Question 6
Identify and discuss why employees join unions. What do you believe are the major pros and
cons of unions today? If you had a choice, would you recommend union formation within your
organization? Why or why not?
Unions have been formed by workers that share responsibilities or are positioned within
similar industries. Carrell & Heavrin state that the original American unions are formed by
skilled craft workers (2013). As each industry changes or requires specific needs to fulfill their
goals, the needs from a union can also differ. There are several types of unions depending on the
type of labor required for each industry. The three main types of unions are craft unions,
industrial unions, and transportation unions. Each type can vastly differ from another, which
allows the individual needs of the unions to be better met.
The first type of union is considered craft unions. These groups are formed by others that
gain membership and organization from those within their specific industry or shared craft.
When those within an industry band together to discuss and resolve commonly shared concerns
or issues that pertain specifically to their crafts, they are provided with an arsenal of sorts. Craft
unions could be used within a variety of crafts or skills, such as bricklayers, electricians, or
carpenters. An industrial union an example of the second type of union. A major difference
between craft and industrial unions is the skill level of the employee. Industrial unions are
composed of workers that are considered either semiskilled or unskilled.
