AMAZINGLY ENOUGH, SHE’S ALSO HUMAN (A HIGHLY EVOLVED ONE). SHE SPEAKS TO HER FRIEND TAVI GEVINSON ABOUT LOVE, SONGWRITING, AND THE BATTLES THAT COME WITH BEING BOTH SUPERNOVA AND CEO PHOTOGRAPHED BY MICHAEL THOMPSON STYLED BY BARBARA BAUMEL. Since the age of 14, T have littered—excuse me, adomed—the Internet with Taylor Swift analyses. I was first struck by how much more agency she had over her songwriting and public image than other popular artists tapping into my demo, and by how it felt to get permission from a girl wielding a guitar to shamelessly express one’s emotions, despite how often doing so can get you called “crazy” (that sexist euphemism for “fem rine”), With the release of her fourth album, Red, in 2012 and ‘a handful of highly publicized romances, Taylor was criticized by the press and other entertainers for such sinful acts as dat ing people and writing songs about it, gaining a reputation as boyerazy and loveridden, But Te always felt that the men in her songs were mere catalysts for her own self discovery. Last ‘October she released 1989, and if you use the Internet or ever leave the house, you're familiar with its ubiquity. But T would like to draw attention to the secret message spelled out in the liner notes of “Clean,” the final track: “She lost him but she found herself and somehow that was everything.” “Taylor's first four albums have been certified platinum a ‘combined 21 times, but despite her unprecedented success in ‘country music, 1989%s strictly pop, The same woman who once landed a nonsingle called “Forever and Always" on the Top 40 charts now declares, in “Wildest Dreams,” “Nothing lasts for ever.” Yet her storytelling and the attention to detail that she honed in country are what make her pop songs peerless. She's 25 now, and with her newfound perspective on romances expi ration date, she’s also gained appreciation for the joy ofa fling’s impermanence, recovering from heartbreak, and reinventing ‘oneself, “Find out what you want/ Be that girl for a month” re fers to the preferences of a lover in “Blank Space” but could just as well apply to her own evolution, 7989 debuted at number ‘one on the Billosard 200 charts and sold almost 1.3 million cop: {es in the fist week. It was the top selling album of 2014 and ‘outsold her previous two albums in the U.S. alter just 19 weeks in release Taylor and I frst met in 2012, but you can't go over to a fiiend's apartment to make chil and be like, “But first, real ‘quick: Jit ‘Starbucks lovers'?” However, in the name of journal ism, [talked to Taylor the morning of this year’s Grammys at her house in L.A. about all ofthe above, ‘avi Gevinsow: Lena Dunham once said that she didn fee like showing her body on TV is brave because bravery is doing something you're afraid of, and its not scary for her: Is it easy for you to share so much in your work? Or is ita fear that you had to get aver? TAYLOR Swit It definitely doesnt feel scary to me to write songs about my personal life. It actually feels like the only way I've ‘ever processed emotions. Like, a lot of people have a diary ‘where they write whatever they want, and that helps them get it ‘out without screaming at somebody. I havea big priority placed ‘on not being the type of person who takes out my problems on people around me. I also know that even though the media's ‘going to assign characters to each of these songs, I'l never con: firm who these songs are about. That's the one bit of protective armor that [ have: That's my secret know what happened, Tim going to tell my version of events in my albums, and that's the real account of what happened. Ic: What is scary to you? 1s: Oh my God, wel, lots of things. One thing Tve gotten alittle better at is the idea that I could do one thing wrong and all of is would completely disappear. Like all of my work from my centre life, every album I've put out in the last 10 years, all of HLL 192 st would be wiped from the record and no one would appreck ate what Ive dane that’s good. Because if you watch celebrity culture, it happens, you know? Someone says something crazy Jinan interview orf caught stumbling out of « lub drunk too many times when they're thought to be America’s sweetheart. People can feel betrayed very easily by celebrities. And one thing that sed to relly scare me a lots making my fans fel like they dont know me. So Ihave tobe easier on myself about this. Because the reason I don't stumble out of clubs drunk is Dpecause I don't rally fee! lke doing that, like, on a Wednesday night, ou know? And the eason why T don't say crazy inflam- matory thing in interviews is because I dont have that many inflammatory thoughts. Of course, when T sit down with my {tiends, lke when you and T have hinch and stl tll you all the people who bother me or are hornible to me or are giving re crazy side-eye ata party. But I'm not going o say that in an interview: So Ijust have to trust this isnt going to just disappear: But it’ scary to me that Ican somehow get bad pres for some- thing I didnt do, or my label changes a policy and T get blamed for itor there's a new music [legislative bill that would affect ry belies and all ofa sudden Tim in a headline—you know, there's some copyright thing happening with a Tshirt and I'm {nthe headline. Its interesting how many diferent ways they can pull your name into things that you had nothing directly todowith 16: Tinterviewed Emma Watson a couple of years ago. She said, “People praise me for being some kind of role model because I don’t stumble out of cubs drunk, but [honestly just don’ fel Tike i” 1s: Here’ the thing: Every git, every woman, has diferent pri ites, different things that make them fel powerful oF strong, 3 special, or unique. I's justso strange to Uhnk tha we ‘would all have the same triggers, the same priorities, and that ‘we all have the same definitions of fun. 16: And the same weaknesses think that when people who've Jha success from a young age go through a trainwreck cycle, {cs usually because they'e working on someone elses terms, so they fel the need to rebel, But when its something you've Dui, you don’t have that same kind of resentment or angst ness. But its also dificult to keep those standards for yoursell Do you ever really worry that youre going to accidentally say something inflammatory? 1s: Not necessarily. As far asthe need to rebel against the idea of you, othe image of you: Like, I feel no need to burn down the house I built by hand. I can make additions to it. Tan re decorate. But I buik this. And so I'm not going to st there and say, “Oh, T wish [hadn't had corkscrew-culy hair and worn cowboy boots and sundresses to awards shows when T was 1% wish I hadn't gone through that fairy-tale phase where I just wanted to wear princess dresses to awards shows every single time.” Because Tmade those choices. T did that. I was part of ime growing up. It wasnt some committee going, “You know ‘what Taylor needs to be this year?" And so with 1989, T feel like we gave the entire metaphorical house [built a complete renovation and it made me love the house even more—but still keeping the foundation of what I've always been. 1 Tean make myself crazy looking at things from when Twas younger. How do you give yourself permission to change? Ts: You just have to have faith in the fact that everything i a process. Tm really happy with today, the end result of what my Iie looks like. I love my friends. [love my fans love what 1 know I stand for. Tlove my lyries. Tm proud of what I've done Tm proud of this album more so than anything Te ever done ELLE 194 before. So Hook back and think about, like, lets take my album Red: That was sort of patchwork quilt of me still loving coun: try music but finding this new love for pop musi, and trying to ‘make that work on one album. sit a sonically cohesive alburn? 'No, Was it necessary to take me from my first three albums to ‘where Iam now with 1989? Yes. God, I was telling my mom this yesterday when I was putting together a package for this British fan—I was writing her notes and stuff, my mom was helping me ‘wrap presents—and she goes, “Remember last year?” Last year Fdwas nominated fr Album ofthe Year You go into Grastny ‘week thinking, Imm not going to win and I'm fine with that and T ‘have enough happiness and success. And if I don't win, I won't bbe sad. And then everybody comes up to you at these functions and they go, “You knaw you're going to win Album ofthe Year; ‘you know youre going to win Album of the Year; I voted for ‘you for Album of the Year, you're going to win; you're going towin.” And so then you start getting hopeful, So we go to the awards and they're announcing the winner for Album of the ‘Year—last award of the night-and the presenter says, “Album of the Year: RRRRRandom Access Memories, Daft Punk!” And for the frst millisecond T thought they were saying Red. And, you ‘know, you clap because you support other people and all that. ‘And then I didn't want to go to after parties. Ijust wanted to lay ina blanket and eat an In-N-Out burger on my couch. [found ‘myself wanting something that anybody would want, and Twas really bummed. My backup singers texted me and said, “Hey, are you okay?” Twrote, ‘Tm okay, but Td love some company,” ‘So they come over, and I was like, “Hey, do you want to hear ‘something I wrote this week?” And I played them the demo of “Welcome to New York” And they look at me and go, “This is ‘an '80s throwback song_you're using all '30s sounds on this.” ‘And I was like, “Wow, I didn't really think about that, but Pd ‘been doing that on every song I've made for this record so fa." 1 go to sleep, and I wake up in the middle ofthe night at three in tthe morning and st up straight, ike out ofa movie, and just go, “1989.1 called 1989" That moment wouldn't have happened if Thad won Album of the Yeat: So many things would be dif. ferent if Thadn't experienced failure-the way Tlive my life and ‘my resilience—and iT hadn't been harshly criticized every step ‘of the way. So thas what gives me faith that even ifyou made a mistake in the past, or you didn't do something quite as well as ‘you wanted to, these are things we learn from—it's not useless. ‘ic: Twas talking with a friend the other day about writing, be ‘cause I've journaled or written publicly every day since I was very young. And I said, “I think I have to stop because it’s dis tancing me from the world.” My friend was like, *No,no. Its the thing that connects you to the world! How do you feel like the habit of songwriting affects the way that you experience life and ‘move through the world? 1s: The joke that people always make to me when they don't know what to say~like, some IG year-old comes up to me and asks me for a picture and her dad’, like, standing with her be ‘cause they're at the mall—is: “You're gonna write a song about this, arent ya” 16: Ohno... 1s Literally, I've had people say “You're gonna write a song about this, aren't you?” every day for the last 10 years of my life. But I don't write songs about things that happen to me in ‘my daily life that don’t deeply affect me emotionally. You know hhow you have those phases where you think about an ex that happened years ago, and all of sudden you're thinking about itagain—dhat ean happen to me and Tl write a song about that It's not like I have to be talking to a dude to write songs, or HLLE 196 bbeen broken up with or have broken up with a guy. The miscon- ception that's so strange about female songwriters is that you would ever use yous life strategically. [know what my fans like {na song at this point. They like a really hooky, juicy chorus but without stupid stuff. They don't want unnecessary “oooodhs,” stupid, pointless singalongs. They see right through that They're smarter than that. They really like zingers, lines like “Darling, Im a nightmare dressed like a daydream” They like You call me up again just to break me ike a promise/So cast ally cruel in the name of being honest.” Alot ofthe time, TM get an idea that is one of those lines and T'l just save i ill my life ‘its with whatever metaphor I came up with, 16: Teel like a lot of 1989 really validates the kinds of romance that are not a relationship but are, like, a fling or: 1s: A complicated situation, Someone who floats in and out of | your life but never really stays therefor along period of time. ‘c:T want to ask you about “Clean.” The girl singing is so senst- ble, with none of the impulsiveness of “Blank Space” or “Style” 15 “Shake It Off” and “Clean” were the last two things we wrote for the record, s0 it shows you where I ended up men- tally. “Clean” I wrote as Twas walking out of Liberty in London. Someone I used to date~it hit me that Td been inthe same city ‘as him for two weeks and [ hadn't thought about it. When it did hit me, it was like, Oh, T hope he's doing well. And noth ing else. And you know how itis when you're going through heartbreak. A heartbroken person is unlike any other person. Their time moves at a completely different pace than outs. Is this mental, physical, emotional ache and feeling so conflicted. Nothing distracts you from it. Then time passes, and the more you live your life and create new habits, you get used to mot having a text message every morning saying, "Hello, beautiful Good morning” You get used to not calling someone at night totell them how your day was, You replace these old habits with new habits, like texting your friends in a group chat all day and planning lun dinner parties and going out on adventures with your girlfriends, and then all of a sudden one day you're in London and you realize you've been in the same place as your ex for two weeks and you'e fine. And you hope he’ fine. The first thought that came to my mind was, Tm finally clean, Pd been in this media hailstorm of people having a very miscon- strued perception of who I was. There were really insensitive jokes being made at awards shows by hosts; there were snarky headlines in the press—“Taylor Goes Through a Breakup: Wel, That Was Swift!”focusing on all the wrong things. 16: Thats the headline for this, by the way: 18: Oh good! Please put it on the cover. And so when I thought, think T'm finally clean, I fel like Td broken free of the ad. dictive quality of sadness and heartbreak. But I also feel like the world is starting to focus on things other than obsessing ‘over my romantic life, because I honestly didn't go on a date for years. Tjust don't do it anymore, because Tm not willing to provide aniusement. I feels like you're going on a date in the ‘middle of some weird gladiator arena, everybody is watching, and the media is there with their thumbs up or thumbs down as towhether they approve, So “Clean” was a resolution ina sense, and 1989 emotionally is the most mature of my records. This album is not clear-cut about who was wrong, who was right. When you grow up and you experience diflerent kinds of re- lationships or love, you realize i's not always black and white Sometimes you have no idea how you feel about something, and i's okay to write about that, too. 1c: We know that love is addictive, but for you to say that heart break is addictive rings so true eel like alot of your work dows Pere Em iris a4 Penreree a nd Suey ere me a Psu ees eee es Cee en Perey nen eee Ty See Perr eco
