Robert Frost’s The Road Not Taken

Stanza 4:

I shall be telling this with a sigh

Somewhere ages and ages hence

Two roads diverged in a wood, and I

I took the one less traveled by,

And that has made all the difference

A. Intepretation

I intepret the stanza as the person has made a decision about which road he should
choose between the two. I shall be telling this with a sigh I interpret as a this person is
sighing which means the person was having difficulties in choosing between the two roads,
or he even probably regrets her decision by “sighing” when he remembers and tells about the
choice he has made. The line 4, I took the one less traveled by, I interpret as this person
choose the less popular choice or an option that people rarely choose. The last line, And that
has made all the difference means that the choice he chose has made difference in their life
wether it’s good difference or bad difference.

B. Figurative Language

Metaphor

1. “Two roads” here is a metaphor for choice,

And therefore,

2.“…the one less traveled by” is a metaphor for the unpopular choice.
