Where is the best place to get a penicillin shot at,
and how bad do they hurt?
Penicillin has to be given by intramuscular injection.
In my opinion, it is safest to give it into the vastus lateralis muscle - the side of the thigh. This obviates the possibility of hitting the sciatic nerve when giving the injection into the buttock. However, the buttock (gluteus maximus) remains the most common site for intramuscular injections. From what patients have said to me, I believe that penicillin injections are quite painful.
Why isn't penicillin helping with my sinus infection?
How long does it usually take?
Penicillin won't help because your sinus infection is
probably viral and an antibiotic is not going to help. You need something that will clear your sinuses, get rid of the mucous, and then you will start feeling better. Also, most viruses can last at least 2 weeks, so depending on the duration of illness so far, it may just need more time to resolve.
