefits
under the current rules. If you took the
benefit at age 62, your benefits would be
permanently reduced by about 25%.
But you’re not looking at taking in-
come at 62, you just want your income
10 months early. In that case, I’ve got
good news and bad news. The good
news is there’s a calculation for that.
The bad news is that the calculation
isn’t the easiest math. The percentage
reduction is five-ninths of 1% per month
for the first 36 months and five-twelfths
of 1% for each additional month.
If you were to take the benefit 10
months early, your benefit would be re-
duced by a total of 5.56% based on the
reduction formula. Therefore, if your
benefit at full retirement age is $1,800
per month, taking the benefit 10 months
early would reduce your benefit perma-
nently by $100.08 per month.

the SOA report.
Among the seemingly minor things
to watch: spending on lunches out and
afternoon lattes, says Vickie Bajtelsmit,
co-author of the SOA report and a pro-
fessor in Colorado State University’s
Department of Finance and Real Estate.
Save more
There are also strategic ways to save,
Bajtelsmit says. She suggests putting
half an annual raise into savings, as well
as moving windfalls such as a bonus
into savings as well. “It’s easier to set
aside funds that have never before been
in your budget,” she says.
An early and important goal, Cope-
land says, is to build up emergency sav-
ings. An easy way to build that emer-
gency fund is to have a set amount of
money automatically moved from a
checking account into a savings account
each month, he says.
How much should you save beyond
that emergency fund? “A commonly
recommended number is 10% of in-
come, but that assumes you start when
you are young,” Bajtelsmit says. “Some-
one who begins saving in their 40s will
need to save a much larger percentage.”
One way to evaluate how much to
save by certain ages is to use a multiple
of your salary as a benchmark. Fidelity
Investments suggests having one time
your salary saved for retirement by age
30, three times by age 40, six times by
age 50 and 10 times by age 67.
Pay down debt
In U.S. families where the head of
household is 75 or older, the level of debt
has increased nearly 60% from 31.2% in
2007 to 49.8% in 2016, according to the
Employee Benefit Research Institute.

debt payments that are excessive rela-

need income during those 10 months
(which it sounds like you do) and you
don’t want to take the reduced benefit,
then you will be forced to find $18,000
until you reach 66 and 2 months.
That is, of course, if you truly need
$1,800 per month to survive. Frankly, it
behooves you to find a way to withdraw
less during this time frame. Going by the
latest guidelines on retirement with-
drawals, you should have approximate-
ly $540,000 in retirement assets, which
would then allow you to draw down only
4% (a debatably safe rate of withdrawal
during retirement) of those assets dur-
ing this 10-month period.
If your health concerns are severe
enough that you fear your retirement
will be a short one, then you might con-
sider taking the early benefit and pre-
serving your personal assets for your
heirs. The longer you think you will live,
the better off you will be waiting to take
Social Security. It’s much easier to take
$100.08 per month out of their future in-
heritance each month than it is to take
$1,800 per month for 10 months at the
very beginning of your retirement.
Think of it this way: Taking the bene-
fit when your job is eliminated means
you will only need to supplement your
income with your assets for about
$1,200 a year.
There are several opinions about
when to take Social Security benefits. I
don’t particularly believe in Social Secu-
rity rules of thumb because everyone’s
situation is different. Your decision on
when to take your benefit should be
based on a few different factors: your
health, your spouse’s health, your in-
come sources and your asset levels.
My opinion is you should take your
Social Security benefits early. But ask
five other financial people, and you’ll
likely get five different opinions.

The biggest contributor: housing
debt, he says. Housing represents about
one-third of all expenses for those age
65 and older, according to the Social Se-
curity Administration.
Copeland says the elderly and near
elderly are placing themselves at risk of
running short of money in retirement if
they don’t tackle debt preretirement.
“If they are able to pay off of their
mortgage, they will be rid of the largest
debt source,” he says.
Delay Social Security
For most, age 62 is the earliest you
can claim Social Security benefits. On
exception: A widow or widower can
start receiving Social Security survi-
vor’s benefits at age 60.
Yet if possible, Rappaport says to

til age 70 since the retirement benefits
typically increase when delayed beyond
full retirement age.
For instance, if you were born in 1957
and wait until age 70 to get your full re-
tirement age benefits, you’ll get 128% of
your FRA monthly benefit. The benefit
increase no longer applies when you
reach age 70, the Social Security Ad-
ministration says.
Keep working
Delaying retirement by three to six
months has the same effect on a retire-
ment standard of living as saving an ad-
ditional one-percentage point of earn-
ings for 30 years, says a new study, The
Power of Working Longer.
For primary earners age 62 through
69, the percent increase in retirement
income from working one year longer
and delaying the claim of Social Securi-
ty can be big. A 62-year-old working one
year longer could reap a 6.51% increase,
while a 62-year-old working eight or
more years longer could see an increase
in retirement income of 75%, according
to the Working Longer study.
Find meaning
“Retirement allows people the free-
dom to focus their attention on what
matters most to them,” says Laura Cars-
tensen, a professor at Stanford Univer-
sity. “An approach to life in which people
do something every day that is mean-
ingful and satisfying tends to make peo-
ple happy.”
What can you do to make sure you
have meaning during retirement?
“Each day, spend a few minutes
thinking about the most important peo-
ple in your life — then do something nice
for one of them,” she says. “Or think
about the causes you care most about —
then take one action to contribute posi-
tively.”

Soon your Uber ride could have two
wheels instead of four.
The ride-hailing app company an-
nounced Monday it has reached a deal
to acquire bike-sharing service Jump.
The deal accelerates Uber’s entry
into the rapidly expanding market for
so-called “dockless” bikes, meaning rid-
ers can leave them in any bike rack
when they reach their destinations.
They don’t have to be “docked” in an of-
ficial Jump stand. The bikes remain dis-
abled until the next user unlocks them
by using a code on their smartphone.
Jump had more than 12,000 bicycles
in 40 cities across six countries in 2017.
It is one of a bevy of start-ups from
Washington, D.C., to San Diego offering
electric scooters or bikes, a convenient
way for people to commute between
home and public transit. But they are
controversial because of those services
that, unlike Jump, allow them to be left
behind on street corners or other places
that clutter the cityscape.
Jump recently switched to custom-
designed electric bikes, which make it
easier to get around in hilly cities such
as San Francisco, where Uber has been
testing the service through its app.
Uber declined to provide details on
plans to expand Jump bike-sharing or
pricing plans. For now, the bikes cost
$2 for 30 minutes of use.
Uber CEO Dara Khosrowshahi said
in a blog post the acquisition will help
the company drive toward its goal of
reducing car ownership.
“We’re committed to bringing to-
gether multiple modes of transporta-
tion within the Uber app — so that you
can choose the fastest or most afford-
able way to get where you’re going,
whether that’s in an Uber, on a bike, on
the subway or more,” he said.
Jump CEO Ryan Rzepecki, who in-
corporated the company in 2010 and
launched its first pilot a few years later,
said the company’s brand will live on.
“We will remain good partners to
cities while delivering excellent ser-
vice to our riders,” he said in a blog
post. “Together with Uber, I firmly be-
lieve we can make a more significant
impact on the world.”

weeks of groceries and an additional
10 months of rent for the average wom-
an.
For women of color, the losses go
much deeper. Black women, who earn
63 cents for every dollar earned by a
white man, see a loss of more than
$21,000 a year, says Noreen Farrell, ex-
ecutive director of the organization
Equal Rights Advocates.
Native American women, earning
59 cents on the dollar, experience a
shortfall of $24,000. Latinas, who
bring home 54 cents on the dollar, en-
dure a $26,000 annual shortfall, and
Asian women, with pay averaging 87
cents on the dollar, have a loss of more
than $7,000.
The earnings gap is narrower in
some parts of the U.S. But “there are
wage disparities in every state, every
sector and virtually every occupation,’’
says Deborah Vagins, senior vice
president of public policy and research
for the American Association of Uni-
versity Women.
New York had the slimmest gap, with
the median annual pay for a woman
working full-time amounting to 89% of
that earned by a man — or $47,358 as
compared to $53,124. California was
close behind, with women earning 88
cents for every dollar earned by a male
peer, or $45,489 as compared to $51,417.
The distance between what women
and men make on average was greatest
in Louisiana and Utah. Women in Loui-
siana brought home $34,793 while men
made $50,031. Meanwhile, female
workers in Utah earned a median in-
come of $36,022, while men brought
home $51,099.
There has been change. So far this
year, 38 states have introduced gender
pay-equity bills. The AAUW launched
an initiative to instruct 10 million wom-
en on how to negotiate their salaries by
2022.
“There are lots of levers to make
change ... so I remain optimistic,’’ Va-
gins says.
“The progress has been slow, but
we’re going to keep at it and our goal is to
make Equal Pay Day obsolete.’’

SAN FRANCISCO – YouTube increas-
ingly has been called an inappropriate
video playground for kids, charges that
have caused executives to vow reform.
As the Google-owned platform grap-
ples with the implications from a shoot-
ing last week by a disgruntled YouTube
creator at its San Bruno, Calif., head-
quarters, the company now stands ac-
cused of pocketing billions of dollars by
illegally targeting minors with ads based
on data mined from their devices and
viewing habits.
A consortium of child advocacy
groups filed a complaint with the Federal
Trade Commission, urging the federal
agency to investigate and sanction Goo-
gle for violations of the Children’s Online
Privacy Protection Act. COPPA aims to
safeguard online privacy for those 13 and
younger.
YouTube’s press team said in a state-
ment that it will look at the complaint to
determine if it can improve on how it
protects kids and families. “Because
YouTube is not for children, we’ve in-
vested significantly in the creation of the
YouTube Kids app to offer an alternative
specifically designed for children,” the
statement read.
Child advocates say YouTube is being
disingenuous when it comes to ac-
knowledging just how much influence
the site has over shaping the worldview
of younger viewers, many of whom have
come to regard the platform as a replace-
ment for television. YouTube says you
have to be 13 years or older to use the site,
but critics say it is tacitly allowing vio-
lations of this restriction when it en-
ables content aimed at young children to
flourish.
“For years, Google has abdicated its
responsibility to kids and families by
disingenuously claiming YouTube, a site
rife with popular cartoons, nursery
rhymes and toy ads, is not for children
under 13,” Josh Golin, executive director
of the Campaign for a Commercial-Free
Childhood, said in a statement. “It’s time
for the FTC to hold Google accountable.”

ChuTV Nursery Rhymes and created the
YouTube Kids app.
“YouTube’s privacy policy discloses
that it collects many types of personal
information, including geolocation,
unique device signifiers, mobile tele-
phone numbers ... from children under
the age of 13,” the complaint summary
reads. YouTube does so “without giving
notice or obtaining advanced, verifiable
parental consent as required by COPPA.”
The advocacy groups want the FTC to
levy penalties against Google in the bil-
lions of dollars.

The charges against YouTube come at
a time of growing scrutiny from regula-
tors and consumers about what per-
sonal information technology compa-
nies have collected and profited from in
the past decade as social media use has
skyrocketed.
The child advocacy groups initially
had planned to reveal the complaint last
week but postponed after Nasim Agh-
dam arrived at the company’s head-
quarters on April 3 and opened fire with
a handgun, injuring three employees be-

posts YouTube had been restricting ac-
cess to her videos — an action taken by
the company in the wake of criticism it
does not adequately restrict content
that violates its community guidelines
— which in turn reduced her income
from ads posting alongside those
videos. Police continue to investigate.
Meanwhile, more tough questions
arise about a site that started in 2005 as
a way to share homemade videos but
has grown into an entertainment force.
For all the positive aspects of You-
Tube — it’s not only a repository of ob-
scure how-to videos but essentially acts
as a video log of history — the site con-
tinues to draw negative attention thanks
to some of its users.
Recently, YouTube courted contro-
versy for everything from dangerous
stunts gone tragically wrong (as in the
recent jailing of a woman for accidental-
ly shooting her boyfriend on camera) to
dumb pranks gone horribly viral (cue
eating of Tide Pods laundry detergent).
When it comes to minors in particu-
lar, YouTube has come under pressure
for allowing users to upload videos
aimed at children that sometimes fea-
ture violent and sexual themes.
Last summer, the company took
steps to address the issue, including no
longer allowing creators to make money
from videos that featured the inappro-
priate use of family friendly characters.
In November, YouTube announced
that it would age-restrict such content
in the main YouTube site — when
flagged. But for the most part, algo-
rithms — not humans — do most of the
video policing on the site.
The often ineffectual nature of that
machine-learning approach to gate-
keeping was addressed in December by
YouTube CEO Susan Wojcicki, who an-
nounced that in 2018 it would increase
the number of people working to oversee
content to more than 10,000.
“Human reviewers remain essential
to both removing content and training
machine-learning systems because hu-
man judgment is critical to making con-
textualized decisions on content,” Woj-
cicki said.
But just a month later, YouTube and
its coterie of often millionaire stars were
caught in an unflattering spotlight as Lo-
gan Paul blasted out a video to his fans
of a dead body hanging from a tree in a
Japanese forest known for attracting
those intent on committing suicide. The
public backlash was intense and Paul
apologized, and YouTube later dropped
Paul from its Google Preferred ad pro-
gram.
Child advocacy groups have not been
swayed by YouTube’s efforts to use algo-
rithms, human curators and community
whistleblowers to improve the policing
of its content for minors.
“It’s not until something tragic is
shown via a video, and viewers react,
that the content is removed or dealt with
by the platform,” Jill Murphy, editor in
chief of Common Sense Media, said af-
ter the Logan Paul video incident.
Now Murphy’s group and many oth-
ers want the FTC — which recently
launched an investigation into Face-
book’s role in the Cambridge Analytica
consumer data scandal — to turn off the
ad-dollar tap if YouTube doesn’t stop
targeting children with ads.

Question: I always get a
good review during the annu-
al performance appraisal
process. However, my salary
is low compared to my peers.
How do I ask for a raise?
—Marvin
Answer: Asking your super-
visor for a raise might be the
easy part. The hard part is do-
ing the prep work needed to de-
termine if you deserve a raise.
You’ve made a start with
those good annual perfor-
mance reviews. But you’ll need
to do a little additional home-
work.
First, put yourself in your
employer’s shoes. Before your
boss signs off on a raise, she
needs to consider things that
aren’t tied directly to your per-
formance, such as budgets and
compensation policies.
Start your homework by re-
searching your organization’s
compensation practices. HR
should be able to help you.
Keep in mind, there often are
legitimate reasons for pay dif-
ferences among peers — expe-
rience, performance, educa-
tion, skills and how the salary
was negotiated at the time of
hire.
Next, do market research on
sites such as the Bureau of La-
bor Statistics to evaluate the
fairness of your pay compared
to that in the market.

Earlier in my career, I had a
boss who promised me a big
promotion. He assured me that
he could make it happen and
that, while processing would
take a few weeks, the job was
mine.
That turned out not to be
true for a variety of reasons. A
few weeks later, not only was I
not promoted, he no longer was
with the company.
It was a bitter blow that left
me upset, doubting my future
with the company I then
worked at and not sure what to
do next. My immediate re-
sponse was less than helpful. I
still performed well at work but
was generally sullen and with-
drawn.
I had no interest in proving
myself again to a new boss who
seemed a whole lot less enam-
ored with me than my previous
one was. It was a rough time,
but one that, in retrospect, I
could have handled better.
Here’s a look at what you
should do after a career set-
back.
1. Don’t get hung up on it
It’s reasonable to be upset.
In my case, I had lost a signifi-
cant raise, better benefits and a
major jump in prestige. Being
angry or sad made sense, but
letting it take me out of the fight
did not. The correct response
would have been to vent my an-
ployees who exceed expecta-
tions. Ask yourself: Have I done
anything to differentiate my-
self from my peers? Have I
learned a new skill? Did I take
on additional responsibilities?
If you can answer “yes” to these
questions, you’ll be in a better
position to ask for a raise.
Once you’ve done your
homework, use that informa-
tion to present your case.
Of course, there’s no guar-
antee your employer will im-
mediately reward your efforts.
If you aren’t successful the first
time, ask her what you can do
differently to earn a raise in the
future. Then use her sugges-
tions to help make your case
even stronger the next time.
Q: I’m the oldest member
of my team by a couple of dec-
ades. At what point do the
“old guy” jokes become too
much? I laugh it off, but it’s
making me weary. —Chuck J.
A: OK, be honest: Have you
ever joked about “those Millen-
nials?” Even if you haven’t, I bet
some time in your career you’ve
made or gone along with some
snide comment or generaliza-
tion about someone in the
workplace who is different
from you.
I’m not saying that being the
butt of “old guy jokes” can’t
sting or that it isn’t wrong. I’m
saying that I’m always amazed
at how people will complain
about the very behavior they
engage in.
That said, being mocked or
being called out for being dif-
ferent isn’t funny or appropri-
ate. But because you didn’t say
something to your co-workers
the first time, they may have
gotten the idea that their com-
ments were acceptable to you
and others.
Rather than continuing to
laugh it off or letting the behav-
ior get worse, I suggest using
the next incident as a teachable
moment. Pull your colleague
aside and tell him how the com-
ments really make you feel. Re-

a promotion where I worked
were non-existent.
3. Execute a plan
In my case, my plan involved
aggressively trying to leave the
team I was on, whether it was
for another job at that very
large company or to go else-
where. For many people, a ca-
reer setback can be a lesson —
an opportunity to make some
changes in order to not have the
same disappointment happen
again. If appropriate, talk to
your boss about why you were
passed over. Make a plan to im-
prove and to be ready for the
next opportunity.

If you struggle in Boston,
you better be accountable. If
you lash back or avoid the con-
frontation, good luck earning a
spot back in their hearts.
“The thing I love about grow-
ing up in Boston,” said Los An-
geles Dodgers starter Rich Hill,
who pitched parts of four sea-
sons with the Red Sox, “is that
it’s ingrained in you as a Little
Leaguer the importance of the
Red Sox. And no matter who
you are or how talented you are,
they expect 100% effort and
honesty.
“If you have a bad game,
don’t put it on the weather, the
umpires or other players. And
don’t run and hide after a bad
game. If you stand up, people
appreciate it. If you’re not,
you’re going to be whipped by
the pen.
“Everything in Boston is
magnified, and that’s OK. It’s
what makes Boston great.”
In New York, the media cap-
ital of the world, life as a ball-
player is different. Sure, the
fans can turn on you, too. Just
ask new Yankees DH Giancarlo
Stanton, who was lustily booed
Sunday after striking out five
times for the second time this
season. Still, the players will
tell you, it’s a completely differ-
ent feeling in the two markets.
There’s no sense of commu-
nal ruin in New York when the
Yankees don’t win a World Se-
ries. They’re not chanting, “Red
Sox suck,” in Manhattan during
championship parades. You
can blend into crowds, unless
you happen to be Derek Jeter,
catching a show on Broadway
without even being noticed.
“Both of those cities could be
rough, but I would not go out if I
was struggling in Boston, no
way,” said Johnny Damon, who
played four years with the Red
Sox and four years with the
Yankees, winning a World Se-
ries with each one. “In Boston,
you feel like you’re in every-
body’s living room each night
while they’re having dinner.
You don’t feel that way in New
York.
“I’m just grateful I was able
to play in Boston before New
York. It made it a smooth tran-
sition.”
Los Angeles Angels outfield-
er Chris Young, who spent the
past two years in Boston, was
one of the few who did it in re-
verse, playing two years in New
York before going straight to
Boston.
“It just felt so different,”
Young says. “When things are
going bad and you walk around
town, you’re going to feel it. In
New York, when you lost, it
hurt in the clubhouse, but you
didn’t hear it from the outside
as much. In Boston, when
things went bad, I felt like the
thunderstorms came.
“We won the division two
years in a row when I was there,
and there were times it felt like
we were in last place.”
The expectations in Boston,
even after ending their 86-year
drought in 2004 and winning
three World Series titles in 10
years, are surreal. The Red Sox
won back-to-back AL East ti-
tles, but consecutive division
series exits cost manager John
Farrell his job.
Then again, Joe Girardi had
the Yankees within one game of
the World Series last year, and
he was gone, too, with each
team hiring rookie managers,
Aaron Boone in New York and
Alex Cora in Boston, as their re-
placements.
“It didn’t seem weird or dif-
ferent when I was there,” said
Milwaukee Brewers third base-
man Travis Shaw, who spent
the first eight years of his career
in the Red Sox organization,
“but now that I’m on the other
side of it, there’s a huge differ-
ence. I can see how guys that
come there are shocked.
“Boston is just a very reac-
tionary media market. Ex-
tremely reactionary. You got to
be really careful there, and if
you’re on social media, you bet-
ter be careful what you search
for.”
It’s why Price, who along
with his dog, Astro, used to be
one of baseball’s most active
players on social media, has al-
most abandoned it. He has
been sensational in his first two
starts, pitching 14 scoreless in-
nings, but has yet to tweet
since the season started.
“It’s tough, but that’s OK,”
Price says. “In Boston, they
expect to win. It’s the only
place where the fans’ expec-
tations to perform are almost
higher than the players.’ ”
And when they don’t,
they’ll certainly hear or read
about it.
“We call it the Boston base-
ball experience,” Boston Globe
columnist Dan Shaughnessy
says. “It’s not for everybody.
We’re into extremes here.
There’s more drama. If you’re
going to be thin-skinned or
pay attention to social media,
it can devour you.
“In New York, they’re
knowledgeable, they’re steep
in tradition and they’re bigger.
It’s just not as personal there.”
Now with the Red Sox (8-1)
jumping out to their finest
start in franchise history, al-
ready leading the Yankees by
31⁄2 games, the folks in Boston
can’t help but feel giddy.
Who knows, maybe Red
Sox fans will find that there’s
no real reason to boo Stanton
themselves this week consid-
ering the Yankees fans al-
ready took care of it in his first
homestand, booing louder
and louder in each of his sev-
en hitless at-bats Sunday,
dropping his batting average
to .167.
“People get freaked out
when they first get here,” Yan-
kees veteran starter CC Sa-
bathia says, “but once you’re
here, you find out New York is
an easy place to play.”
Perhaps Stanton will be
able to echo the same senti-
ments one day playing for the
Yankees, but for now, Boston
might be the refuge he needs
just being away from the cat-
calls and back-page headlines
in New York.
“I remember being terrified
when I was with the Yankees
going to Boston for the first
time,” Toronto Blue Jays out-
fielder Curtis Granderson
said. “I was thinking, ‘Oh,
God, here we go.’ But I didn’t
feel like there was a lot of hate.
The fans didn’t do anything
crazy.
“It’s like Jeter used to tell
us, once the Red Sox won in
’04, things calmed down a lit-
tle bit, at least from the visit-
ing side.
“So I think it should be OK
for (Stanton) too. It should be
neutral for him.”
And if Stanton happened
to be getting off to this kind of
start playing for Boston and
the Red Sox were the ones
looking up at the Yankees in
the standings?
“Let’s just say it would
be interesting,” Granderson
says, “and probably not in
such a good way.”

AUGUSTA, Ga. – If there’s any conso-

lation to be had in coming oh, so aching-
ly close to a green jacket, it’s that Rickie
Fowler knows his time is coming.
It could be at Shinnecock, one of his
favorite courses. Or it might come at
Carnoustie or Bellerive. Maybe it will be
right here next year.
At some point, though, Fowler will be
a major champion.
“I am ready to go win a major, but this
was kind of the first major week that I
understood that and knew that and felt
that,” he said Sunday night, after finish-
ing a stroke behind Patrick Reed in the
Masters. “I would say previously I was
still feeling the nerves and dealing with
tough rounds and things not going your
way.
“The big round for me was (Satur-
day). I didn’t feel my best. I felt like I had
to really stick to my game plan and fight
through a few times where I may not
have felt comfortable and just try to gut
it out,” he continued. “Obviously with a
65, I was very pleased with that. So I’m
ready to go.”
There has never been a question of
Fowler’s talent. He has four PGA Tour
victories, including the so-called “fifth
major,” The Players Championship, in
2015.
Now 29, he’s been considered one of
the Next Big Things in Golf for so long

What my real job is like: At Christ the King, I’m the bottle washer. I clean the floor.
I teach chemistry. I’m the athletic director, along with the boys coach, Joe Arbitel-
lo. I drive the bus. I also teach honors chemistry and direct a research program for
science research, which is always fun.
CTK tradition: Tina (Charles), Carrem Gay and 11 or 12 former players came back
when we played for the Brooklyn-Queens title this season. The whole crew hung
out like they had never left. It was great for my kids to see that camaraderie going

Chip and Joanna Gaines have in-
stalled the last bit of shiplap on their
final Fixer Upper.
The HGTV power couple said good-
bye to the series that put them on the
map last week, with a finale that left
fans emotional and reeling. But the
burgeoning Gaines empire can’t be
contained by a single HGTV show.

Adaptive fashions make style easier

When Roxanne Hoke-Chandler’s 19-
year-old daughter was growing up, she
wanted to wear jeans like her peers. But
having Down syndrome made finding
denim that fit a frustrating challenge.
Luckily, Hoke-Chandler found a spe-
cialized company that made jeans for
young people with Down syndrome.
“I thought it was the greatest thing in
the world,” she says. “But the thing is, I
found them because I was at a Down
syndrome conference.”
Retailers and designers such as
Target and Tommy Hilfiger, which
launched a new adaptive clothing line at
the end of March, want to bring these
options to the mainstream by balancing
fashion with function and offering
clothes that adapt to the wearer.
Enter adaptive apparel: Clothing
designed specifically for people with
disabilities who find it difficult to dress
independently or those with sensory is-
sues who are sensitive to certain tex-
tures and materials. More than 40 mil-
lion people in the U.S. have a disability,
and more than 14 million of them have
difficulties with daily living activities
such as dressing, according to a 2016
U.S. Census Bureau report.
Adaptive items use different features
such as Velcro closures and magnetic
buttons to make dressing easier, while
still having the outward appearance of
typical clothing. Other tweaks include
using flat seams and tagless options to
allow more comfort on the skin.
Stacy Bingle, a senior consumer
trends analyst at Mintel, says adaptive
apparel is a growing market, with its
breakout into mainstream retailers part
of a larger shift toward inclusivity.
“It’s part of an overall trend that
we’re seeing, with consumers who have
been underrepresented in the past are
really getting a greater voice,” she says.

“The great thing is that through the
years, not to be punny, but they are still
the same. They still fit into the fabric of
any radio station.”
It was early March, and Nettles and
Bush are holed up in a Nashville re-
hearsal space. In two days, the two will
leave to play shows in Europe. In 24
hours, Bush has to start mixing the al-
bum. The sense of urgency is palpable.
But when Nettles and Bush sink into
couches on their lunch break, they bub-
ble with excitement over the reunion
and the music they’ve created.
“We giggle all the time,” Bush says,
recalling an offhand comment he had
made. “I was just joking …”
“I wasn’t,” Nettles fires back, not
needing further explanation. “I thought
it was hilarious.”
“I said, ‘You know, we have a lot of
friends who are going to be pretty upset
with us,’ ” Bush recalls. “We just skipped
bro country.”
“It worked out great for me as a wom-
an,” Nettles says, breaking into James
Brown’s It’s a Man’s Man’s Man’s World.
The two are very much still the same.
The chemistry is there. Their trust in
each other is intact. Their creative vi-
sion is in lockstep. But their situations
are different. Nettles is now a mother
with three solo albums and two Dolly
Parton television specials to her credit.
Bush is a single dad, an in-demand
country music producer and a songwrit-
er with a musical and solo project under
his belt. The country genre has shifted,
and gun violence and sexual assault
scandals have rocked the nation.
The differences drive Sugarland’s
comeback. They didn’t understand it
when they re-emerged together for the
first time, shocking the audience at the
CMA Awards in November. They do now.
“I think there’s something with
Sugarland that is a higher calling,”
Nettles says. “What we’ve been writing
for this new record, it is clear we had
things inside of us that we felt the world
needed to hear.”
Nettles and Bush didn’t jump into the
reunion with both feet. They had a date
— a songwriting date, to see if they
could still work together. Bush flew to
New York City at the end of August and
met Nettles in a rehearsal room. He set
his suitcase in the corner, not bothering
to check into a hotel. They hadn’t writ-
ten a song together in seven years. They

their initial October launch, features
clothes for children and adults of differ-
ing physical abilities, including those
with prostheses or braces.
The line exists thanks in part to the
non-profit Runway of Dreams, which
collaborated with Hilfiger on ways to
best make the clothes adaptive. Some
features include one-handed zippers,
adjustable pant hems and MagnaReady
brand faux buttons, which give the ap-
pearance of real buttons with the ease of
a magnetic closure.

shirts became popular through social
media and now the company sells its
garments at several major retailers.
In early February, Target released its

started, and it felt like riding a bike.
“It was fun,” Bush recalls of the ses-
sion in which they sketched out Still the
Same. “It was like, ‘Oh, yeah, we grab
things quick.’ We grab them out of the
air, and they bounce real easy.”
They scheduled another writing ses-
sion for two weeks out. Days before,
Nettles called Bush with a change of
plans. Instead of writing again, she
wanted to record the song. Bush scram-
bled to get a band to New York City.
When he pushed the recording button
three days later, Sugarland knocked out
two songs — Still the Same and On a
Roll, another song the two started dur-
ing the first songwriting session.
Nettles played Bush’s work tapes of
the songs for Big Machine Label Group
founder and CEO Scott Borchetta while
they were in Canada. His reaction was
instant — he thought the songs were
“smash” hits.
Sugarland didn’t write together again
until after the holidays. Again, Bush
flew to New York City and met Nettles in
the same rehearsal room. With two
four-day sessions of collaboration, they
finished the album.
While flying to one of the writing ses-
sions in February, Bush heard about a
school shooting and thought of his chil-
dren. He asked himself what his kids
feared and how to address it.
By the time he got off the plane, he
had a few lines written down. When he
showed it to Nettles, they started to
explore the idea. She asked for 45 min-
utes alone with his notes at the piano.
He eagerly agreed.

Zappos.com also launched an adap-
tive line last year, which includes cloth-
ing such as pull-on pants and orthope-
dic-friendly and easy on/off shoes for
kids and adults.

“This is not about whether you
should have a gun or not,” he says. “It’s
about, ‘What do you tell a kid?’ It’s a
whole different conversation.”
Sugarland recorded the final nine
songs for the album in three days at the
end of February. There are messages
about empowerment. Invitations to rise
above the chaos. Insight into what it’s
like to be an American in 2018 and of-
ferings about tragedy and brokenness.
“I think we have the wonderful abil-
ity to invite questions rather than
point fingers,” Nettles says.
Not all the songs are heavy. Nettles
says many of the tracks are fun, and
Bush says the collection is packed with
“serious grooves.” The two will embark
on their first arena tour in five years in
May. They had to have songs that
spoke to fans’ hearts and pulled people
out of their seats.
“I’m sitting with it, and now I get it,”
Bush says. “This was never about us.
It’s about what happens when (Sugar-
land) sits down and makes stuff. And
when we sit down and make stuff, it’s
about you. ... That’s why we go play it in
front of people — because it’s theirs.”
Sugarland will make no promises
about the future. Nettles and Bush want
to see how the new music resonates.
“What we have done for our fans, I
hope, is show them they can trust
there are times when we will come
apart, and there are times when we
will come back together,” Nettles says.
“I love that we have done exactly what
we said we were going to do. We took
time and … we came back.”

Forthofer, CEO and president of Easter
Seals DuPage and Fox Valley. She is also
the mother of two children with myo-
tonic muscular dystrophy and autism.
“It allows our kids to wear clothing
they see their peers wearing. My boys
wanted to wear jeans, but physically we
struggled to find jeans,” she says. “They
were either too big and then they would
fall down or they ended up wearing a lot
of sweatpants. As they get older, there’s
more interest in order to dress in more
typical clothing that they would see
their friends and their peers wearing.”
Uniform requirements at school and
work often turn a desire to dress like
your peers into a necessity, Forthofer
says. She was grateful for the dressier
Tommy Adaptive line when her son
started an internship.
“He’s able to wear a work uniform
that looks just like any other pair of
khaki pants, but he’s able to be com-
pletely independent,” she says. “And he
wouldn’t have been able to do that in-
ternship or take that job if, it seems silly,
but truly if it wasn’t for his ability to find
adaptive pants that matched what a
typical person would wear.”
Despite the options available, For-
thofer says there is “without a doubt” a
need for more adaptive apparel options.
“There are more options available for
families with younger kids, but as they
age or get bigger it becomes a little more
challenging,” Forthofer says.
Hoke-Chandler has a warning for
companies interested in pursuing
adaptive options: “This clothing should
really not cost more. ... There’s a market
for it.”

or the music industry may be just like
us in some ways, but there is unques-
tionable distance from their fans, no
matter how relatable they may appear.
The Gaineses are not like that. They
are just a couple from Texas with a
family to take care of and a business to
run. There are no movie premieres, lo-
cation shoots or sold-out concert are-
nas. And while this is true of many
HGTV couples and personalities, their
setting in Waco, Texas, helps them re-
late to Middle America more than
shows such as Flip or Flop, set in prici-
er cities. And although there have been
rumors about their relationship
(which Chip told the Today show had
“some credence”), their seemingly
happy marriage is more endearing
than Flip’s tabloid-frequenting Tarek
and Christina El Moussa, too.
Their lighthearted banter is more
natural than the likes of the identical-
twin Property Brothers or Hilary Farr
and David Visentin on Love it or List It.
They work together seamlessly, easily
fixing “problems” that arise in their
“renos.” Their sweet outings and DIY
projects with their TV-adorable chil-
dren are aspirational. They’re always
teaching and learning and spending
the kind of quality time with their fam-
ily that you wish you could.
Fixer Upper may be done, but Chip
and Joanna aren’t going anywhere.
And expect every new home and de-
sign show to try to capture just a little
bit of that Gaines magic.

‘Quiet Place’ questions shout for answers

A Quiet Place silently scared the liv-

ing heck out of me.
Director, star and co-writer John
Krasinski’s silent thriller places his
screen family, including real-life wife
Emily Blunt, in a future where aliens are
alerted to the slightest sound with in-
stant, lethal results.
I stoically stifled cries of pure fear in
the theater. But I also wanted to yell
some big questions at the screen on a
few critical issues. That would have
alerted the aliens to my presence,
however.
So I’m asking now.

How could you leave your kids

unattended like that?

Oldest sibling Regan Abbott (the

heartbreakingly effective Millicent
Simmonds) is consumed by guilt after
giving her youngest brother, Beau (Cade
Woodward), a rocket ship. Beau flips it
on and it’s alien liftoff time.
But Beau is already a dead kid walk-
ing. Earlier, we saw him climb precari-
ously to grab the toy from a high store
shelf (dumb), nearly topple (so dead)
and then drop it (sis caught it).
Mom and Dad, you got things going
on. I get it. But in this world, you’ve got
to mind the kid.
Why didn’t they
soundproof the house?
The family can talk by a loud water-
fall that drowns out their words and in
a room in the barn with a mattress
pulled over the opening. If this is effec-
tive, let’s replicate it. Soundproof the
house and the family could record heavy
metal albums.
You’re having a baby?
You’re kidding, right?
Boy, it’s a big shocker to see that

Between childbirth and exposed nails,
Emily Blunt’s Evelyn suffers unduly.
Blunt’s Evelyn is highly preggers. It’s
Day 424 of the alien invasion, so clearly
the couple managed some enviable qui-
et time away from the kiddos. Fair
enough. But birth control, people! Ba-
bies are a death sentence in this world.
Putting on the infant oxygen mask and
placing the child in a soundproof coffin
(something from Dystopic Parenting
magazine?) will buy a couple days, max.
No one thought of
weaponizing noise?
We see from newspaper clippings
pinned to the wall (print media outlasts
the Internet!) that the government knew
about these aliens and their lethal, high-
ly sensitive hearing.
If I were a national security adviser or
a police chief, I might think of trying to
exploit this: high-pitched sonic weap-
ons, Mariah Carey’s Emotions played
full blast, the Walmart yodeling kid.
But only Regan, who is deaf, figures
out that aliens can’t deal with reverb
from her hearing aid. That’s a pretty big
Achilles heel for an alpha alien.
Isn’t silent childbirth
enough to suffer?
For dramatic effect, we want Evelyn
to endure extreme hardship without
making a sound as the alien prowls
nearby. Even speaking as someone who
has not and will not give birth, isn’t la-
bor without drugs more than enough for
her to silently (and miraculously) suf-
fer? There has to be a nail somehow
sticking up on the stairs to be trod upon
with bare feet? That’s a pain too far.

❚ Prosecutor says in opening
statement that Cosby paid nearly
$3.4 million.
After hours of lawyers huddling
behind closed doors and a brief flurry
of attention for a topless protester, the
Bill Cosby retrial began with opening
statements Monday afternoon, includ-
ing the acknowledgment that the actor
and comedian paid his accuser nearly
$3.4 million in a confidential settlement
a dozen years ago.
District Attorney Kevin Steele high-
lighted the amount during his opening
statement in the retrial of Cosby on three
counts of aggravated indecent sexual
assault of Andrea Constand at his sub-
urban Philadelphia home in 2004.
Constand, a former Temple Univer-
sity basketball manager, says Cosby
drugged and molested her. Cosby says
their encounter was consensual.
Under their 2006 settlement of a civil
suit, the amount paid has been secret,
including at Cosby’s first trial last sum-
mer, which ended in a hung jury. This
time, both sides are allowed to discuss it.

former Cosby Show actress.
The proceedings got off to a memora-
ble start as a topless protester with the
phrase “Women’s Lives Matter” written
in red across her torso jumped a barri-
cade and tried to ambush the comedian
as he entered the courthouse.
The woman was identified by the dis-
trict attorney’s office as Nicolle Ro-
chelle, 39, of Little Falls, N.J. She’s an ac-
tress who made multiple appearances
on The Cosby Show between 1990 and
1992, according to IMDb.
Rochelle got within a few feet of Cos-
by before sheriff ’s deputies intercepted
her. She was charged with disorderly
conduct and released.

uncomfortable because that is exactly
what he has been doing for decades to
women and to show him that the body
can be aggressive and empowered,”
Rochelle told reporters afterward.
❚ Judge investigates claim about
juror’s impartiality.
Before opening statements, Judge
Steven O’Neill questioned a woman
from last week’s jury selection who stat-
ed in an affidavit that one of the jurors
told her he believes Cosby is guilty.
O’Neill, Cosby’s defense team and
prosecutors spent the morning and
most of the afternoon behind closed
doors discussing how to proceed.
❚ Retrial unfolds in a new era.
Opening statements come as all sides
hope to avoid a rerun of the first trial.
A new jury consisting of seven men
and five women chosen from within
Montgomery County, 10 of them white
and two black, will be sequestered dur-
ing the retrial. Out of dozens of accusa-
tions against Cosby, the 2015 criminal
charges from the Constand case are the
only ones to stick. The others are all too
old to prosecute.
Aside from the jury and Cosby’s new
legal team (led by Thomas Mesereau),
the biggest change is what has
happened outside the courtroom: the
Me Too movement, which has called out
sexual harassment and assault.

‘André’ lived large, in and out of ring

André Roussimoff has left a giant
legacy.
Better known by his wrestling name,
André the Giant, his life is examined in a
new HBO documentary, André the Giant
(Tuesday, 10 ET/PT). André had a prolif-
ic career in professional wrestling and
came to be known for his size, caused by
acromegaly, sometimes called gigan-
tism, which made his limbs and organs
grow too large. Andre went on to a role in
1987’s The Princess Bride and helped
move wrestling from its low-tech re-
gional TV days to the supercharged
Hulk Hogan era. He died in 1993.
The revealing, fast-paced documen-
tary includes interviews with his family,
friends and fellow wrestlers, including
Hulk Hogan, Jerry Lawler and Arnold
Schwarzenegger. We rounded up five of
the biggest things we learned.
He wasn’t always called
“André the Giant.”
André started wrestling in France as
a young adult, and his first persona was
“Jean Ferre,” a lumberjack character. Af-
ter he came to North America, the name
was dropped because it sounded too
much like “fairy.” He was first called An-
dré the Giant at a match in Chicago in
the 1970s.
André decided how his opponents
fared in the ring.
André spent much of his professional
wrestling career as a hero and undefeat-
ed champion, but even in victory he had
the power in the ring to make his oppo-
nents look good or bad. The documen-
tary highlights his disdain for wrestlers

“Macho Man,” whose time in the ring
was less than pleasant.

until later in his life.

André, and while director Rob Reiner
“didn’t understand a single word he
said” during his audition, André landed
the role anyway. Reiner says filmmakers
had to be creative: André was too heavy
to ride a horse, so he had to be supported
by wires.
Reiner and cast members Billy Crys-
tal, Robin Wright and Cary Elwes recall
that André was in pain during the pro-
duction. He struggled during his fight
scene with Elwes early in the film, and
he couldn’t catch Wright during a scene
in which she jumps into his arms toward
the end. She had to be suspended from
wires so he wasn’t carrying her weight.
His famous match with Hulk
Hogan at Wrestlemania III was
built around his body’s limitations.
When André fought in Wrestlemania
III in 1987, the year The Princess Bride
actually hit theaters, he was still not in
great shape. He had had back surgery,
and his fight with Hogan was choreo-
graphed around his limitations. André
does very little in the fight, and Hogan
has most of the physical activity.
Hogan says in the documentary that
André refused to decide how to finish
the match ahead of time and that he
called out the final move, a body slam,
as they were wrestling.
