The Principal’s Speech – SS’ errors [2]

I. Some of the following sentences are run-on sentences; others contain punctuation problems; a few have
problems of logic; and still others are instances of a different kind of problem. Only one of the sentences is
correct. Two sentences fall into two categories. Can you distinguish the five categories? Which sentences
fall into each of these categories? In the chart below, write the numbers of the sentences belonging in
each of these five categories.

1. It has recently come to my attention that some students have not been attending classes regularly.

This is a very serious situation; as a result, you cannot qualify for a good job.

2. If you have a positive attitude toward the material; therefore, you will see that it can be interesting.

3. If you have a positive attitude toward the material; moreover, you will see that it can be

interesting.

4. Nevertheless if you have a positive attitude toward the material, you will see that it can be

interesting.

5. Furthermore, I’ve heard several students say that classes are boring, however if you have a positive

attitude toward the material, you will see that it can be interesting.

6. You cannot get good grades if you do not attend classes, moreover you cannot qualify for a good

job.

7. If you do not attend classes, you can neither get good grades nor qualify for a good job.

8. A good education is the most valuable of possessions, therefore, I urge all of you to attend classes

regularly.

9. It’s true that many employers don’t look at grades; furthermore, they don’t want employees what

are well educated, responsible and have a positive attitude.
