Wildlife killed by cities

Since the industrial revolution people have expanded cities, took down acres and acres of forest,
drained rivers, swamps, destroyed the habitats of thousands if not more species of animals, all to
sustain the growing population. In my town, this has become increasingly obvious of late.

First and foremost, in order to obtain the space for our cities, we destroy forests, drain lakes and rivers,
only to create building areas. As for my town, we had to deforest the entire area and even drain a small
river in order to be able to make our city bigger to fit the needs of so many people. This caused many
animals to die. Even more needed to flee in order to survive.

Another way urban development is affecting the wildlife is by throwing all of its debris into the natural
habitat of animals, albeit forests, lakes, rivers, swaps. My town runs along the Danube bank and we
throw so many different kinds of trash in it that we have almost suffocated all of its depending upon
fauna.
Throwing the trash is not even the biggest problem, seeing as we have motor boats passing on the river
almost hourly. That type of noise pollution, added to the oil spills or debris thrown from the boats, ruin
the river.

While it has become increasingly obvious that this not only harms the environment but it will harm us as
well in the long run, our authorities are unable to do more to stop this. Of course, there are fees and
doing time, but people get sneakier and our authorities are underfunded hence they don’t have enough
manpower to cover every single part of the town.
