Self-weight refers to the own weight of body, due to the mass present in it.
The load exerted due to the self weight is the permanent load on the
structure. It does not gets changed or altered until there is any modification,
done to the body like change in its cross section or changes to the material.
The load exerted by the self weight is also called dead load. There are various
types of loads like live load, wind load, fluid load, snow load and earthquake
load.
The self weight is a major factor while determining the load for designing any
structure. During the construction stage of the building, formwork is placed to
support the beams, columns and slabs, until it becomes hard enough to
support the self-weight of the elements.
Quick removal of the formwork will lead to the self-buckling of columns, under
its own weight.
Formula for the self-weight is calculated as below.

Here, the term ρ is the density of the material, B is the breadth, and D is the
depth.
Consider a beam of 400 mm length and 200 mm width. The density of the
concrete is 24KN/m3. The self-weight of the beam is calculated as done
below, and expressed in terms of loading per meter length of beam.
