Sudden taste af freedom & expovure tothe adversities of urban lifestyle make youngstors the easy victims of addictions and irresponsible sxtal behaviour. In this context and in the new emerging world of the 2ist century i is a phenomenon that young people appreciate and are influenced in postive waysby a peeled Intervention if its well-designed and properly supervised hence serving as a peer educator provides a challenging, rewarding opportunity to young people to develop their leadership ‘kil, gain the respect of ther peers, and improve their own knowledge base and skills Objectives: ‘To reach out to youth through their own pasts, ‘Toempower youth to make healthy choices in lifestyles relationships and safety ‘Tocnable the students, balance academic snd socal pressures ‘To enable the students develop healthy self-esteem, thus helping them realize their sgealsin ie, + Toompower them build nurturing relationships that eads to fulfiling lives. Peer education as a programme involves students of the second year under graduate programme who ao invited to join the programme, They are required to register their names by filling in an applcaicn form which inctades a brief writeup on their purpose of joining the course. The shortistal candidates are called for an interview to assess their motivation, leadership qualities, & commitment. The selected students tindergo 35 hours of formal ‘waining sessions on tops like Life skils, Reproductive health and Personal Safety, Theie curticalam broly covers SeleAwareness| Sel Estee, (Goal Setting: Deciéon Making Body Image Relationships Safety in intimate relationships Personal safety Child sexual abuse Values de intligercoe Addictions &subsance abuse Evolution of human body Why twa sexes? (Changes in puberty - emotional physical Pregnancy Sexcal Orientation Sexual identity, Gender Bias ‘The methodology includes lectures role plays. group discussion, intoractive sessions. group projects fil trips and mantoring sessions. Asa next step the ained peor educators deliver formal and informal ssssions in their own classes on the topics like relationships, reproductive health, substance abuse, personal safety et ‘The uniqueness of this programme indicates that the peer educators themselves are empowered to handle thir lives beter and make appropriate choices and decisions for themselves It helps ther increase thet knowledge level and have a cleat understanding on the topics covered, Furtaer it enhances thei interpersonal relationships, communication ‘kil an most llth confidence to interact with cross-section of people.
