TOPIC
APPLICATIONS OF HORMONES AS DRUGS 20
EXAMPLES AT LEAST
HORMONES:
DEFINATION:
“Hormone, organic substance secreted by plants
and animals that functions in the regulation of physiological activities
and in maintaining homeostasis.”
 A chemical substance produced in the body that controls and
regulates the activity of certain cells or organs.
 It is a chemical substance which is produced in one part of the
body, enters the circulation and is carried to distant target organs
and tissue to modify their structure and functions.

APPLICATIONS OF HORMONES:
1). Corticosteroid (steroid) hormones:
They are used to treat cancers
such as lymphoma, leukemia and multiple myeloma.
 They are often combined with chemotherapy drugs to increase
their effectiveness. Prednisone, dexamethasone (Decadron,
Dexasone), hydrocortisone and methyl prednisone (Medrol) are
types of corticosteroid drugs.

2). Thyroid hormones:

Thyroid hormones stop the growth of thyroid
tumors after surgery or radiation therapy for thyroid cancer.
 They are also used to replace thyroid hormones in the body when
the thyroid gland is removed. Levothyroxine (Synthroid, Eltroxin)
is a thyroid hormone drug.

3). Somatostatin analogues:

are drugs that lower the number of
hormones made and released by neuroendocrine tumors (NETs).
 They are mainly used to control symptoms of carcinoid syndrome.
Octreotide (Sand statin, Sand statin LAR) is a somatostatin
analogue.

4). Sex (reproductive) hormones:

are used to treat cancers that need male or
female hormones to grow

5). Androgen:
is a male hormone and is used to treat breast cancer.
Fluoxymesterone (Halotestin) is an androgen drug.

6). Estrogen:
is a female hormone and may be used to treat
metastatic prostate cancer and metastatic breast cancer.
Diethylstilbestrol (DES) is an estrogen drug.

7). Progestin:
is a female hormone. It is used to treat breast cancer and
sometimes uterine (endometrial) cancer and prostate cancer.
Medroxyprogesterone (Provera) and megestrol (Megace) are types of
progestin drugs.

8). Anti Androgens:

are used to treat prostate cancer. Bicalutamide
(Casodex), flutamide (Euflex) and nilutamide (Anandron) are
types of anti-androgen drugs.

9). Anti Estrogen:

include estrogen blockers and selective estrogen
receptor modulators (SERMs). They are used to treat breast cancer,
uterine cancer and ovarian cancer. Fulvestrant (Faslodex) and
tamoxifen (Nolvadex, Tamofen) are types of anti-estrogen drugs.

10). Aromatase Inhibitor:

are used to treat breast cancer and ovarian
cancer in woman who have gone through menopause. Anastrozole
(Arimidex), exemestane (Aromasin) and letrozole (Femara) are types of
aromatase inhibitor drugs.

11). Luteinizing hormone–releasing hormone (LHRH)

agonists:
are also called gonadotropin-releasing hormone (GnRH)
analogues. They are used to treat prostate cancer and breast cancer.
Buserelin (Suprefact), goserelin (Zoladex) and leuprolide (Lupron,
Lupron Depot, Eligard) are types of LHRH agonist drugs.

12).Gonadotropin-releasing hormone (GnRH)

antagonists:
are used to treat prostate cancer. Degare used to treat
prostate cancer. Degarelix (Firmagon) is a GnRH antagonist, arelix (Firm
agon) is a GnRH antagonist.

13).Liothyronine:
A thyroid hormone replacement therapy used to treat
hypothyroidism, to suppress TSH, and to help in the diagnosis of
hyperthyroidism.

14). Levothyroxine:
A synthetic T4 hormone used to treat
hypothyroidism that can be used along with surgery and radioiodine
therapy to manage thyrotropin-dependent well-differentiated thyroid
cancer.

15). Disoximetasone:
A glucocorticoid used to treat inflammatory and
pruritic corticosteroid-responsive dermatoses.

16). Oxandrolone:
An androgenic hormone used to treat muscle loss
from prolonged corticosteroid treatment and to treat bone pain
associated with osteoporosis.

17). Estradiol:
An estrogenic steroid used to treat vasomotor
symptoms of vulvar and vaginal atrophy in menopause,
hypoestrogenism, prevention of postmenopausal osteoporosis,
treatment of breast cancer, and advanced androgen-dependent
carcinoma of the prostate.

18). Cortisone acetate:

A steroid hormone used for the relief of the
inflammatory and pruritic manifestations of corticosteroid-
responsive dermatoses and endocrine disorders associated with
inadequate production of steroid hormones.

19). Somatostatin:
A naturally-occurring peptide hormone used for the
symptomatic treatment of acute bleeding from esophageal varices.

20). Secretin Porcine:

A secretin hormone used to stimulate pancreatic or
gastric secretions to diagnose exocrine pancreas dysfunction,
gastronome, and abnormalities in the bile and pancreatic ducts.

21). Thyroid Hormone:

Thyroid drugs (thyroid hormones) are used to
supplement low thyroid levels in people with hypothyroidism.
