The Communication Workshop; An Adventure in Responsibility Skills The Rat and Cheese Story (script from video) One day a rat found himself sitting in front of several small ‘tunnels. Curious, he studied them and it wasn't long before his keen sense of smell told him that somewhere, down one of the tunnels, was a piece of cheese. Mouth watering, he raced up and down the tunnels locking for the cheese. Nothing in the first tunnel; nothing in the second tunre, But when he got to the third tunnel, there it wos... rich and succulent piece of yellow cheese, which he instantly gobbled down, Everyday the rat would return and zip down the third tunne| to claim his prize. He was a smart and hoppy rat becouse he knew where the cheese was. Then one day the rat raced down the third tunnel only to discover, the cheese was gone. He scurried back out of the tunnel to look around --to make sure it was the same tunnel, ‘then he raced back down for another look. No cheese, Again he scurried in and out of the third tunnel. He searched every nook and cranny. He was just about to give up when all of a sudden it cccurred to him, "Why, there is no cheese in this tunnel." With thet the rat, excited but somewhat apprehensive at the prospect of a new adventure began slowly exploring the other tunnels. Sure enough, he found that at the end of one of the other tunnels was the biggest piece of cheese he had ever seen and smiling, he gobbled it down. Now, up to a point people: behave exactly like the rat looking for the cheese. The difference is that eventually the rat stops going down the tunnel with no cheese, People may go down the tunnel long after there is no cheese. That tunnel becomes the "right" tunnel. Tt's often a major achievement just to discover there's no cheese. The purpose of The Communication Workshop; An Adventure in Responsibility Skills is to demonstrate how to go down the tunnel with the cheese.
