Earthworks

Definition of Terms
Excavation – is used in construction to create building
foundations, reservoirs and roads.

Backfill – to refill an excavated hole with the material dug out of


it.

Earthfill – A composite material used in construction to raise the


first floor concrete slab to the desired elevation from the
natural ground line, comprising a mixture of soil, gravel, broken
rock, etc.

Gravel fill - is placed outside the finished poured concrete


foundation. This ensures that moisture does not stand around
the foundation for any time. The moisture is routed to the
footing drain for fast dispersal.
