year, thanks to the never before seen pairing of Imran Khan and Katrina Kaif. Besides
it also stars Ali Zafar who made an impressive debut with ‘ere Bin Laden’ last year.
However, it turns out that there’s more in store for the audiences as makers might
just have packed in a big surprise. If the buzz is to be believed, then there’s another
big star who features in this film and he is none other than the hunky John Abraham.
John plays a cameo in the film.

hah Rukh Khan’s most ambitious project, the science fiction ‘Ra.One’
(Random Access One) is undoubtedly one of the most-anticipated releases
of the year. Directed by Anubhav Sinha, written by David Benullo and co-
starring Kareena Kapoor and Arjun Rampal, the film is also said to be the most
expensive venture in Indian cinema after ‘Blue’ (budgeted at $43 million, apart
from the marketing budgets which is estimated at $ 100 million). This is Shah
Rukh’s first attempt in the sci-fi genre and he has left no stone unturned to give the
film. Shah Rukh has also written the screenplay of the film. The music for the film
has been composed by the duo of Vishal and Shekhar. International pop singer
(American rapper) Akon
has lent his voice for the
film.

Synopsis:
The film tells the story of a Miami based software engineer named Shekhar
(played by Shahrukh Khan), who as a video-game hero fights off a self-created
monster ‘Ra One’ in his video game. Shah Rukh Khan’s character in the ‘Ra.One’
story is known as G.One which stands for Good One. The story later goes to a
point where Shah Rukh falls for Kareena Kapoor, the mother of an 8-year old
child, whom he starts imagining as one of the characters. The film has been made
keeping in mind the interest of kids and families and is said to have been shot in
contemporary London.

ou have an interesting
array of woman centric
films with well-defined
roles for you in the year.
Are you happy about the way your
career is going?
I consider myself lucky to be getting
such good roles. It’s very encouraging
that people are writing roles with me
in mind. Also cinema is undergoing a
rapid change and the audience is ready
to accept such movies. Coming back to
the question, I do have an interesting
array of movies lined ahead, each with
a totally diverse look and role. In Dirty
Pictures, I will be wearing stilettos and
doing sexy numbers. On the other hand,
you will see me as a pregnant woman in
Kahani, which is about the journey of a
mother. In another film Urmi, I will be
doing a bit of belly dancing and sword
fighting too.
Your role in Dirty Picture is said to
be based on the life of Silk Smitha.
How are you preparing for the
role?
I am learning a lot about Silk Smitha’s
life. Initially, I found the character quite
offensive but as I studied the character,
I learnt that there were many more
nuances to it that gave her a distinct
persona of her own. Now I am finding
my role more and more exciting. The
best part about her personality was her
incredible body language. Frankly, the
character is very exciting and one that is
equally challenging too.
What is Sujoy Ghosh’s Kahani all
about?
It is the journey of a pregnant woman
who comes to Kolkata in search of her
husband. I will be sporting a baby bump
in the film. In fact I had to learn to walk
like a pregnant woman. We have also
used a lot of prosthetics in the film. But
I also used it as an excuse for people not
to smoke near me. (Laughs)
We are told that you had to put on
weight for both the roles.
It is true that both the films required
me to put on weight. But I felt
that since I already
had a well-
endowed
body, there was no
n e e d to go through any particular
regimen. Besides, it becomes difficult to

shed all that weight later.
How do you go generally go about
preparing for your character? Do
you go through workshops before
the shoot begins?
I don’t go through workshops neither
am I a switch-on, switch-off artist. But
yes, I do insist on the directors giving
me a lot of inputs to get into the feel of
the character. I am the kind of actor
who puts her directors through a lot of
torture to get the details right. Once I am
excited with a role, I am ready to go to
any lengths to justify it on screen.
What is that you are looking
forward to doing besides these
films? Is there any role that you
are planning to experiment with?
Yes, I want to do a completely romantic
movie where I can sing and dance with
Shah Rukh Khan. Apart from that, I
would love to do a whacky comedy some
day. I have yet to get an opportunity
to explore that genre. I am constantly
looking at doing something different to
keep myself inspired as an actor. In fact,
I look forward to doing something new
every day when I get up in the morning.
I want that excitement when I go on the
sets or else life gets very boring.

my career, I would hesitate doing bold
scenes wondering what my parents or
friends would think of it. But I realized
that once the camera is switched on, the
actor in me comes to the fore and I am
a completely different person. Besides,
both my parents and friends have no
inhibitions about my movies and roles.
They have all been supportive and it

R D Burman was popularly known as
Panchamda . He was comfortable with
all types of music, be it the romantic
songs or the cabaret number Piya tu
ab toh aaja from Caravan (1971), the
ultimate hippie anthem Dum Maro Dun
from Hare Rama Hare Krishna (1972)
or the classical numbers. At times, RD
doubled up as a singer too. His most
famous song as a singer was Mehbooba
from Sholay. Panchamda was a very
creative person. His percussion also
included a spoon against a glass (Chura
liya hai from Yaadon Ki Baarat).
RD Burman’s first hit movie was
Teesri Manzil (1966). The songs “O
haseena” and “Aaja aaja” belonged to
a genre that Indian music lovers were
unaware of. Four of the songs from
this movie were duets by Ashaji with

popular composer in 1970s, famous

In the case of Bachchan’s horoscope
it is his amazing constellation that has
propelled him to such dizzying heights
of success. To start with Jupiter is in its
own constellation “Punarvasu” which has

contacts with the masses, the 2nd house
for wealth creations and the 10th house

which is the luckiest star for anyone to
have in his horoscope for a rising planet.
Also note that the Sun too is placed in the
same constellation in his Birth Chart.
In 1982 he suffered an injury while

music for Ijaazat which included songs

and Ashaji, came together in 1987,
to create a double album, titled, Dil
Padosi Hai, which was released on 8
September 1987, Ashaji birthday
After his death, in the mid 1990s,
the remix versions of R D Burman’s
hits ruled the Indian music scene.
Even today, most of the Indian remix
songs are his tunes remixed. In, 1995,
Filmfare Awards, constituted a new
award in the memory of R D Burman,

shooting for a film ‘Coolie’ and his injury
became cause for anxiety and sorrow for
his fans and the entire nation. Note that
he was running the period of the Moon
at that time which represents the 6th and
8th house, denoting injury and ill health.
The Moon in his horoscope is placed in the
Constellation Swati, owned by Rahu – The
Southern Node of the Moon or the Dragons
Tail, which causes Lunar Eclipse.
Till 1987 he suffered adversities of
all kinds including monetary, due to evil
planetary influences. From 1989 onwards
he once again entered into the influence
of the planet Mercury and regained his
prominence and the status of being a
superstar. We have discussed already
that Mercury is placed in the fortunate
star of Spica. We have seen him ruling
the roost for the last 20 years as one of
the most sought after actors on the silver
Screen. He has also received acclaim as
an impressive host on the talk Show KBC,
which has millions of people all over the
country glued to their television sets.
From the above, it is evident that four
planets placed in the evil 8th house could
not be a deterrent for him in achieving
his goals, simply because two of them
were placed in the constellation “Chitra”
which gave him access to the glories he
sought. Also, his Mercury is combusted
and retrograde but this did not prevent
the combination from producing a “Budhi
Aditya Yoga” par excellence. He is well
known for his oratorical abilities in public,
besides his unique style of dialogue
delivery. We wish him all the best for

movies of this “ageless superstar”.

contestant matching their steps with
superstar Hrithik Roshan, while ace
choreographers Farah Khan and
Vaibhavi Merhant judge the show.
The international auditions for
the show will begin n Feb 27, as the
“Just Dance” team will set out to scout
talent in Britain and the US, besides
covering the major metros and other
cities across India.

To be honest, it is
disheartening when all the hard work
does not pay off. In fact, I had never
worked so hard on any role as this
one. I had to use prosthetics which
would take me 5-6 hours to put on and
another 5 hours to remove. Sincece my
character spanned from the
age of 20 to 65 years, it was
a tough challenge. It was a
complicated character and any
amount of homework would
not have helped. The more I did
the less it seemed.
Do you think it is a risky ky
proposition taking up
unconventional roles which ich
may not necessarily meet the
commercial parameters at the
box-office?
I don’t think so. I don’t look at the
he box-
office when it comes to making a choice
of roles. It is the creative urge in me
as an actor that keeps compelling me
to take up different films with diverse
roles. If you look at my career graph, I
have been experimenting with different
roles right from ‘Drona’. If ‘Fashion’
was ultra glamourous, ‘Kaminey’ was
a simple film, then again ‘Dostana’
was glamorous. I have learnt to take
the responsibility on my shoulders

with female- oriented subjects. In fact
Fashion gave me the courage to pick
films which have great stories. I have
grown as an actress with these roles
and they have helped me realize my
potential to the fore. Since the last two
years, I have started understanding my

working with. Vishal Bharadwaj is one
of them.
Apart from working with seven
different actors of various ages,
there were quite a few intimate
scenes in ‘Saat Khoon Maaf’. How
comfortable were you shooting

I have never known of any marriage
without intimacy. And I think if you
want to show love and pain, it comes
with a lot of other emotions. There is
never aan isolated emotion of love or
hatred or anger or intimacy. When a
particular scene is being depicted, I

and it challenges me.

miss being out with friends.
If you mean Bollywood friends, then
let me tell you that I have no friends
here. I don’t meet anyone or socialise
as I don’t belong to this place. I rarely
meet my contemporaries at a party or
on the sets. I talk and enjoy myself
with most of the actresses. Actually you
can’t be friendly to all. Friendship is
possible only with a handful of people
who are ready to help you in your hour
of need.
From being known as one of the

off by the whole development?
I am not disappointed. On the
contrary, I feel flattered that I am
one of the celebrities who has had the
privilege of figuring on the list. I have

“Child abuse is a real issue in our
community. Protecting the youngest, most
vulnerable is an important focus for me this
year. National is taking steps to change the
way we support families and communities
to raise our children, after decades of good
intentions that have still failed our kids.
“We are making changes to the Justice
system to protect children from abuse. Our
goal is to build a safer New Zealand and this
begins with our vulnerable children.
“We will introduce new laws that
toughen the penalty for neglecting or ill-
treating a child. We will also introduce a
new offence of failing to protect a child from
New free used oil recovery scheme launched
H
ouseholds in the Auckland region
can now dispose of their used engine
oil for free thanks to a new scheme
launched this week by Auckland Council in
conjunction with industry partners and the
support of Government.
Being piloted in Auckland for three years
and potentially rolled out nationwide in future,
the new scheme aims to ensure the majority
of used engine oil generated by households
in the region is captured and then recycled or
disposed of.
Auckland Council Manager Infrastructure
& Environmental Services John Dragicevich
says under the new scheme announced
by Minister for Environment, Nick Smith,
residents can drop off their used engine oil to
Repco stores throughout the region or to Total
Lubricants’ office in East Tamaki.
It will subsequently be collected and either
safely disposed of or recycled. The used engine
oil must be in a sealed leak-proof container -
preferably a #2 recyclable container such as
those placed inside the drop-off bins provided
at these stores.
Dragicevich says in Auckland alone
householders produce an estimated 656,000
litres of used oil annually but only a third
of that is believed to be disposed of safely,
meaning the balance is potentially ending up
harming the environment.

the needs of the family as a whole. This year,
25 dedicated Whānau Ora providers will be
working across New Zealand to improve the
lives of families and their children.
“We are committed to building a
brighter future for every child, no matter
where they are born, or how much there
parents earn. We want our children to have
the best possible start to life.”
Auckland Council Environment and
Sustainability Committee Chairperson, Wayne
Walker explains that while systems already
existed for collection of used oil from high-
volume generators such as motor mechanics,
there was no oil industry-led system for the
collection of used oil from low-volume used
oil generators such as ‘do-it-yourself’ home
mechanics.
“With this new scheme Auckland
households can now be very clear as to where
their used engine oil goes. It will then be dealt
with under Ministry of the Environment-
approved product stewardship schemes.
This is a great solution we trust industry will
eventually take full responsibility for.”
The key partners in the new pilot scheme
are: Auckland Council, Repco, the Ministry for
the Environment, collection agency R.O.S.E.
(Recover Oil Save Environment), Castrol,
Orica, Total Lubricants, Penrite and Fuchs.
The scheme is also supported by the Motor
Trade Association.

Yogesh and Mumta – NZ’s leading
couple in Bollywood Entertainment
T
hey have a strong passion for Bollywood
and everything that comes under the
purview of entertainment and it is in
keeping with this passion that the husband
and wife team of Yogeh and Mumta of
Auckland, have been hosting the Bollwyood
Male Dance Competition- INDI KING, year
after year.
The two got into the act in 2008 soon
after their first son Rahul was born. They
felt that there was something amiss in the
NZ entertainment industry and decided
to introduce the concept of bringing to the
fore talented NZ males. Later that year with
Rahul as the key inspiration, Yogesh founded
NZ’s first and only Bollywood Male Dance
Comp – INDI KING.
‘INDI KING’s concept is about crowning
a lead male entrant as the King of the dance
floor’, who later walks away with the prize
money of $1,000. The lead male entrant can
either dance solo or share his talent with
supporting background dancers,” reveals
Mumta, who is also the event manager of the
show.
The show later made it to TV1 when the
producers of TV1’s ‘Close Up’ learnt about
the popularity of the show and decided to
screen it on National TV. Recalls Mumta, ‘It
was quite exciting to know that the event had
made it to TV1. The event took place on the
8th of November 2008 and it was screened on
National Television on the 10th of November.
More exciting was the fact that the event was
aired soon after Prime Minister John Key’s
interview on Close Up that year.”
It didn’t take the Bollywood couple long to
build a strong production team and register
amazing talent. The competition started in a
small town hall and sold out a week before the
event, then it moved on to Dorothy Winstone
Event Centre which again sold out a further
two years. With 2011 being the fourth annual
event, Yogesh and Mumta have taken INDI
KING to a whole new level, where it will now
be held at Telstra Clear Pacific Event Centre.
According to Yogesh, since the centre
has an audience capacity of 3000, they are
expecting a record crowd of contestants,
guest performers and well wishers with their
families to catch up on the excitement. Says
Yogesh, “Our performers are thrilled about
performing in this kind of an arena. It gives
them the feeling of being a part of IIFA or
Filmfare awards.”
It doesn’t just stop here for these two!!

their second son (Rian, now 3 months old)
Yogesh’s creativity emerged with the concept
of ‘King of Kings’ to further support the talent
of INDI KING. Says Mumta, “‘King of Kings’

newly formed band ‘Sargam’ – an
enchanting seven piece ensemble,
has been brought together to embrace
a fusion of Indian classical, contemporary
Indian, Bollywood, Sufi and Western music
to create an unmatchable fusion of styles.
The band Sargam features the prominent
Kiwi Indian talents Ashish Ramakrishan
as the Male Lead Vocalist, Moushumi
Das as the Female Lead Vocalist, Basant
Madhur (Tabla), Deepak Madhur (Tabla
/Manual Percussions), Swapnil Gomez
(Drums), Hemant Thakker (Keyboard),
Ravi Nayayapati (Percussions).
Sargam shall be performing at the
Auckland Domain on March 6 from 6pm-

judges’ scorecard and the viewers’ choice. It
certainly will be an interesting competition,”
says Yogesh. Mumta has the last word.

City Council’s 2011 ‘Music in Parks’ runs
from January to April, and features over 20
concerts comprising four different series,
each with its own unique ethos.
This year for the very first time in the
history of ‘Music in Parks’, an Indian band
shall be showcased at the festival. This
is a moment of pride and joy for every
Kiwi Indian as some of their own talented
musicians make it to the International
Music bandwagon held in NZ this year.
