4 Culture

3.7.7 Determine personal contributions to working with culturally diverse communities and

learners by reflecting on one's own personal culture.

In schools, classrooms are becoming more diverse. Understanding a students culture is

vital for building relationships in your classroom. Thinking about your own culture sometimes

slips one's mind and you don't think about it daily but the same goes for your students, your

culture can be expressed in your daily activities. Everyone should understand their own cultural

background, this is the same for your classroom, students should be aware of how to respect one

another no matter their race, religion, gender and anything else that may be “different” from

others.

Everyone's culture is unique in their own way. Growing up, religion has been a big part

of my culture and how I go through my daily life.In the United States there are many different

cultures and come with different beliefs. Everyone celebrates different holidays/different things.

My culture is similar to a lot of others that are in my district. My friends, co-workers, my

teammates, have similar things in common like holidays, what we eat, what we wear. The

students that I go to school with share the same holidays that I celebrate.(Evidence 2.4.1). How

my family and I celebrate our culture is we celebrate Birthdays, Christmas, Easter,Thanksgiving,

New Years, 4th Of July. My family's religion is Christian and my sister, my mom, and I go to

church every sunday.

All teachers can have different ways of teaching and how they view learning styles. There

are different ways to get to know your students' culture and how they learn. There are some

examples that students will be doing at the beginning of the year to get to know each other, such

as an all about me paper or presentation you can also provide a questionnaire,(Evidence 2.4.2)
to have a better understanding of each student. Another example I can do as a teacher is

reading a book about different holidays, and having books available that describes multiple

cultures.

One of the important aspects of being a teacher is knowing how to build relationships

with your students based on their culture. Being able to understand how one views the world will

help me know how to view education and my students. I was diagnosed with dyslexia in 3rd

grade, this means I learn differently from others. This will affect my teaching style because every

child learns differently, I can help the students better understand content that may seem easier to

others, and overall understand where they are coming from. I also may have an unconscious bias

based on where I grew up and how I was raised.

In summary a teachers culture is just as important as a students culture. It is important to

know how you think as an educator and how your students think. We need to know where the

other person is coming from. There might be a reason why a student is resisting a homework

assignment or did not complete something due to a religious reason. Culture is significant to all

of us. It includes our religion, language, customs, and other norms that shape who we are as

people.
