Lap Joint Subject To Bending and Shear
This is a lap joint with an offset. I could not find a calculation for this in any reference so I put this together.
Ihave assumed that there will be a vertical shear force caused by the offset load creating a moment about
the mid point between the welds (marked with the red dot), as well as a horizontal shear force.
Weld Throat = a1
Horizontal Shear Stress =
W(aq+aa)
Vertical Shear Stress Caused by Offset e1 and e2
Consider Moments about pivot point

To Simplify this example lets assume ay = a2

‘Therefore Vertical Shear Stress= t =
‘Consider the Horizontal and Vertical Shear Stresses as Vectors and summate using the
circular function to deturmine the maximum siress.
Horizontal + Vertical
The resultant stress can then be evaluated using the ITW formula splitting the resultant stress
into direct stress and shear stress in exactly the same as the fillet weld example.

Alternative approach it gives the same answer as my method. My thanks to the person that sent this
tome.
