Ihave assumed that there will be a vertical shear force caused by the offset load creating a moment about the mid point between the welds (marked with the red dot), as well as a horizontal shear force. Weld Throat = a1 Horizontal Shear Stress = W(aq+aa) Vertical Shear Stress Caused by Offset e1 and e2 Consider Moments about pivot point @er)+ Bes) = Waa bow. ak e=eter To Simplify this example lets assume ay = a2 Pe WaL ‘Therefore Vertical Shear Stress= t = ‘Consider the Horizontal and Vertical Shear Stresses as Vectors and summate using the circular function to deturmine the maximum siress. Horizontal + Vertical The resultant stress can then be evaluated using the ITW formula splitting the resultant stress into direct stress and shear stress in exactly the same as the fillet weld example. Resultant On = Resultant and L=OL= Gn [a Alternative approach it gives the same answer as my method.
