Carl Jung’s : Animus and Anima

Jungian Archetype, as suggested by Carl Jung, is defined as an image originating

from the collective unconscious. Archetypes are usually represented in dreams, literature,
art, or beliefs. Jung believed that symbols in culture are often similar to one another
because they arise from an archetype shared by all of humanity which is called part of the
collective unconscious.

According to Jung, the basis of the human soul comes from primitive past
experiences that direct and influence human behavior today. Jung specifically mentions
four archetypes as Self, Persona, Shadow and Anima / Animus.

Anima is Latin for "soul", which is a very imaginative and seductive feminine
power in humans, also known as eros. Meanwhile, Animus is Latin for "spirit", which is a
very deliberate and visionary masculinity in a woman, also known as a logo.

Anima is an archetype which reveals that in men there are a few feminine qualities,
and Animus is an expression of masculine qualities in a woman. Every man has a woman in
him, and in a woman, there is a man. More precisely there is an image of an ideal man or
ideal woman that is formed from the experiences of the mother or father, or by the
influence of culture or heritage.

Simply put, this archetype is a reflection of human biological sex. The unconscious
feminist side of men and the unconscious masculine side of women.

When Anima and the Animus unite, they created Syzygy, which is a term that
represents two separate human parts that wrap their arms around each other and become
one again, as described by Plato.
Jung said that dealing with one's own image is "part of the apprenticeship", while
dealing with one's anima is a masterpiece. Jung saw the process of anima as a source of
creative ability.
