1. Activity Description

With this activity, you are expected to achieve the following learning
outcomes:

The student will be able to write about past and future events, give recommendations
and express his/her opinion using “wish” and “hope”, as well as conditionals.

The activity consists of:

Write clearly a text about this topic: “Effects of technology on the environment”,
for that, you must do the following:

- Talk about past events;


- Use “If clauses” to express future meaning;
- Use “Wish” to express hypothetical situations;
- Give advice and recommendations.
- Write a letter to United Nations Secretary-General1;

Dear Student,

You must take into account the following aspects at creating the
letter. It must contain three paragraphs, as follows:

- Introduction: set the effects of technology in


environment, positive or negative.
- Development: explain your reasons to support your
ideas.
- Closing: give some recommendations in order to
sustain the environment by the technology and give
your conclusions.

✓ You will develop this task in the Writing forum by three
stages.
✓ At the end of this task, you will consolidate the three
paragraphs in a final document, that is the letter.
✓ Follow the steps in each stage; post your contributions in the
forum and get feedback from your tutor.
✓ Give and receive opinions about the topic by the comments
your partners do.
✓ The final product must be sent individually.

Stage 1: (First Paragraph of the letter-Introduction) Technology and its


effects on environment (1st week)

- Write a paragraph as an introduction of the letter about how technology has affected
or benefit the ecosystem.

- Text length: 70 words
- Write about your opinions towards how the technology has
impacted, negative or positively, on the environment. Also,
how it has affected to climate Change in the last decades, and
if it has caused or not environmental pollution or natural
resources scarcity.
- Here, there is an example:

- Give opinions to your partners’ paragraphs about this stage.

Stage 2: (Second paragraph of the letter-development) Technology and global


warming (2nd week)

- Write a 200-word-paragraph giving your reasons and arguments about why


technology has impacted the global warming in a positive or negative way. You can
use the following vocabulary for the text:

Stage 3: (Third paragraph of the letter -Closing) Recommendations for


improving the environment and conclusions (3rd week)

- Write your advices in a 200-word-paragraph how we can use the technology to help
the environment in order to improve current environmental crisis. Use the following
vocabulary for the text:

Governments… United Nations (UN)… measures… take actions…


sustainable development… policies… climate policy… eco-friendly
technology… it is necessary… I recommend… I would… etc…

- Give opinions to your partners’ paragraphs about this stage.

Stage 4: (Consolidation of the three paragraphs of the letter) design the letter
(4th week)

- According to the previous stages, you will design your letter in a formal way
addressed to the UN Secretary-Executive (470 words as minimum) including the
following steps:

- Check the agenda out to verify the opening and closing dates of the task

- Check out and study the Online Content (Level B2 from module 1 to module 4).

• The members of the group must participate in the forum by giving and receiving opinions
about the texts designed during the stages, creating a discussion among them. Besides,
they must recommend and give feedback to the partners’ contributions, in order to
enrich the discussion.

• For this work, there is no roles to perform.

by giving opinions about other partners’ paragraphs.

activity guide must be checked.
