 Brief historical background of Science and Technology in the Philippines.

PRE-SPANISH

 Science is embedded in the way of life.

 Technology is used by people in building houses, irrigations, and in developing tool that
they can use in everyday life.
 They developed tools for planting, hunting, cooking, and fishing; for fighting their
enemies during war or tribal conflicts; and transportation.

SPANISH COLONIZATION

 They brought their own culture and practices.

 They established schools for boys and girls and introduced the concept of subjects and
disciplines.
 It was the beginning of formal science and technology in the country known as school of
science and technology.

AMERICAN COLONIZATION

 The Americans have more influence in the development of science and technology in
the Philippines compared to the Spaniards.
 The Americans did everything to “Americanized” the Philippines.
 They recognized the learning of science and introduced it in public and private schools.

 Give 10 famous Filipinos (recent days) in the field of Science and their contributions.

The 10 most famous filipino scientists

1. Eduardo San Juan

Filipino Inventor: Mechanical engineer, Eduardo San Juan worked on the team that invented the
Lunar Rover or Moon Buggy. Eduardo San Juan is considered the primary designer of the Lunar
Rover.

Moon Buggy: In 1971, the Moon Buggy was first used by during the Apollo 12 landing to
explore the Moon.

2. Roberto del Rosario

Karaoke Sing Along SystemRoberto del Rosario - Filipino Inventor: Roberto del Rosario is the
president of the Trebel Music Corporation and the inventor of the Karaoke Sing Along System in
1975. Roberto del Rosario has patented more than twenty inventions making him one of the most
prolific Filipino inventor. Besides his famous Karaoke Sing Along System Roberto del Rosario
has also invented:

Trebel Voice Color Code (VCC)

piano tuner’s guide
piano keyboard stressing device
voice color tape

3. Rudy Lantano Sr
Inventor of Fuel Products=In 1996, Rudy Lantano Sr., a scientist from the Philippine Department
of Science and Technology (DOST), won the World Intellectual Property Organization (WIPO)
gold medal for developing Super Bunker Formula-L, a revolutionary fuel half-composed of
water. The mix burns faster and emits pollutants, 95 percent less than those released to the air by
traditional fuel products. The inventor said his invention is a result of blending new ingredients
and additives with ordinary oil products through agitation and mixing, which is a very safe
process. The initial plan was to commercially produce two million liters of Alco-Diesel, two
million liters of Lan-Gas and an unlimited quantity of Super Bunker Formula-L each day for
customers in Luzon.

4. Daniel Dingel
Water-Powered CarDaniel Dingel - Water-Powered Car or Water-Powered Hoax?: Filipino
inventor, Daniel Dingel designs cars that run on water. The Philippine Daily Inquirer reported
that Daniel Dingel built a water-fueled automobile engine as early as 1969. Dingel has no patents
and many members of the science community feel that his water-powered car is a hoax.
However, Daniel Dingel has demonstrated his car without any technical papers or explanation as
to how it works. And if it does work, a water-powered car would be a fantastic invention.

Daniel Dingel claims his engine has a chamber that breaks apart water molecules to produce
combustible hydrogen. Electricity from a 12-volt car battery to used to split the water molecules
into hydrogen and oxygen components, with the hydrogen then used to power the car engine.

5. Josefino Comiso
Filipino Physicist Global warming Josefino Comiso - Filipino Physicist: Josefino Comiso is a
Filipino physicist working at the NASA Goddard Space Flight Center studing global warming in
the Arctic. Josefino Comiso was the first person to discover a recurring polynya in the
Cosmonaut Sea, south of the Indian Ocean. A polynya is a semipermanent area of open water in
sea ice.

6. Paulo Campos

Filipino Scientist: Filipino scientist, Doctor Paulo Campos is a specialist in nuclear medicine and
the award winning writer of over seventy-five scientific papers including:
Observation of Some Parameter of Insulin Action
Cr-51 Tagged Red Cell Studies
The Genetic Factor in Endemic Goiter
Paulo Campos built the first radioisotope laboratory in the Philippines.

7. Julian Banzon
Filipino ChemistJulian Banzon - Filipino Chemist: Filipino chemist, Julian Banzon researched
methods of producing alternative fuels. Julian Banzon experimented with the production of ethyl
esters fuels from sugarcane and coconut, and invented a means of extracting residual coconut oil
by a chemical process rather than a physical process.

Julian Banzon - Degrees:

BS in Chemistry from the University of the Philippines - 1930
Ph.D. in Biophysical Chemistry from Iowa State University - 1940
Julian Banzon - Awards:
1980: Distinguished Service Award - Integrated Chemist of the Philippines, Inc.
1978: Chemist of the Year Award - Professional Regulation Commission
1976: Philsugin Award - Crop Society of the Philippines

8. Agapito Flores

Fluorescent LightsAgapito Flores was born in Guiguinto, Bulacan, Philippines on September 28,
1897. He worked as an apprentice in a machine shop and later moved to Tondo, Manila where he
trained at a vocational school to become an electrician.
It has been reported that Agapito Flores received a French patent for a fluorescent bulb and that
the General Electric Company bought Flores’ patent rights and manufactured and sold his
fluorescent bulb (making millions from it).

The Agapito Flores controversy continues - Agapito Flores has been acclaimed by some as being
the inventor of the first fluorescent lamp. However, the dates are all wrong for this being
possible. The following points have been taken from “The History of Fluorescent Lights”.

9. Rolando dela Cruz

Mole Remover=In 2000, Rolando dela Cruz developed an ingenuous formula that could easily
remove deeply grown moles or warts from the skin without leaving marks or hurting the patient.
His formula was extracted from cashew nut (Annacardium occidentale), which is common in the
Philippines. The formula won for dela Cruz a gold medal in International Invention, Innovation,
Industrial Design and Technology Exhibition in Kuala Lumpur in September 2000. In March
1997, dela Cruz established RCC Amazing Touch International Inc., which runs clinics engaged
"in a non-surgical removal of warts, moles and other skin growths, giving the skin renewed
energy and vitality without painful and costly surgery."
