Strand F
In a familiar book that is read to them, the pupil can answer questions in discussion with the teacher
and make simple inferences.

Task
Activity One – Answering Story Questions
While reading familiar stories with the pupils, pause at an
appropriate part, such as at the end of the page and ask
questions about what is going to happen next. Draw or
write what the pupil tells you on a Now and Next Board.
Turn over the page – read, check and discuss how closely
the response given matches what happens in the book.

Activity Two – Inferencing

Use the Inference Picture and Question Cards to
develop inferencing skills. Support the pupils to answer
the questions based on the picture prompts.
Use the inferencing prompts (When?, Who?, Where?, What
like? etc.) on the Colourful Semantics Visual Cue Cards
for IKEA Tolsby Frames to support questionning.

Activity Three – Blanks Questioning

Use Ronald the Rhino eBook and the accompanying
Ronald the Rhino Talk Cards to support the development
and knowledge of simple inference. Read the story with
the pupils and encourage them to answer the inference
questions.
