To summarize, the U.S., Brazil and Mexico, all
of them governed by leaders that academics
describe as populists, did worse than their non-
populist colleagues, but that the response
of different populist governments varied in
terms of their results, and that other leaders,
like those of the UK, Italy and Sweden didn’t
perform as well as expected. What follows from
this quick comparative effort is that it is difficult
to establish a clear, causal connection between
populism and failure in tackling the covid-19
pandemic, or between non-populism and
success. The lesson we might learn from this is
that populism functions basically as a word to
disqualify political adversaries as incompetent,
ordinary, or unworthy of higher office. One
doesn’t simply call adversaries “populists”; one
accuses them of being populists and then draws
all kinds of policy and political inferences from
this fact.
