Taps are made from carbon steel or high speed steel and are hardened and tempered. Hand
taps are usually made in sets of three. According to IS specification they are called 1) Rougher
2) Intermediate and 3) Finisher. The taps are used in sequence to cut the threads. Cutting
inside threads is called tapping. After the hole has been drilled with the tap drill, it is ready
for tapping.
