An industry is not always big as people think it is. They figure out industry as giant factory
operating huge machines with heavy equipment, employing a large number of personnel working days
and nights, producing large quantities of products for consumers. It is industry in a big sike like the one
you can find in japan for automobile industry and in Germany for its steel industry or in the U.S.A. for its
airplane industry.

Let’s think of our own industries which are still constantly growing, they are still very weak and
need guides and constructive control. We call them home industries.

The government pays much attention to industrializing farming. The majority of Indonesian
farmers do not have large land, but they must prpoduce food products much enough for the population.
Without industrializing agriculture it seems implosible for everybody to get enough food for his life. The
government is working hard in agriculture industrializing by bulding more fertilizer factories, improving
land management, encouraging young people to be agricultural experts. It also gives credits to business
people who can produce farm equipments such as insecticide sprayers. Spades, hoes, and so on.

Industrilization spreas out to tourism, handicrafis, home appliances and kitchen untesils. Low-
capital industry owners get credits from the government if they show their hard work.

Now, many housewives use stoves made in pekalongan, more people use water pumps made in
tegal.

Textile industries are bringing out new kinds of textile so that it is difficult to market them.
People are familiar with caterina, bellini and friendship. These products enable home industries to
produce intreasing garment industries.

In the near future, we will see csrs and planes made in Indonesia. However, out home industries
still need protection from the government to be able to grow stronger so the can complete with foreign
products (taken from warsono, at.al, 1995)
