The paper aims to prove that historical linguistics, and linguistics in general, show affinities with the exact sciences. To demonstrate this, examples from Ancient Greek and Indo-Iranian poetics have been examined, as approached through tools which are operative in linguistic reconstruction. One of the most important domains is the phonological one.
