different stories say something.

1. She tiptoes into the old, dark house. ‘Hello? Is anyone here?’ she whispered nervously.

2 Now complete these sentences with a suitable adjective to describe how the characters from
different stories feel.

1. Nick was astonished. ‘I can’t believe it!’ he said.

2. Amy’s hands shook with fear as she picked up the phone. She was terrified.
3. ‘Thank goodness I’ve found it at last,’ said Jan. ‘I’m so relieved’
4. He had been so determined to get to the top of the mountain, but now he was too
exhausted to go any further.
5. She felt desperate. ‘There must be something I can do to help,’ she thought.

3 Read this writing task and discuss the questions below it in class.

Anne knocked on the door of the house; she was determined to find out who lived there. The door
opened. She knew it that this is the right place. After being separated for 20 years, she finally got to
meet with her. Anne’s suddenly cried. She felt very happy when an old woman opened up the door.
The old woman is her mother, who she has been searching for this whole time. She decided to make
a surprise for her mother since it is their first time meeting after years being separated. Anne
hugged the old woman tightly and cried happily. At that moment she was pushed by the old woman.
Anne became confused for a while. Later, she asked the woman why she pushed her. The woman
said, ‘I’m sorry girl, but you got the wrong house. Your mom’s house is the other one. Not this.’
Anne’s face started to get all red. She flustered and went to the next house. She felt very shame on
herself. After all of the things that happened, she cannot calm down anymore. When she knocked on
the door of the next house. An old woman, around her fifty’s opened up the door. The woman
shocked and covered her mouth. She said ‘How come..’ Anne hugged the old woman nicely and this
time she confident that the old woman is her mother.
