Compulsory Self-Reflection Question (7 marks; Be sure to write in full sentences, not bullet points.)

Humber College has identified several core values that are important for all students in all programs of study. Two of
these are (1) “equity, diversity and inclusion” and (2) “sustainability.” Explain what each of these means to you. Then
provide several specific ways you can apply these values in your future career and life. (Minimum: three specific
examples.) Finally, reflect on how your Unit 3 studies in GNED 101 can help you strengthen these values. In other words,
why is it important to learn about globalization and colonization, no matter what you’re studying at Humber?
[ANSWERS]

(2) “Human flagpoles” and “Inuit Disc numbers” relates to the definition of colonization in many ways. The practice
involved in human flagpole was to relocate the Inuit people to arctic island by the Canadian government Whereas in the
practice of Inuit Disc numbers, the recognition of Inuit people where done through number tag instead of their original
name. The practice of Colonization means to acquire control over another country with their citizen and traditions. I
believe that both acts are closely related to those of colonization because it leads to an offensive act for the Inuit
people. It is same as treating human being as animal and leads to act of dehumanizing.

(4) Globalisation is referred as the interconnection of trade and business within two or more nation. It involves
establishing interaction and integration among people, companies, and government of different countries. Globalisation
is a “multi-dimensional phenomenon”. It majorly involves areas of Economic, Cultural, Political, Technological, and
environmental activities. Through exchange of ideas among people from all over the world, it helps to reduce cultural
barriers and creates a small global world. It helps in bringing their business to a large platform which results in increased
economic position for both developed and developing countries. For Example: Mac Donald’s – It is a multinational
company and it has it branches in many countries. As a result of Cultural aspect of India, it does not include beef in any
of its Indian menu. Thus, Globalisation is multidimensional, and it aims to create a borderless world.

(5) Coca-Colonization is referred as globalisation of American culture through American soft drink – Coca cola. There are
many favorable outcomes from globalisation of Coca cola. First, through globalisation of Coca cola , it is available to
many different countries across the globe. Second, It helps to consumer to get access to variety of drinks. On the other
side, there are many limitations that entire world faces as an action of Coca-Colonization. First, the sales of domestic
soft drink companies get affected. Second, due to lack of sales there may be situation of unemployment and decline in
GDP of domestic country. Another example of MNC is a famous American food Restaurant- ‘Subway’ , who runs their
business in more then 100 countries. Thus, globalisation comes with both positive and negative outcomes.

Compulsory self reflection Answer:

There are several core values that are important for every individual to develop during their life. The two core values
are: “Equity, diversity and Inclusion” and “Sustainability”. I believe equity means to give equal importance to each
person. Diversity means the distinct qualities, tradition and believes of different group of people. Inclusion means to
give respect and mix with other people without any discrimination. I think we can apply these values in our future career
and life by learning more about the culture and tradition of person around us , For example: If we have some friend who
is not from same country but from a different country like Africa or Germany , It is certain that the values beliefs and
tradition is going to be entirely different but we should try to learn about their culture and about them. It helps to create
Understanding among each other. It is like globalisation as it involves steps to interconnect and integrate whole world
into a small village where people can build relation with people all around the world and run their business. I Believe
globalisation and these values are kind of same thing which we got to learn from GNED101 course, and it definitely helps
in strengthening such positive qualities in our live.
