Question e Briefly discuss the process by which a typical oil-fired power plant generates electricity. Identify one advantage and one disadvantage of using oil rather than coal to generate electricity. e Identify one primary air pollutant likely to be emitted by the new oil-fired power plant. Identify one secondary pollutant likely to result from this primary pollutant, and describe the process by which the primary pollutant is converted into the secondary pollutant. e Describe one negative effect that either of the pollutants identified in part (b) could have on the health of the townspeople. Describe one negative effect that either of the pollutants identified in part (b) could have on the surrounding environment. e Explain how oil-fired power plants contribute to global climate change. Discuss an alternative source of energy for the town (other than continuing to purchase electricity from another community) that would not contribute to global climate change. Answered by Expert Tutors OIL-FIRED POWER PLANT Electricity production This can be done through; a. convectional steam where oil is used to heat water which in turn produces steam to run turbine that generate electricity b. Combustion turbine where oil is burned under pressure to release hot exhaust gases which are then used to run the turbines for energy production. c. Combined-cycle technology. This looks like a combination of a and b above. It involves heating oil in the combustion turbine and then harnessing the exhaust gases to heat water in a boiler which then runs a second turbine to produce electricity. Advantages Electricity production from oil consumes less water compared to electricity generation from coal. Disadvantages Electricity production from oil is associated with releases of hydrogen sulfide which is highly flammable and toxic unlike coal 2. The primary pollutant is sulfur dioxide. This primary pollutant results to sulfuric acid as the secondary pollutant. Sulfur dioxide is converted into sulfuric acid through its reaction with water. This results into acid rain. 3. Negative health effects of sulfuric acid include; a. Irritation on human skin b. Damage to the lungs Environmental effects include; Smog formation which reduces visibility 4 Global climate change from oil-fired power plants Oil-fired power plant contributes to global climate change through; a. Production of carbon dioxide which contributes to global warming b. Removal of forests during oil drilling leads to global increase in temperatures. c. Decrease in water contributes negative impacts on the hydrological Alternative sources of energy would include; a. _ solar power b. wind power c. Hydrothermal power Overall rating 100% Is this answer helpful?
