Lecture 3: Foremanship
Foreman:
A foreman is a person who is in charge of a particular department, group of workers,
A foreman typically occupies the first supervisory tier, ranking above workers but below managers, The
job title is most often found in the construction, manufacturing and repair industries. Exact duties depend
on the industry involved, the employer and the foreman's training or experience.
Unlike most managerial staff, foremen typically gain their position by virtue of years of experience in the
job instead of through education or training programs. Regardless of industry, a foreman is often the point
of contact between upper management and rank-and-file cmployces.
Duties of Foreman:
The job of foreman typically requires certain basic duties
1) Organize Employee Activities
Foremen determine the priorities for work to be done, sometimes based on their own initiative and
authority, but more ofien based on needs communicated by sales or management. They must
determine whether they have the number of employees possessing the required skills for the job,
verify that the needed items are available and direct employees on which tasks are to be completed
first.
2) Handle the Staff Functions
Foreman sometimes also play an important role in hiring. discharges, raises and promotions of
workers. They may be needed to writing a justification for firing a worker
3) Act as a safety coordinator:
Employers generally expect foremen to ensure that workers abey all safety regulations.
Foremen may be responsible for communicating safety procedures to employees or offering safety
training to new workers, Some foremen inspect the work environment or equipment to Verify that no
hazardous conditions exist. In the event of an accident, the foreman is likely the one who will prepare
the incident report
4) Other Duties:
Depending on the job, a foreman may be responsible for tracking inventory and initiating
requisitions for needed parts of supplies. The foreman must often prepare progress or production
reports, schedule downtime for routine maintenance.
They may be responsible for training new workers. A foreman may also be the preliminary contact for
‘work-related issues that emplayces may have, such as requests to take leave time or questions about
promotions.
