ROCK AGAINST BUSH. Now that John Kerry has deigned to

accept his party’s nomination at the FleetCenter in July, he’ll need
to raise that extra five weeks’ worth of campaign fuel. A bunch of
local acts are chipping in over the next few weeks (see also below
under "Thursday 10") as part of a coordinated national effort — see
www.concertsforkerry.org — to get our favorite son into the White House.
Tonight’s Concert for Kerry finds Owen Plant, Rachel Sage, and
Popgun getting their vote on at Johnny D’s, 17 Holland Street in
Davis Square. One hundred percent of the door goes to the
campaign; call (617) 776-2004.

JAZZ. Cuban-born trumpeter Arturo Sandoval matches insane

virtuosity (he even plays a little piano) that’s always tempered by
superb musicality — i.e., he entertains without pandering, a trait he
shares with his late mentor, Dizzy Gillespie. Sandoval is at Scullers,
400 Soldiers Field Road at the Mass Pike; call (617) 562-4111.

Public Library.) Omayra Amaya Flamenco Dance Company,

EVENTS

CLASSICAL IDOL? Somehow we can’t see the ebullient Keith

Lockhart summoning up Simon Cowell–like putdowns, but the
maestro has nonetheless joined the American Idol bandwagon and
initiated Boston Popsearch 2004, a talent hunt for an unknown
singer to join the Pops’ Fourth of July extravaganza in front of a

live and television audience numbering in the millions. (Is it any

coincidence that the Pops TV broadcast happens to go network-
nationwide this year?) We have lots of questions. What, was Cyndi
Lauper booked elsewhere? Where’s William Hung when you need
him? Will Lucia Lin be taking the Paula Abdul role? We just don’t
know. What we can tell you is that round one of Popsearch takes
place today and tomorrow beginning at 10 a.m. at Symphony Hall,
301 Massachusetts Avenue in Boston, and that this weekend’s
winners will be whittled down to nine semifinalists on June 9 at
Copley Square Plaza. Those will sing at Pops concerts on June 15,
19, and 24, and the three survivors will duke it out once and for all
with the Pops on June 29. Applications and disclaimers are
available at www.bostonpops.org

FIRST THURSDAY ARTS with 8 art openings in local businesses

with Jamaica Plain artists is from 6 to 8 p.m. on Centre and South
Sts., Jamaica Plain. Free; (617) 864-2712.

AT THE MOVIES

What with Michael Jackson, Kobe Bryant, and the Iraq prisoner
scandal dominating the news, it’s no surprise that the ongoing civil
war in Sudan, which has claimed some two million lives, has gotten
little attention. Megan Mylan & John Shenk’s documentary Lost
Boys of Sudan follows the fortunes of two survivors of that conflict
who seek refuge in the United States. Its month-long stay at the
Museum of Fine Arts continues with tonight’s 6 p.m. screening,
followed by a panel discussion. The MFA is at 465 Huntington
Avenue in Boston; call (617) 369-3300.

READINGS/LECTURES

MARRIAGE? The Boston Lawyers Chapter of the Federalist

Society presents "Much Ado About Marriage," the fourth annual
installment of its "Shakespeare and the Law" series. A staged
reading of Much Ado About Nothing (which Commonwealth
Shakespeare Company will present on Boston Common this
summer) directed by CSC artistic director Steven Maler will feature
Lieutenant Governor Kerry Healey as Beatrice, State Senator Jarrett
Barrios as Claudio, Commissioner Jennifer C. Braceras of the US
Commission on Civil Rights as Hero, Supreme Judicial Court
Justice Robert Cordy as Don Pedro, and Middlesex District
Attorney Martha Coakley as Dogberry, plus other notables
including attorney and Phoenix contributor Harvey Silverglate. We
couldn’t help noticing Governor Mitt Romney’s absence from this
stellar line-up. Surely he’d be appropriate for the marriage-shy
Benedick. Or for Don Pedro’s bastard brother, Don John, who tries
to prevent the wedding of Claudio and Hero (Hero sounds like a
guy’s name, and anyway, Claudio’s from out of state and they’ve
declared no Sicilian residence intentions). Perhaps the governor will
make a surprise appearance. Following the reading, Commissioner
Braceras will lead a panel discussion that will address the law’s role
in sanctioning and regulating marriage. That’s at 4 p.m. at the
Shubert Theatre, 265 Tremont Street in the Theater District, and it’s
free; call (617) 482-9393.
