 Thatcher became Prime Minister in 1979, at the
time the country was facing rampant inflation and
high unemployment rates.
 She increased taxes and was responsible for the
economy falling deeper into a recession.
 Unemployment was around 2.7 million people.
 Many protested in the streets.
 Throughout Margret Thatcher’s leadership she did
managed to lower inflation but not until the end and
at the cost of millions of peoples jobs.
She was the longest-serving British prime
minister of the 20th century and the first
woman to hold that office. A Soviet journalist
dubbed her the "Iron Lady", a nickname that
became associated with her
uncompromising politics and leadership
style.
