When the Saints go Marching In

Materials: Room to move

Goal: Improve and maintain motor function and mobility in upper and lower expremeties

Objectives: 1A: Client sing along with the MT and group.

1B: Client will perform at least one of the movements (clap, march, tap) when prompted by MT.

Procedure:

1. MT will sing the first verse of Oh When the Saints go Marchin In, acapella with hand claps,
prompting the group to sing a long and join in. It can be repeated until the group is engaged.
2. MT will pause and demonstrate singing the first verse again while marching in place in a
seated position.
3. MT will invite the clients to stay seated and march in place to the song.
4. MT will pause and demonstrate tapping each foot while singing the second verse (“Oh when
the band….”).
5. MT will invite clients to tap each foot while singing along to the second verse.
6. MT will pause and demonstrate wrist rotation/sunshine movement while singing the third
verse (“Oh when the sun…”).
7. MT will invite clients to perform wrist rotation/sunshine movement along to the third verse.
8. MT will lead the group in the first verse again, with clapping to conclude.

Adaptations:

1. Remove the multiple movements and just have client clap, or march in place for the entirety
of the intervention (Easier)
2. Have the client continue to clap while simultaneously performing the lower extremity
movements (Harder)
Intervention: Gospel Sing Along

Materials: Guitar/Keyboard, lyric sheet

Goal: To improve and maintain cognitive skills; to improve long term memory recall; improve social
skills; reduction of anxiety

Objectives: 1A Clients will engage with group by singing along to familiar hymns

1B: Clients will show signs of reduced anxiety and improved mood through body language.

Procedure:

MT will lead the group in the following hymns.

Amazing Grace

How Great Thou Art

In the Garden

What a Friend we Have in Jesus

Softly and Tenderly

Because He Lives

Adaptations:

1. Clients will listen receptively instead of singing along (Easier)


2. Clients will identify the hymn from hearing the first few measures before singing the hymn together
(harder)
