A Day in the Life of

a Drama Student
Unlike some college courses and university
degrees, going to drama school will certainly
take over your life. It is going to be fun but it
isn’t going to be easy. The one, two or three
years will fly by and before you know it you
will be out in that big wide world with a head
full of knowledge.

Your life will change from day one and you may be shocked if you have just come from a normal high school.
You should get used to very early mornings and don’t be surprised if you need to be at school before 8 am.
You might have to do body stretches and vocal exercises, getting your head and body ready for the long day
ahead. You are going to need a whole lot of commitment and dedication.

You will also have a variety of classes to attend during the day times. You will be given study periods which
you should spend in the library and not in the student cafe. Most drama schools will have a basic timetable of
around 10 am to 5 pm and all the extra work is done before and after those times.

There are the text studies and research to be done for your essays. It’s not all about acting, it’s about
expressing yourself on paper too. A lot of drama students get part time evening jobs in restaurants which
again is hard on you especially if you have a class the next morning at 9 am. What do you think? Would you
like to be a drama student?

The Best Advice to Give Teenagers

Sometimes it can be difficult for adults to understand
teenagers and for them to understand adults. However,
advice at any age can be useful. So, teenagers, listen up!
Here is some of the most important advice we want to
share with you.
Don’t Try to Plan Your Entire Life Out: It’s often in your teenage years that you first start thinking about your
future. You might begin to consider the types of career you want or the lifestyle you want to have. We would
say to you that you can’t always stick rigidly to a plan, no matter how well thought out it may be. One of the
main pieces of advice to give is that you shouldn’t put specific dates on the major events in your life.

Copyright © Macenta Publishing & Digital Solutions

Saying No Is Fine: As a teenager, you may find that there is a lot of pressure to say yes to everything; this
could come from your friends or from other people you know, in and out of school. A part of growing up is to
make some mistakes and learn from them, but making a mistake because someone else told you to is not the
best idea. Maybe some of your friends are going to the cinema, but you don’t really want to. It’s ok to say no
to these and other opportunities that come your way.
Stay Open Minded to The Views and Opinions of Others: As you grow older, you begin to form your own
world view and you might have very strong opinions on certain topics. These opinions will often be different
to those of other people and it is easy to start arguing about them. Instead, you should listen to what these
other people are saying. There isn’t always a wrong and a right.

The Invention of the Football
Early footballs were actually inflated animals’ bladders which were then tied and closed, much like
balloons with a knot. As a result, they were not perfectly round. Another problem was they would often
explode. Because of this, shoemakers used leather to sew the balls into a special case.

In Europe the first proper football was made by Lindon and William Gilbert. Their football was the
first-round ball. In 1849, Lindon was working in front of a rugby school in England. His customers often
asked him to make footballs for the boys at the school.

As a shoemaker he regularly received leather for making shoes so he used this material to create the
balls for the boys. His wife often helped him; she blew the air into the animal bladders before Lindon
covered them with leather. This was a dangerous job as some of the bladders came from ill animals.

In 1862 Lindon invented an inner tube made of natural rubber. It was easy to work with and he
could create a perfect sphere with it. He then covered it with 7 strips of leather. His design
became so popular that it was the only one he used for all the footballs he made. He also
invented an air pump to keep the football inflated. However, during his life he never
patented any part of his design.

21st Century Life Skills Kids

Should Know
Most parents in the 21st century want to make sure
their kids are strong academically. We all know that
schoolwork matters, but there are other life skills that
may be more important in the future.
Communication
Kids learn most of their communication skills at home through parents and siblings. The more we can
demonstrate good communication skills, the more our kids will be better prepared to talk with people outside
their family. Don’t forget that listening is a critical part of communication — not just speaking.
Collaboration
“Collaborate” is just a fancy word for knowing how to work with others. When do kids have an opportunity
to work with others? When they’re playing. Older kids often learn collaboration skills through organized
activities such as sports teams, dance classes, etc. Parents should try to coach their kids through challenges
as they come up.
Persistence
Someone with persistence not only has the courage to take on a challenging task, but they also stick with it to

see it through to a successful end. These skills are essential for entrepreneurs, scientists and other important
career paths. We should see failure as an opportunity to learn from and then persistence will follow.

Why are they acting like this?

On the afternoon of 29 July 2020, nine killer whales surrounded Victoria Morris’s boat off the coast of Spain.
At first she was excited; this wasn’t her first-time meeting orcas. But the atmosphere quickly changed when
the whales started ramming and spinning the boat 180 degrees. At one point, Victoria watched parts of the
boat float away.
The pod rammed the boat for more than an hour, during this time the crew were too busy getting the sails
and radioing a mayday – “Orca attack!” – to feel fear. When Victoria went below deck to prepare a bag she
heard a scary noise. The orcas were whistling to each other and it was so loud that the people on the boat
had to shout to communicate. The crew understood the orcas were all working together to damage the boat.
The crew waited an hour and a half for rescue and by the time help arrived, the orcas were gone. The boat
was helped to the nearest port and was examined. When it was lifted, they could see teeth marks along the
bottom.
Rocío Espada works with the marine biology laboratory at the University of Seville and has observed this
population of orca in the Gibraltar Straits for years. She was shocked. She said, “I’ve seen these orcas grow
from babies, I know their life stories, I’ve never seen or heard of attacks.” Orca specialists around the world
are also surprised. They agree the behaviour is “highly unusual”. Most agree that something is stressing the
orcas. And when it comes to sources of stress, there are plenty to choose from.

A Tiny Miscommunication with

a Massive Consequence
Before George Washington became the first president
of the United States in 1789, he was a young soldier for
Britain. At that time both Britain and France were fighting
over areas of land in the US. Washington was sent to a
fort near Pittsburgh controlled by French-Canadians.
Washington surprised the French force under the command of Joseph Coulon de Villiers de Jumonville. He
was able to surround them in a small ravine, but then Jumonville was killed and nobody really knows why.
Perhaps Washington ordered an attack, or somebody accidentally fired their weapon, creating chaos.
However, the real problems began after the French forces in the fort found out about the death of Jumonville.
In fact, the fort was under the control of Jumonville’s brother. Washington was trying to retreat to safety
when he became surrounded and agreed to surrender. The two sides agreed, but the surrender document
was written in French – a language George couldn’t read.
Washington wanted a peaceful resolution so he pretended he could read it and signed the treaty. Because
he couldn’t read what was written he didn’t see the sentence added by Jumonville’s brother. It said that the
British troops had “assassinated” a French ambassador. This was a huge insult to France and when George
signed it he admitted to the “assassination” in writing. This foolish miscommunication started a global war.

What are the World’s Oldest Languages?

Currently, about 7,000 languages are spoken around the world. They belong
to different language families and their origins date back thousands of years
ago. Researchers are still finding it difficult to determine which language is the
oldest. Here are some examples.
Egyptian: Egyptian is considered one of the oldest languages in the world, as
it is already about 4,700 years old. Autobiographical writings found on walls of
Egyptian tombs were said to be created around 2600 BC to 2000 BC. In Egypt,
the language is the country’s oldest language.
Chinese: The first script that appeared with Chinese characters was from
1250 BC. This makes it more than 3,000 years old. Currently, it is the language
with the most speakers. According to the latest data, about 1.24 billion speak
Chinese as their first language .
Latin: Latin first appeared in 75 BC. There is also Old Latin that was used before
this. The Roman Empire elected to make Latin its formal language, making it
an important language at that time. Latin was the origin of all the Romance
languages – Spanish, French, Italian, Portuguese, Catalan and Romanian and
many words today, including a number of words in modern-day English. Latin is
still around. It remains an official language in the Vatican and in Poland. Millions
of people are still learning the language, although it is mostly taught as a course
in higher education classes.

William Wallace
William Wallace was a Scottish knight who fought the King of
Edward I of England in the Middle Ages. Wallace was probably
born around 1270-1272, but little is known about his birth or
childhood. Exactly where and when Wallace was born is not
very clear. Some people say he was born about 1272, but a
book printed in the 16th century called History of William
Wallace and Scottish Affairs says he was born in 1276.

While William was alive, King Edward offered Scotland a

deal which allowed them to have a Scottish king so long as
King Edward was still in charge. This required the Scottish
nobles to swear allegiance to him. Wallace refused, and
led the resistance which followed. At the Battle of
Stirling Bridge in 1297, won by Wallace against a
much larger force. In the six months following
Stirling Bridge, Wallace led a raid into northern
England. He wanted to show that Scotland also

had the power to damage areas in England the
way the English had done in Scotland.

Wallace escaped capture by the English until 5 August 1305. He was taken to London at Westminster Hall,
where he was tried for treason. At his trial he said, “I could not be a traitor to Edward because I was never
his subject”. After the trial, on 23 August 1305, Wallace was taken from the hall, and dragged through the
city at the heels of a horse. He was given the worst kind of execution in English Law.

In 2002 William Wallace was ranked as number 48 of the 100 Greatest Britons in a detailed UK survey
done by the BBC.
